Page 6 Heppner, Ore., Gazette-Times, Thursday, March 21, 1974 Mq A crown With three seconds left in the championship game Satur day night in Pendleton, Santi am's David Plotts swished a 21 -footer to pull ahead of Oakland and take the state class A title back to Santiam for the first time in the school's history, gave Santiam one of the tournaments lowest scoring victories, 38-36. Santiam led at the half 22-18 but the scrappy Oakland team kept things lively and almost forced an overtime period. Plotts and Davidson led the Wolverines with 10 points each while Peebles was high scorer for Oakland with 18 points. Bonanza conquered Con cordia Lutheran of Portland to snare third place in the tourney as they pulled down a 68-62 victory. Both teams had been originally rated 1-2 in the - state but early losses on Friday found them to be , scrapping for the consolation 4 prize. Columbia Basin Conference .representative Weston-Mc Ewen hustled their way past a hot shooting team from Wald port, 64-46. The Tigers and Scots rode in a 33-21 halftime score to claim their fourth high finish in the last four years. VHlanueva for Weston-Mc-Ewen led in his team's effort with 17 points, followed by Ross Meinhart with 10. Lead ing the Irish was Steve Small wood with 14. For Villanueva, the game ended his tournament career, finding him once again on top with the honors. Tony tied for top placement in tournament scoring with 67 points and finished second in rebounding with 44. Villanueva also made the first team of the Class A All-Stars while teammate Tim Meinhart. made the second team. HHS students raise $303 for stricken girl The student council at Heppner High School worked fast in obtaining $303 for the Michael Boylan fund as it began collecting donations last Monday and concluded the event Thursday. Despite various charitable funds that have poured into Pendleton for the little girl with her disease of the bone marrow, her recent graft from 'an older sister failed to take and she will be undergoing another graft from another sister in the near future. Spring sports begin "Spring has sprung," ac cording to some of the elevating atheletes at Hepp ner High School who are going out for track this year. Practice has already begun for tracksters. And the buse ball squad has begun to stretch winter-weary pitching arms. Some atheletes are going to be competing in both sports, making a full training sched ule. The golf teams for both boys and girls is reportedly receiving many participants, all of whom will be practicing at the Willow Creek Country Club. This is the first year the girls have competed in golf. At lone High School spring, sportsters have started tennis as part of the usual spring sports. These three students at Riverside High School had nothing better to do during a 7th period last week so they got permission to clean up the school grounds. From the left, they are David Hug. Area job openings Powers fells Echo for class B flag Oregon's first class B Bas ; ketball Tournament produced a champion not new to the state title ranks, as the Powers Cruisers felled the Echo Cougars 60-50 in the championship game Saturday night. The class B leagues were set up for schools having under 75 students, making competition fairer for the smaller schools. Powers is the exception to the unfair competition exhibited in the past as the Cruisers had won three class A champion ships playing with the larger schools. Local class B teams include lone and Echo, with Echo winning the local Big Sky Conference to enter the state contest held in Baker. Echo made the finals by defeating Boyer an All Star John Boyer, Heppner High's .leading basketball scorer, has been named on the first team of the Columbia Basin Con ference All-Star team. Boyer finished the season with a 22.3 point per game average which was topped only by Weston-McEwen's Tony Villanueva who aver aged 25.3 points a game. Also chosen for the first team were Jerry Paulson of Wasco County, John Adams of Weston-McEwen and Dave Eaton of Condon. All are graduating seniors except for Adams. Jerry Zielinski, the sopho more wizard of the Riverside Pirates, was chosen for the second team of the All-Stars. Zielinski pumped in 20.7 points per game to lead his team this season. Also on the second team are Allan Stephens of Umatilla. Hershel Lantis of Condon. Dick Armstrong of Umatilla and Randy Mc Corkle of Wasco County. All but Zielinski were graduating seniors. Those receiving honorable mention include Ross Mine hart, Weston-McEwen; Craig Krosting. Pilot Rock; Jim Bird, Sherman County; Le land Anderson, Wasco Coun ty; Steve Murray, Pilot Rock; Greg Shearer, Condon; Jon Richelderfer. Sherman Coun ty; and Dennis Barnett, Was co County. The big Saturday night clash found both teams to be nearly matched through the game with Echo pulling up to trail by only 4 with 2:42 left in the game. But the Cruisers pulled it out by finally leading 60-50 at the whistle. Three Echo players were awarded berths on the All Tournament team, Mark Bowman. Jeff Spike and Joe Correa. In the final game Bowman had 17 points fol lowed by Spike with 14, Correa with 9, Reese with 6 and Ottoman with 3. The Cruisers were led by Warrick with 18 and Nendon and Walker netted 12 each. The consolation game found Alsea crushing Imbler 56-36. Tournament officials reported that the $4,000 expenses for the tourney were easily met, assuring next year's tournament.
