The students are concerned and are asking residents to pirticipate in an effort to do something about collection of these articles for recycling. Students suggest that drop stations for the articles be placed at local grocery stores or other conveient places. Some civic group must as sume the responsibility for taking collected articles to a recycling station. Students are willing to help in this undertaking. Residents should prepare articles to be recycled as follows: Cans - rinse, re move both ends, place them inside can and flatten, place in heavy paper bags. Newspapers - tie in bun dles. Cardboard Boxes and similar cardboard articles flatten and tie in bundles. Glass - rinse bottles, remove all metal, plastic and paper. Collect separately from cans. Sort your recydables from other wastes (Potato peel ings, etc. can be made into a compost pile to add to your garden soil). These are the recommen Candi Mansfield, Sharon Pea body, and Barbara McCarl. After participating in an at tempt to do somathing about recycling. They say "If you care about your environment, please participate". FOOTNOTES By Birdine Tullis Our stuclentsare really con cerned about recycling and all phases of protecting their environment. Homemakers also have many requests for informa tion on where they can de posit bottles, can and papers. If studentsandhomemaKers are this concerned - can't we do something about it? Support this effort and let it be known that you too will cooperate. Do Heppner Homes Fit? On Thursday a group of students toured Heppner to take pictures and to take note of the different types of ar chitecture. They tried to make some conclusions on the types of architecture as to whether it was suitable for its function, the climate, lo cation, building materials and methods of construction. They discussed what was good and what was bad. They stu died homes as they fit into their surroundings. Students taking this En vironmental Awareness week tour were Barbara Allstott, Teresa Hughes, Kelley Wolff, Susan Wilson, Peggy Taylor, Dianne M-:Lachlan, Cindy Rogers, Ed Strahm and Kirk Robinson. Students confirm ed this fact at the meeting, March 29 at BMTC when a group of students, resource people, Extension and BMCC personnel met to evaluate the World of Work Career Day held there recently. Student representatives from fourteen high schools, all who had participated in the recent session, had strong feelings about the value of the day. They were unani mous in asking for similar workshops. Many sugges tions for making it more worthwhile were offered. As a result, all high school age youth will be invited to next year's siminar tobegiv en early in March. A Sat urday session was preferred bv students. CLEAN LP PAYS OFF The group of students who volunteered to clean up during the Environmental Aware ness week had a taste of bureaucracy at work. They learned that picking up litter along the highway must be preceded by the is suance of a permit three days prior. They learned the dump is only ojen at cer tain times. All was not lost. They took three pickup loads from the Fairgrounds to the dump. The clean-up session was parti cularly rewarding to Mike Doherty who found a $10. bill. ,$ ...J,;.",ir"-"- - - J tf. ..'
