lone Carnival by LINDA MCKAY Mrs. Herbert Peterson, chairman of th loti Car nival commute, reported that proceeds for the Sunday night event er tar above xpectatlons. She wishes fo thank community mem bers, parents, students and teachers who participated In making It a very sue cessful project. Special gratitude is extendi to the lone-Heppner merchants, who donated prizes. This year, Interested grade school boys have had the opportunity to learn the ba sirs of basketball. Del Laftue, teacher and coach at lone HH;h School, has devoted his Saturday morn ings, since basketball season began, to approximately thirty youngsters, grades 1-5, In order to teach them the basic fundamentals. The boys have worked on techniques such as passing, dribbling, shooting, and some defense. The enthusiastic boys then have a chance to compete with each other during the half-time periods of the high school's home games. VALENTINE TARTY A partial afternoon of en joyment was seen at lone grade School, February 14, at which time the annual Valentine's parties took place. Mothers of the stu dents in the individual class es planned the activities and refreshments. In the first grade room was a decorated table holding cookies and refreshments. The m 'tliers with" Mrs". Bob Rietmann is first grade teach Mrs. Lindsay Klncald's second graders plaved a Valentine Bingo g a me winners being: Anita Palmer, Tammy Holtz, Mary Klncaid, Dian Morter. Chris Rietmann and Craig Gutierrez. Mrs. Mardine Patton served as chairman. Mrs. Del LaRue, chairman of the third grade party, took the 22 students to the gym where thev plaved an "ORANGE PASS GAME"', "holding the balloon on a spoon," and "a break the bal loon on the foof'game. The youngsters then . opened Valentines and ate decorat ed cookies and cupcakes for refreshments, provided by the mothers. Mrs. Jerry Martin is the third grade teacher. Mrs. H.R. Kerbs entertain ed the fourth grade class with a melodrama: "The Villian," "The Hero," and "The Heroine." Stunts and games were also played by Mrs. Franklin Ely's class. Bingo, opening valentines, and refreshments occupied Mr. James Anderson's fifth grade students. Mrs. Charles Doherty served as chairman for this group. MOVING?? The students of Mr. Clifford Williams presented a girt to the mothers who hosted the party. LEARNS OF DEATH Word was received by Mrs Leo Crabteec concerning the recent death of Stella O'Meara, a former lone resident. Mrs. CM ears as residing In the Lincoln Nursing Hospital, Davenport, Washington, at the time of her death. Funeral servic es were conducted on Feb. 1 S at Harrington, Washington. Cards may be sent to Mr, and Mrs, Francis Rieth, Box 91, Harrington. Washington. 91134. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Collins were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Beck and Michelle. The Collins' are Mrs. Beck's parents. Attending the Walla Walla concert series which featured the Los Angeles Brass En semble, on Thurs. Feb. 10, were Mr. and Mrs. Darrell James, Mr. and Mrs. Fre drick Martin, and Mr. and Mrs. John Maatta. On Feb. 5, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hams visited their daughter, Leslie, who Is a patient at the Falrview Hospital in Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Berl Akers attended the Grange meeting at Olex on Feb. 12. Also, 12 memters of Willow's Grange attended the visitation program of the Lexington Grange on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Thor ton, Astoria, and De niece Matthew, Echo, were weekend guests of Mr. and M.-s. M.ke Matthews. ATTENDED WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. Charles Doherty attended the Feb. 12 wedding of his sister Helen Doherty and William McLaughlin. The vows were exchanged In the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Stayton. Mr. Doherty escort ed his sister to the altar, and gave her in marriage. Mrs. Doherty served the bridal cake at the reception and Joan Marie, the Doherty s daughter, served the groom's cake. The Doherty" s other two children, Margaret Ann and Donny, stayed with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Bradshaw, Albany. The Doherts returned to lone on Sunday. Chris Llndstrom and Cindy Ekstrom attended the recent Rainbow installation of Leslie Hulden of the Arlington As sembly.
