Riverside & Heppner High Schools Evaluated, Heppner Falls Short Boardman Starts Little League Riverside High School of Boardman received full c- creditatkm by the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools according to announcement last week by Sup't Ron Daniels. Heppner High School was approved with comment. The comment was that the school needs Improved facilities to make the Vocational-Technical, Industrial Arts and Art pro grams more functional and challenging to students. The district is well aware of the short comings at Heppner High School and have included improved facilities In the Vo cational Technical and Indus trial Arts in the long-range plans. The people of the district recently voted down a serial levy which would have provided new facilities as recommended in the comment of the Accredi tation committee. Favorable Comment The school received several commendation, d. for the varied educational program, innovation in the curriculum, excellent teacher-pupil ratio, guidance program, all certifi cated personnel are assigned to their areas of preparation, wrll equipped media renter and good media center budget, plans for stuff to develop own goals and evaluation In light of school philosophy and goals. The Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools evaluates each school on a set of criteria that relates to certifi cation of teachers, teachers asKigned areas where they are arrreditated, class size and building conditions etc. ..This year's evaluation was done from a six page report after an on-site inspection last year. There are four types of accreditation: fully approved, approved with comment, approved with warning and disapproved. Riverside was complimented on its excellent report and "the school is commended for con tinuing its efforts to meet student needs by individualizing instruction." All three high schools in the county meet the Oregon Board accreditation standards. lone High School is not a member of the Northwest Association of Secondry and Higher Schools. The following officers were elected for the 1973 season : President, Dan Creamer of Irrigon; vice-president, Mrs. Don Leighton of Boardman; secreatary treasurer, Don Leighton of Boardman; purchasing agent, John Alford of Echo; player agent, Wayne Schnell of Irrigon; board of directors Echo. Al Beem; Stanficld, Ken Manns; Umatilla, Del Tipton; Boardman and Irrigon, Billy Griffin; Arlington, Mike Wetherell. The next meeting will be held Mar. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Echo school. All Little League parents are urged to attend. Irrigon Resident Returns From Calif. Vacation There were six tables of pinochle in play at the card party held Tuesday of last week at the Greenfield Grange hall, sponsored by the Women's Activity Committee of the grange. Mrs. Ben Donovan was hostess. High prize was won by Mrs. Albert Warnock and second high went to Rose Gilmore of Arlington. Mrs. Gillmore and Mrs. Ed Kuhn received the traveling pinochle prizes. By FRANCES ROSE WILSON Jeannette Hodge has returned to her home in Irrigon after spending 3 weeks in Oakland, Calif, where she visited her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn McKenzie. They toured a number of points of interest in Calif, including Russian River and Gener. She especially injoyed flying home over the Cascade Range and appreciated the view of the Three Sisters and Mt. Hood from the plane. daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Havekost in Bisalia, Calif. He also visited his sister-in-law, Pearl Martin in Arroyo Grande, Calif. VISITING Steve Partlow of Anchorage, Alaska visited last week at the home of his mother, Mrs. La Verne Partlow. Mrs. Partlow went to Othello, Wash, during the weekend to visit at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Stanhope. Riverside Jr. -Sr. High School Menu Monday, March 5--Corn dogs, french fries, pickled beets and cake. Tuesday, March 6--Pizza. buttered green beans, fruit and ice cream bars. Wednesday, March 7-Turkey gravy, fluffed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, vegetable sticks and brownies. Thursday, March -Bear. and bacon, hot rolls, cheese sticks and jello. Friday, March 8--Tuna fish and peanut butter sandwiches, buttered corn and strawberry short cake. Bread, butter and milk are served with all meals. Interstate Road Hearing In its continuing effort to provide the best possible corri dor considerations for Inter state 82, the Oregon State Highway Division will present an additional possibility at the public hearing scheduled for March 1 in Pendleton, it was announced today by W.E. Schwartz, region engineer in LaGrande. The new proposition will be officially designated "Corridor H Alternate," and will extend from Interstate 80N, near the western edge of Pendleton in a generally northerly direction to the Washington border. The plans call for the proposed corridor to run generally north along the section lines so there wil be the least possible damage to individual ownerships bo cause of severance. HEPPNER (ORE.). There were seven pee-wee sized cow girls showing off their riding skills in competition for the coveted places of Queen and two princesses. Parents Club Sponsors Talent Show A dinner and talent show will be given by the A.C.Houghton Parents Club on Friday, March 2. The dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. with the talent show following at 7:30 p.m., at the school cafetorium in Irrigon. Good News Singers The Good News Singers have been very active during the past winter months and have min istered in song to many churches of the area. On Feb. 18 they were in charge of the service at the West Park Baptist Church in Hermiston. Last Sunday they sang at the Woodland Chapel in Portland. They are all members or former members of the Irrigon Com munity Baptist Church. Mrs. Dick Struckmeier and son Shawn of Phoenix, Ore. visited last week at the home of her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Struckmeier. Mrs. Frank Marlow ac companied her sister-in-law, Mrs. Roy Marlow of Umatilla, to Portland Sunday and visited at the home of her sister, Mrs. Lafe Smith. If "Corridor H Alternate" invites sufficient interest, studies will be incorporated into the final environmental impact state ment. Each girl was judged 25 percent on personality, 25 percent on appearance and 50 percent on riding ability. Qualifications for competition were that contestants be be tween the ages of 6 and 12. The seven girls on this day were 9 and 12 years of age. Their horses were to be not more than 54 inches, and they were to be able to attend any rodeo asked of them. The girls were led through their paces by the outgoing Queen of last year's 2nd annual Pee Wee Rodeo who is also the 1973 All North Western Pee Wee Rodeo Queen, Allison Sherrell of Hermiston. Lucky girls for this year were Queen Idella Ray Vetter of Hermiston, Princess Ida Mae Vetter of Hermiston and Robin Stewart of Irrigon. Judging for this event were Ival Sullivan of the Irrigon Appaloosa Training Stables, Mrs. J.L.Bartlett and Mrs. Jess Montgomery both of Hermiston. Jhe girls are to have, a dance, given in honor of each of them. Robin's dance will be March 31, Ida's April 7 and Idella 's April 28. The Pee Wee Rodeo is schedueled for May 19 and 20. of Umatilla ministered at the Assembly of God in Irrigon in the absence of Pastor Wesley Cronk on Feb. 25. The Rev. and Mrs. Wesley Cronk have re signed as pastors of the Irrigon Church and have accepted the pastorate in Weed, Calif. A farewell service is planned for Sun., March 4. A church pot-luck dinner is planned to follow and will be served in the parsonage basement. There will be a singspiration service in the afternoon. Riverside FFA Members ode mm Word of Death Received Word was received in Irrigon by Mrs. Josephine Buchanan of the death of her nephew, George Ingersoll 32, of Spray. He was the pastor of the Assembly of God there and had been in poor health for some time. He leaves his wife Marilyn and 4 children, ages 2 to 9 years. The Rev. and Mrs. Cecil Ahalt of Rogue River are with their daughter, Mrs. Ingersoll, this week. The funeral was planned for Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. in Spray, with interment. Baptismal Service The irrigon Community Baptist Church held a baptismal service at the First Baptist Church in Hermiston on Feb. 18. Those receiving baptism were Charlena, Christina and Candy Ashby, Norman Eppenbach and his son Mark, and Monica and Brenda, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Eppenbach. Sara Nunez, from Costa Rica, who has been a guest at the Joe Stephens home in Portland, accompanied them. Their son Ricky, a high school senior, spent several months in Costa Rica during the past summer as an exchange student.
