New this year were Grants-in-Aid to the seniors of Morrow County High Schools from the Carl W. Troedson estate. Kathleen Bartlett and Tami Meador the Salutatorian awards. Honor students named were Luanne Kelly. Mary Abrams and Avery (Butch) Taylor. "I Dare You" awards went to Shanney Farley and Jim Cuts forth. Oregon Scholar awards went to Mary Abrams, Kathleen Barlett. Bill Jepsen. Luanne Kelly. Tami Meador. Seniors named to the Society of Outstanding American High Schools were Mary Abrams. Kathleen Bartlett. Bill Jepsen, Luanne Kelly, Tami Meador. Allen McCabe got the Jim Barratt Award for the all around athlete. Dean Naffziger made the presentation. Most of the other awards were present ed by principal Jim Bier. Dennis McKay Mr. McKay, former counsellor at Heppner High School said he was honored when he was asked to return to give the commence ment address for the class of 1973. His theme was "Commun ications". He urged the students to live in the present, to live each day for itself. Think about tomorrow but don't live for tomorrow. He introduced his wife and three daughters. Robin and the new identical twin daughters. Jennifer and Kimberly, who he couldn't tell apart. Superintendent of Schools Ron Daniels and Mrs. Vi Lanham presented the class. Irvin Rauch, member of the Morrow County Board of Edu cation presented the diplomas to 46 seniors. Seniors formed a line in the cafetorium to receive the well wishes of their friends and relatives. Drama Mary Abrams and Greg David son were named best actress and actor in a three-act. and were presented gifts as out standing drama students for the year. Home I'.c Tracie Norene received the Betty Crocker Homemaking Award from Linda Panter. home economics teacher. The Crisco Award went to Kathleen Bartlett. Journalism (Ireg Davidson was presented with the trophy he won at the National Scholastic Press As sociation conference in April by advisor Dennis Toney. The award was for first place in the editorial writing contest. language Arts Language Arts awards were presented by Jane Rawlins. A creative writing award went to Greg Davidson, selected on the basis of all writings done in the English department. Shannon Kelly was awarded a certificate for her knowledge and under standing of literature. won at competition in Wallowa earlier this spring. Receiving the trophy were seniors Barb ara Sherman, Lisa McCabe, Debbie Peck; juniors Toni Toll and Donna Bellamy. GAA Awards Dean Naffziger presented the GAA Awards. Kathleen Bartlett and Susan Healy were recog nized for being named to Who's Who in Oregon Track and Field for the 1972 season. Track awards for this year went to Robinai Riddle, manager; Susan Healy, Tami Toll and Lori Dunlap. Certificates of merit for basketball were presented to managers Anita Davidson and Juanita Wilson; Cyde Allstott, Mary Healy, Lolita Marquardt, Kimee llaguewood, Sandy Bennett. Molly Pierce. Donna Bellamy, Judy Bennett, Knsti Hague wood and Susan Healy. Volley ball awards were given to Cindy Rogers, manager; Cyde Alston, Knsti Haguewood, Joan Christman. Kristi Hague wood and Charma Marquardt. Next year's student body officers were sworn In by the ouigoing officers. Serving next year will tie Susan Healy, president; Mike Mills, vice president: Judy Bennett, trea surer; Anita Davidson, assistant treasurer; Kristi Haguewood. secretary; Dave McLeod. business manager; and Jim Marquardt, Sergeant at arms. Dan A. Wright of Rt. 1, Heppner, has been accepted for fall term at Treasure Valley Community College at Ontario. Dean will major in police science. Three of next year's sopho mores were chosen junior varsity cheerleaders at Hepp ner High Friday. Lori Dunlap. Tammy Bran non and Kelly Harrison will assume cheerleading responsi bilities at JV and freshmen sporting events next fall. This is the first year elections for the JV squad have been held in the spring. A constitutional amendment was recently ap proved by the student body to change the tryouts to the spring to allow the squad more time to prepare for fall's activities. The vasity rally squad, elect ed after tryouts in April, consists of next-year juniors Judy Healy, Marjie Roberts and Mary Healy: seniors Toni Toll and Donna Bellamy. Social Studies Social Studies awards were presented by Robert Nash. Outstanding Modern Problems Award went to Luanne Kelly; Outstanding U.S. History Award went to Kristi Hague wood; and Tom Wolff was named the "news finder" for the year. Shannon Kelly was named the Spanish student for the year. Chemistry awards, presented by teacher Duane Neiffer, went to John Roark. Jim Ployhar and Luke Padberg. Top physics student for the year was Bill Jepsen. Freshmen Gordon Minter. Kathy Burchum and Tammy Brannon; and sopho more Kelwayne Haguewood were named top Earth Science students. Spring Musical Presented by Band snd Chcms Library- Awards for outstanding library service, presented by librarian Madge Thomson, went to Kay Munkers, Trisha Prock. Judy Healy. Kerry Coppock, Michele Evans. Diane Mc Lachlan. Debbie Yocom, Barb ara McCarl. Helen Byrne, Carol Hughes. Dianne Cox, Sally Winters. Sandra Palmer and Peggy Schlichting. Only one perfect attendance certificate was presented by Mr. Bier, and that went to freshman Steve Jones. Varsity cheerleaders were presented with the trophy they 2 I ( r. f L'Al The Spring Concert presented by the Heppner High School band and Chorus was delightful even though it was put on under adverse conditions. Several "regulars" were absent but those participating tried nobly to fill the gaps. The Hand There was a change of pace frequently that provided a welcome variation. Anita Davidson as one of the student conductors led the band with a great deal of authority. Mary Abrams also took her turn with the baton effectively. The band played Charter Oak March. Chorale. Latina. St. Anthony Divertimento. Bacharach and David. Store front Lawyers and Sounds of the Three Dog Night. On two of the songs. Larry Hildebrandt, din-dor joined the band to play the guitar. High School Band members were: Flute - Kerry Coppock Lisa Collins. Twilla Riddle; Clarinet - Charma Marquardt, Dena Struthers; Itass Clarinet -Juanita Wilson; Alto Sax - Dana Sweek, John Luciani, David Wnrden, Kelly Harrison. Tenor Sax - Anita Davidson: Cornet-Tnimprt-Mark Schlich ting. Todd Cox. Brian Boner, Kyle Buschke; Trombone -Allen Burkenbine; Baritone -Shannon Kelly, David Camp bell. Lori Dunlap; Sousaphone -James Marquardt: percussion -Mary Abrams. Steve Jones. The Chorus The Chorus also presented a variety program from con temporary, some very Ameri can, the theme from Fiddler on the Roof, folk music, spirituals and cosed by singing an Old Irish Blessing acapella. Kristi Haguewood and Jau nita Wilson gained experience as accompanists as they took turns with Mr. Jesperson Di rector, in playing the piano. The Chorus sang the Exodus Song. I thank you God, The Pasture, Choose Something like a star. Consider Yourself, Sunrise. Sunset (Fiddler on the Roof) They call the wind Maria ( Paint Your Wagon). Black and White and Poor Man Lazrus and the finale Old Irish Blessing. Gift Presented Mrs. Dale Boner who has worked as president of the Band Parents and who is moving from Heppner was presented with a gift from the band. L tM L Mrs. Dale Boner has just been presented with a gift of appreciation from the Heppner High School Band. Mr. McKay gave the Commencement address at Heppner. lone High has 16 Graduating Seniors lone graduation was held May 26 at 8 00 p.m. with 16 seniors receiving their diplomas, The processional, recessional and other music was played by Darrel James, former music teacher at lone. The invocation was given by David Warren. Kathleen Mc Elligott delivered her valedic tory address and the salutatory was given by Gregg Wilson. Special music was presented when Mr. and Mrs. Darrel James sang "Friends" accompanied by Mrs. Bill Rjetmann. Guest speaker was Dr. Harold Beggs, former principal of lone. Don McElligott presented the diplomas. The benediction was given by Melissa McElligott. The honor guard was formed by the junior class. The following poem was written by Cassandra Chapel. summing up, in her mind's eye, the graduation. Graduation 73 I stood in awed silence The speaker had said "Amen". The kids I loved so dearly Were now Women and men. In the light I saw them coming. To pass through the honor guard. Going forth to meet their future In a world that's mighty hard. I knew they were leaving forever The school days of lone high. A tear slipped down from my eyelash. As we said our last goodbys. I know not what will happen As they take their place in time. But I know they will have many blessings. The Central Washington State team, of which she is a member, placed 3rd. with BMCC taking 1st and the OSU team 2nd. Marianne tied with Jill Rugg for 2nd in barred racing for the regional finals and both girls will attend the National finals in Bozeman, Mont, in June. SWIM FREE!!!
