Mustangs lose to Mountain, 73-64 Blue Blue Mountain Community College JVs posted a 46 per cent shooting percentage from the field and defeated the Heppner Mustangs 73-64 Thursduy night In a non-conference game at Heppner High School. The JV Wolves handed the Mustangs their first basket ball defeat. In the first quarter, the Wolves jumped to an early 16 9 lead over the Mustangs who had trouble finding the runge for the two points. In the following quarter, the Wolves found themselves in turnover trouble, and the Mustangs "hung in." The Mustangs, sparked by John Kilkenny's rebounding, pulled within 8 points of the Wolves as the half ended, 36 28. It was in the second half that the Mustangs came to life. Perhaps it was the half-time pep talk that revived the Mustangs and enabled them to close the gap and outscored the Wolves 21 to 13 points in the third quarter. With 1.10 left in the third quarter, Kilkenny was fouled on a lay-in and made the three-point play to bring the Mustangs within two points of the visitors, 45-47. The Mustangs gave the Wolves a run for their money as Dave McLeod tied the game with 25 seconds re maining in the quarter. Dean Wilson quickly added two points to the Wolves score, but Heppner's Tom Roberts kept Heppncr's hope for victory alive as he tied he score when he was fouled with two seconds remaining on the clock. In the final period, Mike Borgstrom tied the ball game for the last time as he hit two free throws. The Wolves then took command as the Mus- Irrigon Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Coy of Irrigon are announcing " the engagement of their daughter, Clara Fay of Portland, to Wayne Vannice, whose par ents are Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Vannice of Plains, Mont, Miss Coy attended school in Irrigon and graduated from Riverside High School, Board man. She has been employed by the J.C. Penny Co. in Portland. Mr. Vannice graduated from High School in Plains, Mont., and attended Spokane Community College. He works for the stale highway depart ment. No wedding date has been set. Earl Sanders has retired as school custodian at A.C. Hougton Elementary School in Irrigon after 19 years in this position. Lavelle and Sherry Partlow went to Vancouver, Wn Saturday planning to spend several days with Mrs. Part low's sister, Mrs. Gene Berg, and family. They also visited other relatives in Vancouver and Portland. Mrs. Mae McKinney of Pendleton was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Stephens. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wil son visited relatives in Port land during the holidays. Drawing course offered Fundamentals of drawing, adult education and com munity service course offered through Blue Mountain Com munity College starts Mon day. Jan. 7. in the Heppner Junior High art room. The three-hour sessions, instructed by Tom Shear, will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. every Monday night for 10 weeks. This is an introductory course in drawing intended for beginners as well as exper ienced students. The course will cover figure drawing, still life and landscaping The student will develop skills in observation, selection of sig nificanl elements and the organization of visual ideas in com pusisi ion. tangs shots rimmed the basket and failed to go in. The Mustangs open their conference season with Con don Friday night at Condon. The JV game will begin at 6 : 30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow. On Saturday night, Heppner will host the River side Pirates at the high school. Cove ekes past lone, 43-41 The Cove leopards squeezed past the lone Cardi nals 43-41 last Saturday night in the consolation game of the Wallowa Tournament. It was a different ball game than the previous encounter for the Cardinals. The Cards took command of the game the first quarter by outshooting the Leopards 14-9. Both teams battled to a 10-10 score in the following quarter with lone holding a comfor table five point lead during the first half. lone's hopes for victory was shattered in the third quarter as the Cards couldn't buy a basket and only collected five points ir the quarter on free throws. Cove took advantage and pumped in 20 points. The mighty Cards put on a fourth quarter rally and scored 12 points to the Leopards 4. 4-11 LEADER FOIUM SET IN CORVALL1S Morrow County 4-H leaders arc invited to attend the Oregon 4-H Leaders Forum, Feb. 4-6, in Corvallis. "This forum will provide an excellent opportunity for 4-H leaders to get information from state 4-H staff members, exchange ideas with other 4-H leaders and to visit the OSU campus, 4-H center in Salem, and the Marine Science Center at Newport," said Mike Howell, Morrow County ex tension agent. 4-H leaders can sign up at the extension office. With four seconds remain ing in the game, the Cards had a chance for a victory as thev stepped to the free throw line trailing by 3. The Cards made the first free throw and then deliberately missed the second in order to get the rebound and put it in. Their attempt failed and cove won the game. In rebounding, lone grabbed 33 rebounds to Cove's 27. lone was lead by rebounder Mike Warren with 16. Charlie McElligott led lone scoring 14 points. Kim Gu tierrez followed with 13. In the shooting category both teams shot similiar percentages. Cove led in the field goals with 32 per cent and lone had 31 per cent. In the free line category, the Cards shot only 42 per cent to the victors' 52 per cent. "The cold spell we hit in third quarter killed us," said Coach Del LaRue. "We still need to put the ball up in the air more often." Joseph won the tournament by defeating the Wallowa Cougars 60-32. This weekend the Cardinals open league play when they host the Echo Cougars Jan. 4 at lone. The Cards and Cougars again collide the following night in Echo. Basketball season is under way The Heppner Mustangs, Riverside Pirates, and the lone Cardinals open their 1974 basketball season Friday, Jan. 4 The Mustangs travel to Condon to challenge the Blue Oevils in their opener in the Columbia Basin League. The JVs will stprt at 6:30 p m. with the varsity taking the floor at 8 p.m. TTie follow ing night, Jan. 5, the Riverside Pirates open their season against the Mus tangs at Heppner. Game time is 8 p m. The lone Cardinals and the Echo Cougars begin their season in the Big Sky Con ference when they face each other Jan. 4 at the Cardinal gym. The following night both teams square off against each other at the Cougar gym. HU Page 3 Wallowa beafls Cardinals The Wallowa Cougars, spurred by 43 rebounds to lone Cardinals' 26. handed the Cards 55-47 defeat Friday in the opening night of the Wallowa Tournament The Cards didn't take defeat easily as they posted a better shooting percentage. The Cards shot 39 per cent from the field and 78 per cent from the line while the Cougars could only manage 35 per cent from the field and 68 per cent from the line. Wallowa outscored lone in the first and third quarter to insure the victory. Charlie McElligott led the lone scoring with 10 points followed by Joel Peterson with 8 points. Greg Byerley led the victors by sinking 13 points. "We were beaten from the free throw line and boards," said lone coach Del LaRue.
