During his tour of Oregon. Ranjattan has stay ed with host families in Oregon City, Albany and lone. He will proceed to others in Madras, Portland, Corvallis, Rose burg and Eugene. : Mr. and Mrs. Dick McElli gott were the host family for bis stay in lone. : Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Martin attended the wedding of their son, Ralph, and Nona Smith of Modesto. Ca., Oct. 6. frhey were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Martin and later joined by Mr. and Mrs. Al Brazell of Eugene. - The group were guests of Fred's sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mason, Modesto. I On the return trip. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Fred's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Marshall of Forest Grove. ' Mr. and Mrs. Paul Petty john and Rev. and Mrs. William Arthur recently re turned from a 12-day trip to the Hawaiian Islands. Paul attended a week-long conven tion of the Oil Heat Institute held at the Maui Surf Hotel on Maui. At the conclusion of the convention, the group visited gome of the other islands and ended their stay on Oahu. mm ..4. - u.j .' I ' ' Four lone High School graduates are members of the Oregon State University Marching Band. Serving at assistant direc tor it Jim Swanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Swanson, who graduated from !un in 1969. Band members include Sheri Carlson, class of 72, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Carlson: Gregg Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Wilson; and David Warren,, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Warren. Gregg and David are 1973 IHS graduates. Mrs. and Mrs. Garland Swanson announced the arri val of a granddaughter, born Oct. 5, in Auburn. Wn., to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Swanson. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Miller, Salem, were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Swanson. Mr. Miller is Mrs. Swanson s brother. Mrs. Del La Rue is recuper ating at her home from a recent tonsillectomy perform ed at Good Sheperd Hospital in Hermiston. Several college students were home for the weekend to go hunting. Among them were Earl James Pettyjohn. Joe McElligott, Clint Krebs, Peter McElligott and Mike Collins. Connie Emert. former lone resident, is reported making c good recovery from a recent injury sustained in a car accident. She suffered a fractured 6th vertebrae in her back. Mrs. Jerry Ripka and son, Salem, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sherer. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hodgson of Athena were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Jepsen. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Crum of Morton, Wn., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Jepsen. Mr. and Mrs. Gar Swanson and Mr. and Mrs. Philip Miller of Lot Angeles recently re turned from a 10-day trip to Canada. They drove to Banff, Jasper and Kam loops. They left their car at Kelona, B.C., and flew to Vancouver and Victoria. They visited rela tives and went sightseeing. Their return trip was by plane to Kelona and by car to lone. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Roach of Portland were visitors Oct. 7 at the Lewis Halvorsen home. Mrs. Halvorsen was maid of honor when Mr. and Mrs. Roach were married 28 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Harr of Pendleton and Earl Padberg were visitors at Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsens Monday. The combined Eastern Star chapters of Heppner and lone honored past matrons and patrons with a potluck supper Oct. 8 at Heppner. The Magill Ranch at Cecil has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. David Cheney of Portland. The new owners took posses sion Oct. 1. Mr. and Mrs. Cheney will continue to live in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Leo G. LaVoie ( Karen Nelson ) will live on the Cecil Ranch and work for the Cheneys. David Cheney is a retired Air Force jet pilot. He owns his own plane and will travel between his home and ranch by plane. Cheney is a nephew of Roy Philippi of Arlington. Mr. and Mrs. Magill had ranched in the area for 28 years. They are moving to Prineville where Stan will manage a ranch in that area. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Magill, who had been working for his parents, have moved to Lind strom Bros. Ranch, where he is now employed. The junior class of the United Church of Christ has made plans for a Halloween party to be held the last Sunday in October. There are 17 enrolled in the class. The class is taught by Mrs. Bob Rietmann. BAfULAIM) - w J Jm. ft f 'v -- V T Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rietmann were hosts for dinner honoring two of their sons' birthdays on Sept. 30. Brian's 14th birthday was Sept. 30 and Mark 17 birthday was Oct. 1. Others present were Mrs. Margaret Hurst, Mrs. Shirley Anderson, and David Ander son, all from Arlington, and Mrs. Vera Rietmann, Joe and Gregg Rietmann, all of lone. Mrs. Jim West was hostess for a luncheon, with Mrs. John Doherty as special guest, at her home, Oct. 3. Mrs. Doherty is district director for the Maltelt-Yourself With Wool contest. The annual contest is spon sored by the Oregon Sheep Growers to encourage the use of wool in home sewing. Winners of the Junior and Senior division are awarded a trip to Portland to compete in the state contest. The sub-deb winner is awarded a sheepskin rug. Mrs. Doherty was in the lone area to make arrange ments with the participants from Morrow County. The contest is scheduled for Nov. 10 in the Blue Mountain Community College auditorium. John Rietmann is a member of the Oregon College of Education at Monmouth Marching Band. The group will perform next weekend for homecoming events. John, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Riet mann, is majoring in general studies. Marianne Pettyjohn was a first place winner in women's barrel racing at the Yakima Rodeo last weekend. She is now attending Oregon State University. Coach Gordon Meyers had the cast removed from his leg last week. He sustained a broken leg just before school started. Louis Carlson, Phil and Clint, drove to Klamath Falls over the weekend to view the facilities of Oregon Institute of Technology. Two lone youngsters have been on crutches. Darrin Padberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Padberg, broke his leg in two places. He is reported doing well, but will need to have the cast on for two more weeks. Anne Murray, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Rod Murray, sustained a badly bruised leg in a fall. She hopes to be able to abandon her crutches very soon. Friday. Oct. 12, is a sched uled teacher in-service day. There will be no school. The lone football team will play Touchet at 2 p.m. at lone. The only newcomer to the lone faculty this year is Marvin Peterson, industrial arts teach. Peterson is a native of Tacoma, where he attended Lincoln High School. He attended college at both Cen tral Washington State College at Ellensburg and Eastern Washington State College at Cheney. He obtained his bach elor's degree in 1973. Mrs. Peterson (Kathleen) also attended Central Wash ington State College, and is a lab technician. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson both enjoy bicycling on 10-speed bicycles. They are looking forward to doing some "rock hounding" while they are in Morrow County. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rietmann were host for a dinner held at their home Sunday to honor the 90th birthday of Mrs. Mabel Anson, a grandmother of Mrs. Rietmann. Mrs. Anson is from La Grande. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Del Anson and son, Steven, from Hermiston; Mr. and Mrs. Terry Thornburg and daughter, Terri Lee, and Joe and Jerry Rietmann. Students in both elementary and high school posed for individual school pictures, Oct. 3. The lone Girl's volleyball teams played Riverside Tues day and Helix on Thursday of last week. The teams are coached by Barbara Talley. Her summa tion of the week's game is that they won some and lost some and they had a lot of fun participating. The 6th grade class and its teacher, Clifford Williams, participated in a Conservation Field Trip to Bull Prairie, Oct. 4. The group observed some of the measures being taken to conserve land and water resources. Some of the topics covered were: forest soils, range management, outdoor manners, fire control, timber stand improvement, commer cial forest management, tree identification and wildlife. Refreshments will be served. Officers elected were Bob Rietmann, chairman; Mrs. Roland Bergstrom. vice chairman; and John Edmund son, secretary. . The purpose of the commit tee is to study both immediate and long range needs of the lone schools. One of the major concerns is providing ade quate school facilities in view of projected developments in Morrow County that might bring several more families to the area. 100 turn out to welcome teachers The lone Cardinal Club held its first meeting of the school year Sept. 27 in the school cafetorium. The meeting served to welcome new returning teach ers to the lone Schools, and a tea table was prepared in their honor. About 100 attended. John Edmundson, principal, introduced the faculty. A corsage was presented each lady. The corsages had been made by the lone Garden Club. First grade students, under the direction of Mrs. Bob Rietmann, presented a unison poem. Sherrie Bahr, music teacher, used the 2nd grade class to demonstrate methods used to teach music to elementary students. It was Miss Bahr's birthday, and at the conclusion of the demon stration she was presented with a cake. The Cardinal Club is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to be of service to the lone Schools. The club is now conducting its annual membership drive. Member ship is open to anyone who is interested in helping the lone Schools regardless of whether they have children in school or not. The money collected from dues of one dollar per person goes directly into a scholar ship fund that is awarded annually to a senior gradua ting from lone High School. Membership chairman is Mrs. Bob Rietmann. She is assisted by Mrs. Pete Cannon and Mrs, Bill Rietmann. '1
