DONNA PETERSON What's All American? The description w ill vary in differ ent parts of the country de pending on the people ques tioned. But in Morrow County Donna Peterson, Mrs. Bob Peterson, undoubtedly fills the bill. This unpretentious young woman is completing her sec ond year as Morrow County Fair and Rodeo Court Chap erone. She is loaded with tal ents you wouldn't believe but in the same breath she says, Jaycees Farewell Wonsers The Jaycees had planned a swimming party followed by supper Sunday evening as their farewell for the Pat Wonsers and the Marvin Sumners. Showers cancelled the swimming so they gath ered at Library Park to make ice cream. They broiled their steaks and hamburgers in a shower of rain which didn't diminish their good time. The Wonsers will be moving to Pendleton as soon as housing can be found. Pat, last year's Jaycee president, has already started his new posi tion as assistant manager at the Oregon Bank They were presented with a green crystal bowl and match ing candlesticks as their farewell gift from the Heppner Jovcees. the Sumners were not able to attend "I ike this" many faceted Donna Peterson visus wun mcnua ovr a cup of coffee. "Oh that isn't anything". First a home and family wo man, it has bothered her that she might be neglecting her family as she jaunts around the country with the court. She has welcomed the assistance of Clista Venard (Mrs. John Venard ) this year. They travel together or share responsibili ties as time and work permits. Both are tops in the eyes of the Court. Donna is an enthusiastic Morrow County Fair booster. As co-leader with her husband of the Gooseberry Livestock Club, leader of a 4-H Horse Club and her own children's fair activities she is more than an onlooker. She is all for the 4-H members training and grooming their own animals. She feels this is their responsi bility to assume as well as a valuable learning process. She at Conference Subjects as diverse as non-verbal communication and human ecology were combined in the fifth National Nutrilite Key Conference from which Mr. and Mrs. Hal Whitaker, Heppner, returned Aug. 18th. The Aug. 14-16 conference at Anaheim Convention Center, was for key distributors of Nutrilite Food Supplements, Edith Rehnborg Cosmetics and Nutrilite Household Pro ducts. . , . . Nutrilite Products, Inc., which conducted Aug. 17 tours for the independent distributors, who are self-employed busi nessmen and women. Keys toured the company's manu facturing and quality control facilities in Buena Park and visited Lakeview, where they saw the Nutrilite Research Center ' The Whitakers also visited Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm, 1 Invitation Mr and Mrs C1de Petty John invite all friends and relatives to the marriage of their daughter. Susan Elua beth, to Thomas Llc Fergu son, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley A Ferguson of Kla math Falls Mr. Ferguson has complet ed two years in the Peace Corps in Iran and will be attending graduate school at Oregon State doing research in Food Toxicology Susan has her Bachelor of Science de gree from the University of Oregon School of Nursing. She has just returned home after a six month tour of Europe. September I has been set for the date of the wedding at the Heppner United Methodist Church. Goden Agers Picnic The Golden Agers planned their annual summer picnic for last Sunday at the Court House Lawn. Due to the showers they moved their picnic to the Elks Club. Here they had their usual good time of visiting and eating. Plans were made for the September potluck which will be held at the Elks Club dining room on the first Tuesday in Septem ber which is the 5th. Clista Venard doing the thing and then goes "courting" on is also appreciative of co operative parents. Members do need help in transporting animals and themselves and much encouragement and praise during the entire pro ject. Occasionally she is told "Being a 4-H leader is a thankless task." But Donna gets her thanks and goes all goose pimples with pleasure when she gets that certain look from one of her club members when they have won a ribbon and good words from the judge. She practices what she preaches with her own off spring, Rick 15 and Dawn 13. This week she says "It would have been so easy to have said 'We haven 't time to take Dawn down to the State Fair' but I believe going on after you have won is part of the responsibility of winning." So Bob went to Salem with Dawn and Donna stayed home with Rick who is washing steers and grooming them for the fair. Donna and the board had this thing going last year that she was to ride in the parade. She wasn't too keen about it. Then she surprised them by riding side saddle in the parade. The beautiful tapes tried saddle belonged to Betty Fulleton's grandmother. This year the chaperones will be riding in a buggy driven by Joe Yocom. Donna was responsible for running down the century of styles modeled at the Coro nation. Old things have lots of appeal for her. She is a collec tor of antiques but she likes the ones she finds. When Rick and Dawn are out riding they watch for old bottles to bring home to her. One of the things she likes, is a one-room pot bellied stove they found in a nearly-falling down-house. Donna spent three days with the electric sander taking off the rust. Now it is the base for an elegant lamp. The family enjoys having Grandma and Grandpa living on the ranch with them. They are Mr. and Mi s. Vic Lovgren. Donna and her mother panel ed their family room with old barn siding. One wall is covered with brands. Their own brand is framed with a handsome horse collar. She sews near-profession-ally. She has made a suede coat for Bob and a blue suede coat for herself. She gathered deer hides, salted them down herself and then traded them for tanned ones. The busiest time this sum mer for the court will be this week, and w ill climax w ith the Rodeo this weekend MRS DAN JAMES.Tommy and Mardel went to Milton Freewater Wednesday to visit her folks. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stewart. she likes to do at First National the weekend! use a pattern. One time when Dawn was little and needed some western pants, she laid her on the draining board and cut out a pair to fit her. Leather tooling is another hobby she enjoys. She has made each member of the court a purple tote bag to match her outfit. Tooled leather boots with members' names on them in lavender decorate each tote bag. She has a capacity for doing the unusual and doing it well Clista Venard In talking about acting as chaperone for the court, Clista Venard says "It's a good experience for me. I enjoy the girls. They are delightful." With no daughters of her own, Clista has for the summer, five of them in Queen Susie and her four princesses. She has enjoyed the weekend ac tivities. Never bored at the dances, she has enjoyed watching the crowd. She has admired the girls as they have graciously abided by the rules that are set down for their conduct. This is Clista's second time to live in Heppner. Her late husband John Venard was manager of First National in 1957-59 then an assignment at Klamath Falls to return to Heppner in 1964. After he died she accepted a position in the bank and is doing the job she likes best to do. . She likes to sew as her mother taught her. Her com panion is a black lab "Billie" who has the run of the house when Clista returns from work. While it is a good while off, Clista is eyeing retirement on the sound at Sequim, Wa. near Port Angeles. With this mar velous water front property, there's crabbing and clam ming rights. Clista isn't uptight about anything and appears thor oughly relaxed and enjoys just living.
