A coldframe is fine for lettuce and radishes and for an early start of any trans plantable vegetable. And start planning your spring garden now. Tuck some cabbage plants among your roses - they are related you know. Speaking of roses, master gardener Jerry Baker sug gests using your old or off-color lipsticks (and what gal doesn't have'em?) instead of pruning paint when cutting roses or pruning them. Any stems more than U inch should be painted, whatever the time of year. Lipstick does the job and can be carried in your pocket. Looks gay too! OTHER NEAT IDEAS: Keep a quart jar in the refrigerator and pour into it any water left from cooking any vegetable. Use it in soups or stews, or freeze for future use. Freeze stock from cook ing meats and fowls. When cooking corn on the cob, particularly if not just cut, add a cup of milk (if you can afford it!) to the boiling salted water before dropping the corn, and cook in the usual way. It will be tender and delicious, and will stay that way for several hours if kept warm. Twenty-nine of Oregon's 36 counties were represented. Two speakers on the pro gram were Flpyd McKay, news analyst, KGW-TV; and Donald E. Clark, Multnomah County Commissioner. Saute ground beef with chopped onion and desired seasoning, fold into white sauce in which cheese has been melted, and alternate in a casserole with sliced fresh cooked zucchini; top with buttered bread crumbs and bake 30 minutes. Of course, you can stuff zucchini with almost anything and it's good. Try cottage cheese and seasoned toma toes, ground meal with toma-' toes, or just Spanish rice. And if you haven't tried Manicotto, this is a good time to do it: The sauce can be made' ahead of time, or you can but Ragout Sauce: Heat Mi cup oil in dutch oven, saute 14 cups chopped onion and one clove crushed garlic five minutes; mix in 1 2-pound can italian tomatoes, undrained, one can (6 oz.) tomato paste; 2 tablespoons chopped parsley; 1 tablespoon each salt and sugar; 1 tsp. dried oregano; 1 tsp. dried basil and tsp. pepper, with 1 cups water. Bring to boil, mashing toma toes, reduce heat and simmer covered one hour, stirring occasionally. MANICOTTI: (You can cut recipe in half if desired) Combine 6 eggs (at room temperature) 14 cups flour and h tsp. salt. Beat till smooth, let stand half hour or longer. Slowly heat 8-inch crepe pan or skillet, pour in 3 tablespoons batter rotating pan to spread evenly. Turn out on wire rack to cool. Continue cooking until all batter Is used. As Manicottl cool, stack them with waxed paper between. FILLING: In large bowl combine 2 pounds ricotta cheese, 8 oz. Mozzarella cheese, diced, 4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 2 eggs, 1 tsp. salt and tsp. pepper and 1 tablespoon chopped parsley. Stir with wooden spoon till well blended. TO ASSEMBLE: Spread about 4 cup filling down center of each manicotti and roll up. Spoon 14 cups sauce into each of two 12x8x2 inch baking dishes. Place eight rolled manicotti, seam side down in single layer; top with five more. Cover with 1 cup sauce; sprinkle with Parme san. Bake uncovered one-half hour, at 350F, or until bubbly. If desired, freeze one-half. To serve, let stand 1 hour to thaw, and bake covered, 1 hour at 350F. This sounds like a lot of work but it's worth it. IF YOU GROW ROSES: watch this column for fun ways of using them, like rose jelly, rose hip jam, rose syrup, rose vinegar and rose liquer. If you have a good Fall bloom, you might also like to try rose petal beads (always smell good) and potpourri. CAUTION : If you use sys- temic rose food, do not use roses for edible purposes.
