Esther Taskerud. formjr director of Extension Home Economics, just happend to be in the area and came by to greet old friends, nuch to the delight of the many who had known her. Retired now, Miss Taskerud has many interests including work with handicapped children. Andy Landiorce. guest speaker renewed freindships with many present. One well remembered acquaintance, Barb Witherrite. confessed she had been in Andy's first 4-H club when he was a young agent in Wallowa County. Speaking of "Family recrea tion" Andy revealed an un derstanding of youth and fam ily today that touched the hearts of all. Mr. and M.S. Otto Steinke of Arlington visited Sun. af ternoon at the home of Stein ke s sister, Mrs. Ralph Ear-wood. R-Cfub sponsors fashion show About 100 guests were pre sent at the Mother and Daugh ter Tea held Wed. of last week at the Riverside High School commons. The affair was sponsored by the "R" Club, whose members are a combination of the Pep Club and the GAA. Linda Fre derickson, president, and Joni Tiller, secretary, were in charge. Theme of the even ing was "Little Girl Memor ies." Gracie Hixson was de corations chairman. Entertainment included dif ferent short skits by club members and a fashion show of clothes made in the scho ol's Home Economics class. Kitty Hixson poured cof fee, Debbie Christiansen served the tea, and Vickie Gayrnan was at the punch bowl. OregonSmall Schools Meet at Boardman The Oregon Small Schools Program sponsored a work shop at Riverside High Scho ol Mon. with 190 teachers attending from Umatilla, Morrow, Gilliam and Wheel er counties. The workshop was directed toward indivi dualized instruction. Don Miller of the Oregon State Board of Education, Sa lern, is director of the Small Schools Program and during the afternoon session he pre sented a slide tape on instruc tion. The program itself was a vi deo tape on individual instruc tions by Jim Hargis of Ore gon Stae University, who is consultant with the Stae Board of Education. A panel of administrators fielded questions from the teachers and a pre-assess-ment questionnaire was con ducted by each school staff present. Later in the afternoon scho ol groups met to discuss and to document goals for their own individual schools. Mr. ami Mrs. Alex John son represented the many In dian friends of Extension at the event. Mrs. Johnson will be working with Vista on the Umatilla Reservation. She is a gentle and beau tiful person, very concerned that the ImiianCulture tie pre served and appreciated. Dr. Ann Litchfield, Assis tant Director of Extension, speaking on the services ami helps available at state level to counties told the women that she wanted sincerely to know them, their needs and interests in order to develop a dynamic educational pro gram. She mentioned the ex citement and challenge of liv ing in Morrow County at the time of many new develop ments. Denver Grigshy, Boeing, shared development plans ami progress with the group, bringing chuckles from the group at the mention of the test plot using Portland gar bage. Approximately 93 wonnn attended the event. He wili be assigned to NPTU' for a 40 month tour of shore duty as an in structor for Surface designat ed nuclear personnel. He will not have an address in Idaho Falls until after May 31st as he has a little vacation time coming. He planned to stop in Heppner to see his friends. Mrs. Roy lull was elect ed president of the Kurd mm Garden Club at their iiueting Mon. night of last week at the homo of Mrs. Frank Marlow, Mrs. Walter Haves Is vice-president, Mrs. Marlow, secretary; and Mrs. Ralph Earwood. treasurer. Mrs. lull opened the meet ing by reading "Just To Please Father ", taken from Our Daily Bread. Roll call was answered by naming a favorite bulb. The club has purchased a Crimson King maple tree to be planted in the yard at the Biardman Community Church Arbor Day. Apr. 28. More plans were discussed to put a memorial to Sam Boardman in the city park. The morning of the 21st will be devoted to testimony b the State Game Com mission. The hearing will be tn Room 103 of the State Capitol at 9:00 a.m. Green has been In contact with Rep. Martin on the pro blem due to the numerous complaints he has received caused by a federal order banning the use of poison in predator control. Green said that John Mc Kean, Direc'.jr of the Game Commission, will review his department's proposal on a State Predator Program to replace the program wnicn for me rely had been operated b the U.S. Department of the Interior. Green is advocating a state wide program to help relieve cattle and sheep ranchers of heavy losses due to preda tors. Green said he will prepare a full report on the Game Commission's proposal fol lowing the April 21 hearing for those interested.
