Frank AmlerMWt, Mr. Mr. and Mr. Clint Meyuarrle. and Mr, and Mr. Harry ODonnell u-turned lat week from a de lightful look about central and southern Mexico lucky folk! Marie McQuarrie ha kindly i:lven u some of her Iniprea Ions of some of the thine they aw which especially Interested her. Ti.cse couples took an Amer j lean Express tour and were gone, two week and two days. They flew to Mexico City, toured by bus for 1325 mile, and had their final visit at the coastal resort of Acapuleo. Marie wa Impressed with the great size of the capital city and also with Guadalajara, a second large city to the west of Mexico City. She said Acapuleo on the west coast, which has grown so fast recently, Is a lovely tourist spot where she could easily have stayed even longer than the two extra day they spent there. Marie found Mexico an excit ing place of some striking con trasts. It has very wealthy peo ple with huge estates and many very pwr who live In little adobe huts. The lot of the poor is Improving however, under the present socialist regime. The Heppner party appreciated the fine guide their tour provided. This man believes in the social ist reforms and ltoks for more improvements for Mexico's poor. He, incidentally, had attended Spokane's Gonzaga University. He enlightened the tourists over a loud speaker as they drove about in the air-conditioned bus. She enjoyed the street ven dors and learned to haggle over prices. Her advice is to first of fer Just one half of what they ask then If they refuse, start up very slowly, and one finds that the final price Is consid erably below the first price ask ed. The tourists found the eleva tions tiring at first. Mexico City Is around 7,000 feet above sea level, and other places they vis ited were as high as 10,000 feet. Among other impressions Mar ie related were the experiences of attending a great ballet per formance in Mexico City's vast Opera house, of going Into sev eral great cathedrals, and of vis iting at Taxco, where there are marvelous gardens and terrific crafts shops. One of the church es they visited was the Church of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The tour group stayed briefly in nn ancient Aztec palace which had secret passage ways in which the Aztec people hid from the Spanish conquerors a- bout 510 years ago. They saw the great group of Aztec pyra mids, precision built long ago.
