CINDY KKSTHOM Mr. and Mrs. Pete Cannon of lone, announce the engage ment of their daughter Cath leen Ann to Frank Dee Hal vorsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen of lone. Mi.ss Cannon is a 1972 grad uate of lone High School. Mr. Halvorsen lias attended Blue Mountain Community College and Eastern Oregon College and is presently ranching in lone. A September 17 wedding is being planned. CATHY CANNON AAUW names temporary officers The first steps toward forming an American Association of University Wo men branch in Heppner were taken at a meeting on July 10. Donna Talus, state mem bership chairman, and Judy Harwagon, president of the John Day branch of AAUW, met with a small group of interested women to discuss the purposes of AAUW and to outline the procedure for setting up a new branch. Mrs. Talus explained that AAUW, which is open to any woman with a bachelor's de gree from an accredited col lege, offers women a unique opportunity to study current problems and issues and to become actively involved in community affairs. She noted that fifteen members are nec essary for establishing a new branch. Following Mrs. Talus' presentation, the group elect ed temporary officers. Mrs. Richard Curtis, Mrs. Bill Landc, Mrs. Dennis Martin and set September 12 as the date for a membership meet ing, at a time and place to be announced later. Any woman Interested in learning more about AAUW is urged to contact Mary Pat Lande at 676-9752 for further information. ALASKA VISIT Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Irby visited in Ketchikan, Alaska from July 1 to 15 with Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Kwa-llek and family, Kris and Betsy. Mrs. Kwallek is their daughter and the plane tickets were a gift from the Kwalleks to the Irbys. The group enjoyed deep sea fishing and Elvira caught a shark. They also had a good time flying in a sea plane into the back country to a lake for good fishing. Seventeen Drum and Bugle Corps performed be fore I large crowd. The 5;30 to 11:30 program had fur its Grand Finale, the assembly of 1400 misicians which was a combination of all the groups. It was most colorful and loud according to Kae dene Hollonion. Lights and flags added to the perfor mance. Mr. and Mrs. Bob DeSjain also went over for the pro gram. Bob said, "It was fantastic. The nusic and the precision was great". Oregon entrees came from Salem, West Linn, Pendleton, Portland, Astoria. Other en trees came from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Seattle, Spo kane, Sunnyvale, Ca.; Santa Ana, Ca.; Tri-Cities, Wa.; Carson, Ca.; and Vancouver Portland. Paraphenelia own ed by the marching groups totaled more than one-half million. Playing with the Rangers were Jim & Andy Myers of Hermiston formerly of Heppner when their father owned Phil's Pharmacy. Reunion A WARM SUMMER DAY at Anson Wright Park was the setting for the annual McDaniel Family Reunion July 16. About 40 people at tended the gathering: not as many as in the past years, but still a good turnout. Local people were in good atten dance. Mrs. Gladys Corrigall, Portland and Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Stubblefield and child ren of Walla Walla traveled the farthest. The reunion is held on the third Sunday of July each year. Henry Gor ge r were recently honored al a beautiful reception on their 50th wrdding annivrrury, hinted by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Uvid tnier uf lone; Mr. and Mra. Uale Ben nett of Pilot Rock; nd daughter-in-law, Mri. Paul ine Gorger of Portland. Un able to attend was their son, BUI, who telephoned his greetings from Hawaii. The reception was held in the Parish Hall of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Chairman fur the reception was M-. LeoGorger, sister-in-law of the couple. Golden chrysanthemums and gladioli with gold ribbons were used about the room, with an es pecially lovely arrangement on (lie gift Utile. A three tiered white cake with gold lettering andgoldaccents was displayed. The honorees received guests, sealed in a pair of antique heirloom rocking chairs. Mrs. Gorger wore a light blue, two piece peau do sole gown, with mitching blue jeelry, and a white orchid, a present from her husband. Centering individual tables around the room were bud vases with rose buds from Mr. Gorger' s garden. Hi Is considered an expert in rose culture. Serving cake were a niece, Mrs. Ken Forsythe of Port land and a granddaughter, Mrs. Jerry Kindrick from The Dalles; at the coffee urns were Mrs. Leonard Heroes and Miss Gwendolyn Ramey; serving punch were grand daughters, Miss Debra and Miss Shirley Baker; at the gift table were grandsons, Tim Bennett, Pilot Rock, Robert Baker of lone andStevenGor ger of Portland: and at the guest book were granddaugh ters, Teresa and Toni Ben nett. Many friends and relatives attended from the lone area, and the honored couple re ceived many lovely gifts and congratulations from those unable to attend. Their child ren's special gift was a chest of gold table ware, which was most appreciated. Tanya Tucker graduates Tanya Tucker graduated from BMCC Practical Nurse course. Capping ceremony was held Sunday at the Col lege for 17 students. Tanya is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Tucker of lone. Dr. Harcourt gave the address. Going over for the cere mony were the Eldon Tucker family, Mrs. Tom White and Sabrinaand Mrs. Cleo Drake, all of lone. Mrs. Ella Byerly of Boise is a great grandmother. DOVIE ALDERMAN has set August 19 at 11 a.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church for her marriage to Mike Bunch. MR. AND MRS. JACK PARRISH and son, Scott of Lake Oswego, visited here last weekend w ith his mother, Mrs. Sadie Parrish. They attended the Class of 1947 reunion here. MR. AND MRS. WALTER McCLAIN, Mark and Bill of Seattle visited overnight Thursday with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heard. They were enroute to Chi cago where Mr. McClain will take schooling for Pacific Northwest Bell. Y I n Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gorger at their SOth Wedding Anni versary reception. David had been visiting her and taking iwimmlnK lessons. Lisa stayed there while her parents attended the Square Dance Festival. This completed the first section of the Collins' vaca tion. AT Mac HI Reunion Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Hughes attended her class reunion at Mllton-Freewater last weekend. Also attending from here were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hager.
