Dennis McKay attended the Oregon Education Asso ciation rep council in Port land at the Sheraton Hotel, on April 27, thru April 29. BRYCE KEENE was sur prised with a potluck birth day dinner at his home on April 23. Those present for the event were Mrs. Keene, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvor zell, Mr. and Mrs. Berl Alters, and Mary Lindsay. Pinochle was played b the guests following dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Errett Hum mell, Beaverton, were guests of the John Eubank' s last weekend. Mr. Hummell is a former lone Schools principal. The St. William's Altar So ciety will meet this even ing, May 4, at 8 p.m. in the church basement. M-s. Joe Engelman is a patient at St. Anthony's Hospital, Room 302, Pen dleton undergoing tests and observations. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mich aelsen, Jr., Odessa, were weekend guests of her sis ter, Mrs. Ray Heinbigner. Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Myers, Lincoln City, were April 22 23 guests of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree. MR. & MRS. HAROLD SHERER and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sherer traveled to Redmond, on April 30, to visit Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Barnhart and girls. Join ing them were Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Ripka and Gary of Salem. juanita Melena Passes Juanita Melena, along-time lone resident, passed away on Apr. 27 in Ontario, fol lowing a lengthy illness. Mrs. Melena, born in Eu gene on Sept. 18, 1895, came to lone in 1913. She mar ried the late Warner Riet mann in lone in 1918. They built the home where the Henry Krebs family now re sides. He died in 1930. She married William E. Me lena in Lewiston, Idaho, in 1951. They continued to live in the Ione-Heppner area un til 19G8, when they moved to Ontario. Mr. Melena died in 1969. Mrs. Melena was an active member of the lone United Church of Christ and of the Eastern Star. She was also a former school teacher. Funeral services were con ducted on May 1 in Folsoms Funeral Chapel, Pendleton, with the Rev. William Ar thur, united Church ofChrist in lone, officiating. Vault interment was in Olney Ce metery, Pendleton. Casket bearers were Bob Rietmann, Bill Rietmann, Wayne Rietmann, Gene Riet mann, Harold Rietmann, and Don Bristow. Mrs. Melena is survived by stepsons, Melvin Melena, On tario; Joseph Melena, Palo Alto, Calif.; Gerald Melena, Scoopboy, Mont.; Leonard Melena, Pullman, Wash. Pex ford Melena, Sheldon.Wash.; Charles Melena, Minnea polis; 15 step-grandchildren; 15 step-great grandchild ren; plus numerous nieces and'nephews in the lone area. ..... ... xtcn5i0n . ....... From 70 to 80 dancers filled the lone Legion Hal! with lively step ping and gay music Dane ers came from the Hermis ton Square Knots club and Pendleton Rockets to dance with the lone group. Callers for the evening were Darreli WilsonandDar rell James of lone. JimDrls coll of Heppner, Henry Hicks of Hermiston and Phil Jami son of Pendleton. Hounding out the lively evening were door prizes, spring decora tions and lone's usual deli cious spread of food. The Grand Squares have a big night coming up Sat.. May 6. That is the night of their annual anniversary dance at the Willows Grange hall in lone. Visitors are expected to join the fun from several clubs. The public is always invited. Dancing will begin at 8:00 p.m. ESA Has Sprinq Banquet Thel's Cafe was the sett ing of the Beta Omega Chap ter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha's annual spring banquet on Apr. 29. A lobster and steak din ner was enjoyed by the mem bers and their husbands. Highlighting the evening was the chapter's presen tation of a gift to outgoing president, Mrs. Jerry Mar tin. Mrs. Joel Engelman, president-elect, presented the gift for a "job well done" on behalf of the chapter. Those present for the oc casion were: Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Martin, Mrs. Joel Engelman, Mr. and Mrs. Del LaRue, Mr. and Mrs. Art Lindstrom, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McKay, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Doherty. A.E. Loyd of La Grande; and M:s. Mt.ry Val entine of Santa Rosa are great grandmothers. Eighth Grade Students to Go On Fossil Trip Forty-three 8th grade stu dents from the Heppner Ele mentary School have been knowledgeably coached by their teacher, Inez Meador, for their trip to the John Day Fossil beds. The one day field trip will have Mike Utoff of OMSI as a guide. Students will leave by bus at 7 a.m. on May 11. Each student is to take a sack lunch. Mrs Meador, in her own is able to identify the right various formations seen in that area and give the his tory of how they were formed. THE NEW MIND of Hills dale Community Church, Portland, presented a con temporary folk musical at the lone ' United Church of Christ on April 30. "Na tural High," a folk musical about God s Son. was com posed by Ralph Carmicluel and Kurt Kaiser. The group was formed ori ginally in 1968 as a small group of high school and col lege students who decided they wanted to sing contem porary music in the religious idiom. The group grew un til presently there are forty members (26 tour members) They presented another folk musical, "Tell It Like It is", in the Spring of 1970 and quickly took to "Na tural High" as soon as It was released. lone PTA to Honor Retirees Tne lone PTA will hM a reception on Tiurs., May 11, at 8 p.m., honoring those people who will be retiring at the end of the present academic year. They include Mrs. Franklin Ely, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Matthews, and Mrs. Ida Co'.ennn. Lynn Killpack's shop sut dents will have a display in the gymiasium showing the work they have completed throughout the year. John Rietmann, Mark Rietmann, Ed Winkelman, Dick Snider, and Clint Krebs will give short talks on their accom plishments during the year. Spray Pupils to Canada Spray High School Jrs. and Srs. spent Thurs., Fri., Sat. and Sun. on a trip to Cana da. This was their Annual Senior Sneak and all enjoyed the beautiful scenery and many other sights. They visited China Town and Gas Town. They shopped bowl ed, played miniature golf and just enjoyed a great trip. Chaperones were Mr and Mrs. Harley Newland. The seniors were kind and incit ed the one Jr. The Spray Grange had a very nice turnout Sun. Apr. 30. They had lots of things to sell and many eager cus tomers. They were able to contribute $100 to go for eme rgency equipment. Tom Troxell is home on leave visiting his family in Spray, until the 14th. Ray and Marie Britt are the proad grand parents of a new baby girl born Sun. in Hermiston to Mr. and Mrs. Gentry of Heppner. A Great Art Show There wis a wide variety of art projects o.i display last Tuesday night at the Art Show. Two walls were lined with free-hand paint ings by the grade schoolboys and girls. The Art students from the two schools displayed the use of miny medium.; with many opportunities of self expres sion. Color charts: the color w.ieels, intensity charts of brightness and dullness of color, linht chart showing dark to light of one parti cular color. Sculptures from tooth pick f orms to clay.
