He crushed the first rocks for Heppner' streets and for the highway from Wiseman's to Jones' hill during 1918 In 1924 the couple moved to a ranch on lower Willow Creek which is still in the family Finally, due to his illness. Mr and Mrs. Crow ell were forced to move into lone. In 113 Mr Crowell entered the Pioneer Nursing Home and in 1SC0 Mrs Crowell entered the Nursing home to be with her husband II w as reported that Jolmxon Van Marter, 78. had dropped dead Saturday morning at his home in Yakima He was a brother of La Verne Van Marter. Sr of Heppner. He had been sales manager in Seattle for Uestinghouse Electric for the Northwest and Alaska district before his retirement. The Van Martens here were awaiting word early this week of the date of the funeral sen ices at Yakima, believed to be on Wednesday. MRS. MUTER OSI.l'ND. daughter of Mrs Wavel Wilkin son has been visiting in Heppner for the past several days. Her husband will join her later in the month and they will return to their home in Newcastle. Scores were not turned in to the T-Cup. but if they all enjoyed themselves, that is the main thing. This is a yearly affair, and we are pleased they choose Willow Creek Country Club on w hich to Play Golfers At C ondon Heppner golfers went to Condon to play this last Sunday. The only winner turned in to our column was that Eddie Gunder son won the "Sole Survivor" play . Good for you Eddie. Barbecue. SCOTT FURLONG had as her dinner guests on Me morial Day. her brother-in-law and sister, Mrs. Fred Stark and her nephews, Mark Carlson, all of Portland. Her two grand daughters. Mrs. Bill McLeod and Scott of Pendleton and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Griner of La Grande were also there for dinner. Coming from Heppner for dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Verlin Matthews and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Mover. Visit Phil Strandvold Phil Strandvold met his , mother. Mrs. Evelyn Strand vold of Portland at Arlington and she visited here several day last week. They were joined by her sister. Mrs. Myrtle Rogers and Mrs. Helen Cooper both of Portland on Saturday lor the Memorial Day weekend. On Sunday, they drove to Shaniko for dinner. Several from the Eastern Oregon Hospital staff came over as did a group from the Umatilla County Mental Health Center. Those from the Mental Health Center were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Jensen who were accompanied by Mr. Jensen's mother from Helena. Montana. Madelaine Connell and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Barnes. GEORGE HOGG of Paxton, Nebraska visited last weekend with her cousin. Mrs. Charles Heard and Mr. Heard. While here they drove up to Lake Penland. The Nebraska folks are used to flat land and aren't prepared for Oregon's mountain roads. They were advised to go back to Pendleton by way of Echo rather than Pilot Rock.
