M to hear Harold Damm, Vrician of Foreign Wars state senior vice-commander, tell of the need for increased veteran activity Damm was in Morrow County with other VFW per sonnel to assist local veterans with information of a new VFW Post in Heppner to be known as the Morrow County Post. Veterans from Heppner, lxington. Condon and lone are being welcomed to the new Post. The new post will have a special charter issued only to posts that are started in the 1973-74 year as the VFW is celebrating it's diamond jubi lee ot 75 years of service to the veteran and the community. Gemmell, 74, form er Heppner resident, died in Salem on Nov. 2. Mr. Gemmell was born July 29. 1899 in Morrow County. He graduated from Heppner High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. In 1920 he was married to Harriet Sheldon. He was employed by the First Na tional Bank before going into business with Harold Cohn at Cohn Auto Company. Later he operated the Standard Service Station. AWTAL CHARGE MEET SET FOR NOV. 14 Next Wednesday the annual charge conference of the Heppner United Methodist Church will be held in the church basement at 7:30 p.m. Superintendent Askew Crunibley of the conference's central district will preside. However, those in terested have set a tentative dues structure ol $10 per year. When 25 members are signed 'an election of officers can be held and a dues rate estab lished. Only local members vote in these elections. Simon Winters of Heppner is doing most of the recruiting locally. Persons interested in seeing if they are eligible to join should contact Winters at 989-8415 or 9fN-8221. Six more members are needed to apply for a charter. After a post is formed and a charter issued it can remain open for a period of up to but not more than 90 days to allow additional persons to become charter members. At the close of that period no other names will ever appear on the charter. In 1936. the Gemmells moved to Salem where he was claims accountant for the State of Oregon for 27 years. He retired in 1964. Besides his wife, Harriet of Salem, he is survived by a son, James S. Gemmell. Salem; a daughter, Jean Crawford, Eugene: four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services and in terment were in Heppner Masonic Cemetery, Nov. 5. Tress McClintock, Mon mouth, is visiting his sister, Mrs. Arthur Dalzell, and her husband in lone. Due to the snow, his stay is indefinite. Rhea Creek Grange will meet Friday, Nov. 9, with a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Elections for the coming year will be held. Oct. 30. Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Craw ford and five children visited with his father. Wate Craw ford, and other family mem bers Sunday. Nov, 4. Valhy Lutheran Church held a family potluck dinner Nov. 4. at the church. About 65 attended the affair. A '"sing spiration' followed the din ner. Mrs. Don Peterson led the singing and Mrs. Paul Tews played the organ. A bridal shower was given for Janet Palmateer Nov. 3 in the social room of St. Williams Church. Hostesses were Mrs. Loyd Morgan. Mrs. Don McElligott, Mrs. Bryce Keene, Mrs. Dick McElligott, Mrs. Harold Snider, Mrs. Charles O'Connor. Mrs. Nor man Nelson, and Mrs. Don Peterson. The bride-elect was assisted in opening her gifts by Jean llealy, Bonni Ball, Jodi Hanna and Patti Crawford. Mrs. Bill Healy presided at the punch bowl and Mrs. Helen O'Donnell poured coffee. The Fellow ship Dinner plan ned by the United Church of Christ for Nov. 11 has been cancelled due to conflicting activities. Pastor Bill Arthur reported there is a possibility the Meals for Senior Citizens Program, sponsored by the Neighbor hood Center, might be held once a week in lone if there is enough interest. The United Church of Christ has offered use of its facilities for this purpose. Anyone interested in this program may contact Pastor Arthur for further details. Mr. and Mrs. Randy Tach ella and son, David, and Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Burnett, all of Pendleton, were weekend visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Baker. in,' r An informal discussion group has been formed by Pastor Bill Arthur of the United Church of Christ which will meet monthly to discuss current Christian book The first meeting will be Nov. 15 at 8pm. in the church basement. The book that will be dis cussed is Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey, It is a book on biblical prophecy and current world conditions. There w ill be no school Nov, 12 in observance of Veterans Day. The lone Junior High foot ball team will be treated to a taco feed Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafetorium. Films of a professional football game will be shown. Cardinal Club room mothers are in charge. A Basketball Officials Clinic will be held Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the lone High School gym. It will be conducted by local basketball officials with Jerry Martin in charge. There will be a scrimmage to illustrate the various calls and signals. Coach Del LaRue will give a brief talk on his plans for the Cardinals this year. The public is encouraged to attend. The Cardinal Club will meet Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafetorium. Cassy Chapel will show slides of her trip to the United Nations. The lone Schools Advisory Board met in the library, Nov. 1. Remodeling and repair projects to the building were discussed. Recommendations will be submitted in the 1974-5 budget. Gail Herrmann looked after the Pettyjohn girl. Kim Kell, and Kris. The lone volleyball team played the last game of the season at Riverside, Oct. 31. Each of the three units lost Its match by a score of 0-2. Cindi Martin scored 8 point for A unit. Lori Bergstrom scored 5 for the B unit, and Laurette Piening scored 7 for the C unit . Halloween parties were held in the elementary school Oct. 31 for grades 14. The rooms were decorated with black cats, pumpkins, ghosts, witches, and other things associated with the day. Grades 1-4 had a parade to show their costumes. All grades played games and were served special refresh ments and treats. Cardinal Club room mothers coordi nated the parties. Gene Grabill of Sumpter was a visitor for six day at the home of hi sister and brother-in-law, Mr, and Mrs. Elmer Ellis. He also visited his mother, Mr. Ida Grabill, and other relative, Mr. Evin Osborn, daughter of Mr. and Mr. Clair Walter, returned to her home in Burns Oct. 26 after undergoing emergency urgery in Boise. Mrs. Osborn is reported doing well. Bill Gate was transferred from Pioneer Memorial Hos pital to the Veteran's Hospital in Walla Walla, Oct. 27. American Legion Post 95 will conduct a Veterans Day program on Monday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m., at the flag pole in Memorial Field. Ten lone eniors went to Hermiston Nov. 2 to attend a college visitation program. Those attending were Mary Pat McElligott, Fred Sher man, Phil Carlson, Kay Berg strom. Teena Stefani, Joan McElligott. Melanie Ball, Jan Ekstrom, Mark Rietmann and Cassandra Chapel. They were accompanied by John Ed mundson, principal. Mr. Paul Tewi ecaped Injury Friday morning when her car lid on the Icy pavement and went off the highway. There wa ome damage to the car. The lone United Church of Christ observed Stewardship Sunday, Nov. 4, by having ' members and guests partake of a tew dinner following the worship service. About 50 people participated. Mr. and Mr. Alfred Nelon Jr. were chairman of the event. They were assisted by Mr. David Rietmann and the Board of Trustees. J "
