lone George Griffith, Cecil cattle rancher, fell from the top of a haystack, struck the side of the truck bed, and sustained a fractured hip Wednesday morning, Jan. 2. Me was alone at the ranch 8 miles north of lone at the time of the accident. Mrs Griffith had left earlier to take her daughter, Char lotte, and mother, Mrs. Fran ces Griffith, to their home in Portland. Griffith was dazed by the injury but was aware he hud to reach the house because the temperature was well below freezing. It took him 40 minutes, crawling and dragging himself, to reach the safety of the house, about 50 yards away. Opening the door and reach ing the telephone presented further obstacles, but he managed to place a call to Charlie O'Connor in lone who responded to his call for help. An ambulance was summoned from Heppner to take Griffith to The Dalles General Hos pital. (le was placed in traction. His wife reports that early indications are that he will probably be immobilized for six weeks or more. Mr and Mrs. Clyde Craw ford and children, Harry, Tom, and Lori, of Eugene visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs Art Dalzell, during the holidays. They also visited Clyde's uncle, Wate Crawford. Ron Lindner, Hermiston, visited his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Lindner, recently. Ron just completed four years in the Navy. He now plans to attend Blue Mountain Community College. Mr. and Mrs. Milo McMil lan. Salem, were in lone visiting wi Mr. and Mrs. Adon Hamlett and Mr. and Mrs. Gar Swanson. Charles Nelson. Bristow's Market B & C Repair Chuck reports he has joined a ski club at his base and has visited some of the nearby ski areas. He is also teaching a first aid class to some high school students at his base. Before Christmas, he sang in the chorus when it presented "The Messiah." John Edmundson, lone Schools principal, announces that due to the improved supply of electrical power, it is now possible to resume com munity use of the gym one night a week beginning Jan. 16. The gym will be open as follows: 7-8, families; 8-9, secondary students and a dults; 9 10, town team basket ball. Everyone using (tie gym is asked to wear gym shoes with clean soles to protect the newly finished gym floor. Pastor Bill Arthur of the United Church of Christ will lead a study and discussion group Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. in the church basement. The book, "Satan is Alive and Well on Planet Earth," will be used for discussion. Copies may be obtained at Bristow's. Kristin Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Nelson, was recently elected to mem bership in Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. Kris tin plans to graduate from Oregon State University in June. The Junior High travels to Arlington Thursday, The game starts at 2 p.m. The girls team hosts Heppner at lone at 6:30. Friday, at 6:30 p.m. the Junior Varsity and Varsity play Echo at lone. Saturday, lone travels to Echo. An immumization clinic will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the morning in the elementary school audio-visual room. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Ball (Cindi Connor), Pendleton, spent Christmas day visiting Mr. and Mrs. Clair Walter and Mr. and Mrs. Don Ball. Jay is working at the post office in Pendleton. Steve Lindstrom, Norfolk, Va., spent the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom. Steve reported the plane fare has more than doubled since the energy crisis. He works for Hampton Roads Sanitation District in Norfolk. Captain and Mrs. Tom Heimbigner, Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi, were in lone for 10 days visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Heimbigner. Tom re ceived his promotion to Cap tain last July. Duane, Shelley, and Errol Connor, Burns, spent their Christmas vacation with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Walter. They will return Jan. 6. Coach Del LaRue is con ducting his PeeWee basketball program again this year. Boys from grades 1 through 5 are eligible to participate. The sophomore class will sponsor a movie, "Ocean 11," Saturday, Jan. 19, 7:30 p.m., in the cafetorium. The lone Junior High bas ketball team traveled to Arlington, Jan. 3. The B team won 34-12. Scoring for lone were Stefani 16, Krebs 6, Rietmann 4, T. Sherer 4, LaRue 2 and Snider 2. The A team lost 23-42. Leland White led the scoring with 14, followed by Keene 7 and McCabe 2. In an earlier encounter with Arlington, the B team won 24-16 and the A team lost 25-37. Ml IN m lone vs. Arlington Jan. 12 We're behind Former lone dies at The Funeral services were held Dec, 31 at Spencer & Libby Funeral Home, The Dalles, for Victor Gustav Peterson, 75, who died Dec. 27 in The Dalles. He was bom March 25, 1898 near lone. Surviving are his widow, Alice M.; a daughter, Sally Fasulo, Fullerton, Ca.; two sons, John, Chicago, and Allan, Lewiston, Idaho; broth ers Henry, lone, and Richard, Portland; a sister, Esther Dobyns, Eugene; and six grandchildren. Mrs. Jessie Underhill was organist and Charlie May Cliff Aldrich benefit is continuing The drawing for the 8-track tape deck as a benefit for Cliff Aldrich sponsored by lone Post 95 American Legion will be held Jan. 12 at the halftime of the lone-Arlington basket ball game, according to Her man Bletell, commander. Aldrich was severely burned when a storage tank on which he was working, ex ploded. He spent several weeks in Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Tickets for the drawing can still be obtained from any member of the Legion. JAY SUMNER EARNS Ph. D DEGREE Jay Sumner, a graduate of Heppner High School in 1957 and Oregon State University, recently was awarded a Ph. D degree in management from UCLA. Sumner dissertation was titled "Examination of the Usefulness of Probability Lat tice Sampling for Household Surveys." Sumner has been employed for 10 years at Rand Corpor ation in Santa Monica, Ca., where he is presently doing research in public education and in urban planning. Hazel Hamlin, Heppner, is home following knee surgery at Pendleton Community Hos pital, Dec. 24. Mrs. Hamlin fell Dec. 22 and broke her hip. mi An KY Thursday. January 10. 1971 Mitchum on child rearing David Mitchum, psychiatric social worker for Mental Health Services, addressed the Mothers Club on child rearing at the Jan. 7 meeting at the home of Nancy Calvert. Mitchum's talk, dealing mainly with discipline, was stimulating and informative, according to Nancy Brown field, club historian, Interac tion developed between speak er and audience as the mothers related their ex periences. During the business meeting members elected to work with the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home as this year's civic project. Ethelyn Jones was appointed to learn the needs of It's Fantastic!
