The Mustangs came back in the second quarter and pulled off rebounds to stay within a few points of the leaders. They finally tied the Blue Devils with 4.41 seconds remaining in the half. John Boyer sunk the tie basket for the Mustangs. Umatilla lone, 49 The Umatilla Vikings out scored the lone Cardinals in the first half. 30-11, for a 49-36 victory in Friday night's opener of the Echo Holiday Tournament at Umatilla. The Vikings quickly took the lead in the first quarter by sinking 12 points to the Cards 4. The leaders tallied 18 more points in the second quarter to gain a comfortable lead at halftime. The Cards, sparked by a halftime pep talk, rallied 10 points in the third quarter and held the Vikings to only points. The fighting Cards tallied 15 more in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough. Hike Warren and Paul Peterson each scored 14 points for the Cardinals. The Vi- Heppner JVs whip Condon, 62-50 Heighth and good shooting paid off Friday for the Heppner JVs who downed the Condon JVs 62-50 at Condon. Heppner, paced by Dave McLachlan, shot 47 per cent from the field with McLachlan scoring 30 points. Condon shot 26 per cent from the field. The losers had a better free throw percentage than the victors, with Condon shooting 62 per cent and Heppner 33 per .cent. ' Heppner was in the lead from the first quarter. They .outscored their opponents every quarter except the third. Condon rallied at half "time, sinking 19 points to Heppner 's 12. Top rebounder for the Mus tangs was DeWayne McLain with 12 rebounds; Dave Mc Lachlan followed with 11. ' "We played a good defen sive ballgame but we threw the ball away too many limes," said Heppner JV Coach Duane Neiffer. , The next game for the JVs will be Friday night at Wallowa. The battle with the Wallowa JVs begins at 6:30 p.m. CAREER. Heppner, Ore., Gazette-Times, Thurs., Dec. 20, JS7J The Blue Devils began to put on pressure, but failed to pull ahead of the Mustangs by more than one or two points. Barry Munkers sunk a basket with 1.22 seconds left and put the Mustangs out in front 28 26. The Mustangs ended the quarter by leading the Blue Devils 29 27. During the third quarter, neither team lost the fighting spirit as both continued to take the lead from one another. Tom Roberts sparked the Mustangs throughout the quarter by stealing the ball from the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils took a 1 point lead at the end of the third quarter. Condon kept the lead until the last four minutes of the fourth quarter when John bests - 36 kings' leading scorer was Cary Sherrow with 16 points. Sherrow also grabbed 8 re bounds. The victors out rebounded the losers 34 to 24. The Vikings shot 39 per cent from the field and made one out of two free throws. The Cardinals had 29 per cent at the free throw line and made 31 per cent of their field shots. Condon took the lead, but not for inns, as the Mustangs tied it up with 1.28 seconds remaining in the game. Then the tables began to turn as John Myers came off the bench for the Mustangs. Craig Pattee fouled Mike Bergstrom and Bergstrom put Heppner ahead 55-54 with 56 seconds left. Greg Shearer hit a basket for Condon and secured a 1 point lead. With 25 seconds loft, the Heppner Mustangs took the lead with a jump shot from Myers and secured the victory. The win marks the third straight non-conference vic tory for the Mustangs. The Mustangs outrebounded the Blue Devils 43-40 with Montgomery heads up Wranglers The Wranglers held their annual Christmas party at the Morrow County Fairgrounds, Dec. 1. A potluck supper preceded a busines meeting that was highlighted by a visit from Sant Claus. The rest of the evening was spent dancing to the music of the Roberts musicians. New officers elected are: Bob Montgomery, president; Lee Palmer, vice-president; Gwen Healy, financial secre tary; and Merlyn Robinson, recording secretary. Direc tors elected for two-year terms were Jerry Myers and Kite Healy. Bob Van Schoiack will serve on the board for a one-year term. Holdover di rectors are Allen Hughes and Ron Haguewood. The by-laws were amended to change meeting dates from one per month to four major meetings per year. The board will meet first in January, and other meetings will be called when necessary. Bev Steagall was appointed judge on a panel with rodeo board members for the forth coming princess tryouts. Bob Van Schoiack is the Wrangler representative at rodeo board meetings. Lee Palmer received a prize for having the largest number of guests present, and door prizes were won by Scott Dougherty, Barbara Palmer and Merlyn Robinson. Condon Mike Bergstrom and John Kilkenny grabbing 20 and 13 rebounds respectively. Condon out shot the victors by sinking 27 out of 81 shots from the field and 4 out of 12 free throws. Heppner made 11 out of 16 free throws and 24 out of 83 field goals. John Boyer tallied 19 points for Heppner and Kenny Eck man and John Myers scored 13 and 10 respectively. Top scorers from Condon were Greg Shear and Bryce Logan with 12 points each. "We did an outstanding job on defensive with Mike Berg strom and John Kilkenny on the boards," said Heppner Coach Dean Naffziger. "We had an excellent team effort from every Mustang." The Mustangs travel to Annual Christmas bird count today The annual Christmas Bird Count will be held today, Dec. 20. This official count, con ducted by the Heppner High School Biology Department, is done within strict guidelines of the American Audubon So ciety. The count is a 15-mile diameter circle which is divided up into six sections or groups, with six to ten participates in each. Many local people, college students and Heppner High School students make up groups which canvass the area in motor vehicles and on several walks. On Dec. 27, the Mustangs will play the Blue Mountain Community College junior varsity team. The game will begin at 8 p.m. at the Heppner High School gymnasium. Society. On Dec. 13, the Heppner High School Biology Depart ment went to Umatilla Na tional Bird Refuge to study migratory birds and water fowl. The group, ten students and the instructor, Stephen Brownfield, spent the day identifing birds and studying the entire wildlife picture of the refuge. Participants re port an excellent trip with 39 different species of birds seen, an unusually large number. Morrow County Court will not meet Wednesday, Dec. 26, according to Judge Paul Jones. Cardinals Tigers, 41 In a close game the lone Cardinals topped the Stanfield Tiger, 41 40. in the consolation game of the Echo Holiday Tournament Satur day night. The Cards and Tigers battl ed in the first quarter and lone came up on top at the end of the quarter by 1 point. Stanfield rallied in the second quarter to take a 23-20 halftime lead. It didn't take the Cards long to capture the lead as they outscored the Tigers 12-9 in the third quarter and 10-8 in the fourth quarter. Phil Carlson led the lone scoring with 14 points. Charlie McElligott and Mike Warren tallied 10 and 9 points respec tively for the victors. Carlson was the top rebounder for the Cards. lone outrebounded the Tigers 25-19. The Tigers, however, had a better shoot ing percentage than the Cards. The Tigers sunk 16 out of 37 field goals for a 43 per cent, while the Cards made 16 out of 46 field goals. At the free throw line lone sank 9 shots and the Tigers sank 8. "Along with the victory, we placed a man on the all-tournament team," said lone Coach Del LaRue.
