Biology Students Visit Coast
Sixteen exhausted biology
enthusiasts returned home,
April 1G, after spending four
active and interesting days
on the 1972 Coast trip. The
group comprised of 13 Hep
pner High School students,
Steve Brownfield, Biology In
structor, Mona Marsiiall and
Mr. and Mrs. O W Cuts
forth, left Heppner early
Thurs. morning. Traveling
through central Oregon and
Eugene, the group arrived
at Cape Perpetua late in the
afternoon. After exploring
the beach and rocks for a
short while, camp was set up
in Neptune State Park,
not then opened for the camp
ing season.
Park officials visited the
camp the following morning
and opened the park for fu
ture visitors.
Friday found the group sit
ting at the edge of Devil's
Churn, romping up beaches,
and a two iiour search for
the proposed campsite. De
vil's Lake State Park was
eventually located and dinner
was enjoyed in Lincoln City.
Early Sat. morning, boys
sleeping in two tents were
awakened by a rush of water
through their temporary
housing. Over a ' inch of
water covered the flours of
the tents, due to an unex
pected rain storm
Attempts were made at
crabbing Sat.; but to noavall.
Cape Meareswas selected as
the final campsite, but due
to the separation of the three
vehicles and complications,
the caravan finally came to
rest at Cape Look-out.
After unsuccessful clam
ming in the mud-flats of Ne
tarts Bay on Sun. morning,
camp was broken, and a weary
group headed for Heppner,
making various stops on the
journey home.
