On April 28, Condon won 0-4, with Nancy Ashurst play ing first singles for lone and Cathy Cannon is the sec ond singles position. The girls doubles consisted of Christina Lindstrom andCln di Martin-first doubles; and Cheri Carlson and Mary Mc EUiroH, second doubles. The same girls played when lone hosted Condon on May 3. Nancy Ashurst was the only lone victor, winning her sets 6-3; 6-0. The final match score was!oiie-l;Con-don-3. SPECIAL Memtiers of the lone High School Tennis Team, accom panied by Miss Sarah Andrew, participated in the sub district tennis match in Pen dleton on May 5. Nancy Ashurst won her first match 2-0 in singles against a LaGrande participant. Nan cy lost 0-2 in her second match. Cathy Cannon went down 0-2 in singles compe tition. Christina Lindstrom and Cindl Martin, doubles partners, were defeated 1-2 in their first match. In boys' singles, Herb Eks trom lost 1-2 and in doubles, Richard Hamlett and Clint Krebs were defeated 0-2. Of the 22 girls who competed, Miss Pettyjohn took first jilace In the "average" of the two days. former queens of the Ar lington Rodeo were Invi ted back to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the rodeo. Miss Pettyjohn, Mrs. MrCoin, and Mrs. Nancy Mil ler, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Pettyjohn, are all former queens. A parade ws held on May 6 followed by a luncheon attended by the former queens and visiting courts. lone Track On May Day Coaches Jerry Martin and Barb Talley took their lone Junior High Trackers to Ar lington on Friday, May 5, for the annual May Day track meet. Coack Martin expressed his views by saying "the kids did a fine job they really got out there and tried." The lone team placed seventh out of thirteen schools. The lone athletes placing in their events were: Todd Peterson, second In the boys' cross country; Skye Krebs, fourth in the 440;- Natalie Tews, fifth in the girls' 50 yd dash; Billy Lindstrom, third in the 50 yd. dash; bob Gates, fourth in the 100 yd. dash; LeRoy Pea, third in the 880; and Catherine McElligott, second in the girls' 220 yd. dash. The lone girls, 12 and un der, placed first in the 220 yd. relay. The boys, 12 and under, placed third in the 220 yd. relay. The girls over 12 placed fifth in the 440 yd. relay, while the boys over 12 placed fourth in the same event. In the mixed relay, the lone tracksters placed second. Heppner Wins Py Steve Rhea Keppner, now holding a firm second place position, Is right on the heels of the confer ence west leaders, Sherman, after taking a pair of games from Maupin May 4, 10-2, and 4-3. In the first game, Heppner saw 10 hits turn into 10 runs, on three errors, while fresh man pitcher Jerry Gentry gave up two runs on four hits and two errors. Jeff Marshall led the hitters with a 3-4 effort; a home run and a double pushing across five base runners. DaleHed man and John Boyer also helped in the cause. Dale smashed a deep left field hit for a home run and John rapped out three singles. The freshman hurler Gentry fanned nine and walked only two. The second game saw Hep pner outlasting the Redsides in a five inning game with a 4-3 win. Marshall again hammered in a home run in the bottom of the second, but Wasco County came back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Steve Rhea hit a triple, sending two runs home to lead. Mustangs Vs. Maupin By Greg Green Starting with a two run homer by Steve Rhea in the first inning, Heppner High glovemen went on to reel in the Maupin Redsides 11-5 at Maupin May 2. Steve Rhea finished the game with a .500 batting av erage, bringing his BA for the year to .472. Rhea also was put down for 7 RBI's and was the winning pitcher. Other top hitters were Dale Hedman, 3-4,andGregGreen, 2-4. Heppner pitchers only allowed Maupin seven hits to their nine. Pirates Best lone Cards The Riverside Pirates of Boardman came up with 15 runs in their shut out of the lone Cardinals on May 5. The Pirates scored, In all but 2 innings, on 8 hits and 12 Cardinal errors. Even though the Cards had 2 hits, one a piece for Ed Winkelman and Dick Snider, they failed to score against the Pirates. The winning pitcher was Pon Baker with Partlow hand ling the behind-the -plate du ties. Snider was on the mound through 5 innings for the Cardinals with Kent Gut ierrez coming in on relief. This put Riverside In the lead for the Dig Sky Fast baseball championship for a few days. In the flrsf game Ron Bak er was the winning pitcher, fanning eight with one walk. Helix pitcher Pod Pahl fan ned 12 with four bases on bulls. Pahl drove In the Grizzlies' only run with a single. Charlie Ober hit two more singles for Helix. Rick Partlow had a double and Tony Uarnhart a RUI single for Riverside. In the second game, River side got a run in the last Inning to trail by two runs. They then put runners on se cond and third, but couldn't get them home. Pahl hit a double and vvade M tiller added a pair oi singles to lead Helix. Riverside's 15-0 win over lone Fri. gave them a 5-1 for the season and tying them for first place In the league with Helix, who wona double header with Weston. They were to have a playolf at Echo Wed. to determine the winner of the championship. Heppner JV's Earn Win Heppner J V Diamond men came from a 4-1 deficit to beat Pilot Rock' s Junior Var sity 10-7 May 1. Steve Peck hit a double and knocked in three runs. Jerry Gentry ended with a high bat ting average of .750 and was the winning pitcher. Gentry walked ten men, but only allowed two hits. This brings the baby Mustangs to a 2-1 season record.
