Wheeler Defending their title as the Big Sky Conference Cham pions, the lone Cardinals rolled passed the Wheeler Falcons 22-12 in a game played Saturday in Fossil. In the first quarter, Ione's Aaron Kinder ran 59 yards for 3 touchdown to put the cards an the scoreboard. lone scored another touchdown' in the second quarter when Mike Warren caught a Charlie McElligott pass and ran 55 yards for the 6 points. The Falcons came back to score a touchdown by Daryl Spivey on a 16-yard drive and trailed lone 16-6 at halftime. Klinger g rapped another touchdown in the third quarter for lone on his 55-yard run, securing the win for the Cardinals. Mustangs wallop Union, 48-0 The Heppner Mustangs rolled over the Union Bobcats 48-0 in their first practice game of the season Friday night at the Morrow County Fairgrounds. The Mustangs put it all . together in Friday night "s game, while their opponents just couldn't get started. Coach Chuck Starr summed it all up by saying, "I hope this is an indication of our strength and not of Union's weakness." Jerry Gentry played excep tionally ball as he "threw two TD passes to John Boyer, one TD pass to Karl Harrison, a 27-yard pass play to Jack Chittv. and scored a TD of his own by carrying the ball over from the 4-yard line. Harrison also scored a TD on a pass interception, and Mike Orwick scored the final TD on a running play. The Mustangs completed 10 out of 20 passes for 203 yards; Union completed "out of 15 for a total of 99 yards. Heppner led in first downs 10 to 5; gained 158 yards rushing to the Bobcats 99; intercepted 3 passes and recovered 3 fumbles. Co-op directors to be elected in September The nominating committee of Columbia Basin Electric Cooperative is to meet Sept. 27 to place nominees on the ballot for the annual meeting to be held Nov. 1. 1973, at Condon. Committee members were named for each district up for election this year. Roy A. Lindstrom is to serve on the committee from Zone 3; Bil Steiwer Jr. is to serve for the City of Fossil; Rudy Berg strom,Zone4; and Jim Morris is on the committee for nominations at large for the system. The following are the dis tricts for which nominees are to be named: Zone 3; which is northern Morrow County, includes all members north of the Base Line. Incumbent is Dick Krebs. City of Fossil; incumbent is Herb Wright. Zone 4; which is the area et-at of the Morrow - Gilliam County line, south of William ette Meridian, southern boun dary is north of Lonerock five miles, and that area which lies Two Heppner men enlist in U. S. Army James H. McLachlan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrel McLach lan, and Jeffery A. Marshall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Marshall, both of Heppner. were scheduled to begin their enlistment in the UJS. Army Monday Marshall will leave from Portland for training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He will later take training at Ft. Sam Houston, Tex., to become a medical lab technician. McLachlan, after basic training in Missouri, will undergo training at the U.S. Army Engineer school at Ft. Bel voir, Va., specializing in mobile electric power generation. In accordance with the by-laws of the co-op, "The committee shall prepare and post at the principal office of the Cooperative at least twen ty (20) days before the meeting a list of nominations for directors, but any fifteen (15) or more members may make other nominations in writing over their signatures not less than fifteen (15) days prior to the meeting and the Secretary shall post the same at the same place where the list of nominations made by the committee is posted." In addition, nominations may be made at the meeting from the floor. The co-op annual meeting will be held at the fair grounds in Condon beginning with lunch at noon on Nov. 1. FFA team wins honors at Sherman Fair The Heppner FFA judging team won another first place at the Sherman County Fair. This is the fourth time in five years that the Heppner team has won this top honor, placing second the other year. Members of the team in clude Kyle Robinson, Barry Munkers, Rhonda Sargent, Judi and Sandy Bennett, and Kelwayne and Kristi Hague wood. Kelwayne Ha ge wood placed first in individual honors whil Kristi Haguewood placed 2nd, Rhonda Sargent, 5th, Judi Bennett, 6th, and Barry Mun kers, 9th, among the top 10 winners. . Competing for the top hon ors were Sherman and The Dalles high schools. Robert John Jespersen, Heppner, is on the honor roll at Oregon College of Educa tion, Monmouth, for the eight week summer session which ended Aug. 10. Riverside goes to 11-man game When Riverside meets Prai rie City this Friday, Sept. 14, they will be competing in their first 11-man football game. The non-conference game begins at 2 p.m. at the Riverside football field. . Before joining the A -11 man Columbia Basin League, Riverside has competed in the A-8 man Big Sky League. Mike Wetherell, Riverside's new football coach, feels this year will be one of rebuilding and adjusting for the team. "A junior high football program also has been initiated to build a stronger football team," he stated. Deschutes partly closed State Game Director John W. McKean has ordered an emergency angling closure on a short section of the Deschutes River immediately below Wickiup Reservoir. Low water conditions in the. reservoir have forced large numbers of fish to move down into the river where they have become easy prey for anglers using dipnets and other illegal devices. The closure took effect on Sept. 1, and will remain in force through the end of the angling season from Wickiup Dam downstream approxi mately '-rnile to the gauging station. Red Cross seeking volunteers Board members of . the Morrow County chapter of the American lied Crows met at the First National Bank con ference room Friday evening. Itunny Wilson, volunteer from division headquarters in Spokane, instructed members on Aid to Military Families procedures. R.B. Cogbum will be chair man of the fall fund drive in Morrow County. He will also succeed Dorothy Heard as county chairman. Mrs. Heard will serve as vice-chairman. The Morrow County chapter is actively seeking volunteers to assist with the fall fund drive. There is also a need for a co-chairman of Aid to Military Families. Anyone new to the com munity, who has worked with Red Cross previously or is interested in becoming a new volunteer, is asked to contact Mrs. Heard at 676-5009. Area residents interested in dona ting their time to volunteer service are also being sought. Board members present were Bethel Heinrichs, Tiny Sweeney, Ann Toney, Greg Davidson, Lillian Sweek, Neil Poulson and Mrs. Heard. Fred Mankin rides again! Wrangler members and workers at the Wrangler's Horse Show were pleased with the appearance of Fred Man kin at the recent event. Fred, who is a patient at Pioneer Memorial Hospital, was accompanied by his son. Bud Mankin. In the 25 years of the Horse Show, Mankin served as superintendent for 22 years. It has become tradition for him to donate the prizes for the open barrel race winners. First place winner receives a saddle blanket and second place winners are awarded boot bags. Mary had a time or 17.7 to place first in the barrel racing event. Heppner winners at Gilliam Rodeo Heppner girls raced away with top honors at the Gilliam County Fair and Rodeo, Sun day. Sept. 9. Mary Healy captured first place with a time of 17.7 in the senior barrels. Second place went to Jill Rugg with a 17.9 and Joan Eckman placed third with 18.1. A time of 17.9 captured a second place for Jana Steagall in junior barrels. Maureen Healy finished third with a time of 18.2. First place honors in girls steer dobbing went to Michelle Evans with a fast time of 1.3 seconds. In the team roping competi tion, Matt Murray, Heppner, and Sherman Murray, La Grande, roped their steer in 15.2 to place second out of 38 teams entered.
