Portland, was in Heppner on business over the weekend. The tenth annual Auction and Barbecue sponsored by the lone United Church of Christ will be held on June 2nd at the Willows Grange Hall in lone. The various committees are busy with plans and work assign ments. However, one member of the Barbecue committee started his work over a year ago. Fred Nelson, boss of the pit, has been gathering the fire wood. He always likes to have it cut and stacked a long time, preferably a year, in advance. This gives him the assurance the wood will be dry enough and that he will have plenty in reserve. He estimates it takes at least a cord and a half to barbecue the 380 pounds of top round beef that goes into the pit. Fred prefers fruit wood of any kind or locust wood. While he uses the limbs, he would rather have the trunk wood. Trunks burn slower and this is im portant to produce the two feet of hot coals required to do the cooking job. He mans the chain Services MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES The Mental Health Depart ment is a new service for Morrow Co. and in order to take advantage of it, you may need to know just when the office is open and what days Mr. Mitchum, director, is where. The office in Heppner, on Willow St., is open five days a week from 8:30 to 5:00. (It is usually closed from 12: 00 to 1:00 p.m). Mr. Mitchum is in Heppner, or the area close by, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. He travels to Boardman on Mondays and has an office set up there in the Community Church. At 3:00 p.m. he is at one of Boardman's schools coun seling with teachers. On Tuesday he is in Pendleton where he teaches a class and works with various agencies there. If you wish to meet with Mr. Mitchum, you should make an appointment ahead of time by calling the office in Heppner at 676-9161. saw himself as he is a wood gathering committee of one. He says he recruits help from anyone willing to lend a hand or from those who want a tree removed. Wood gathering is but one part of Fred's job. After the pit is prepared by Eldon Tucker, he starts the fire about 1 p.m. the day before the barbeque. He uses only paper and fine dry wood to kindle the fire. He never uses lighter fluids of any kind. He said "One year it rained and put our fire out. We had to start over and so we used some oil. I thought I could smell that oil when we dug the meat out. So, I have never used anything since." Fred tends the fire all afternoon, evening, and half way through the night. He says it isn't a lonely chore as there is always someone who drops by to visit with him. ' About 1 a.m., Bob Rietmann's meat wrapping crew helps Fred put the meat into the pit and cover it with alxiut a foot and half of dirt. Then the Barbecue committee can relax until about an hour before mealtime. Fred supervises the digging out process and the removal of several big 15 pound roasts and delivers them to the kitchen.
