Sal - Ins 7.02 100.79, I13.S1 A Visit To The John Leachs' 'Sleepy Hollow' Is A Must Unbelievable in the midst of Portland's urban sprawl is Slee py Hollow, a five acre forest garden on the banks of John son Creek. John and Lilla Leach are the heart of Sleepy Hollow. John, a 90-year old gentleman full of stories and humor guided mem bers of lone Garden Club and guests on a delightful tour of the cottage and its treasury of furnishings and over the miles of trails through gardens and forests of plants collected dur ing the Leaches many years of world travel. The unusual floor of their cottage is wide planks of oak with walnut disks inlaid over the nails, all beautifully fin ished. In the parlor a solid rose wood square grand piano, which came to Oregon around Cape Horn, is only one of many it ems or historical as well as aesthetic interest. Beside the piano is a desk made from a melodeon belonging at one time to Mr. Jacob Johnson of Oregon's earliest days, for whom Johnson Crock is named. Mrs. Leach, at one time a botany teacher, now confined to a wheel chair sits in a pleasant room with a large window look ing out on what John calls the welfare center for hundreds of birds, On the wide window sill catching the light is beautiful ly arranged a display of Lilla's one hundred piece collection of amber glassware: pitchers, cake plates, vases, bowls, cups, and several "golden Slippers" of different designs. Here and there are fine art icles of metal artwork done by Mr. Leach: candlesticks, tea warniing table, plates, trays and many other items. The mile long trail through Sleepy Hollow's five acres cross es Johnson Creek twice, once over a suspension bridge and later back across stepping stones in a most picturesque pool setting. Arcoss the suspen sion bridge from the cottage Mr. Leach ha.s created a unique pic nic site with stone fireplace, concrete patio, table and chairs cut from large tree stumps. Here uie tour took time to enjoy a H'tluck luncheon. Hundreds of varieties of ground covers have been estab lished along the trails among trees and shrubs from many lands. Numerous varieties of na tive iris were in bloom and pet als from the interesting dove tree, imj.Krt from the Orient, were falling. Special interest spots are scat tered along tho trail such as a rustic cabin with a colorful ter razzo floor its dominating fea ture. The design is a fruit tree with the names John and Lilla inlaid ra-side its trunk. All other lone PTA Tonight Salutes the 4-H'ers IONK The lone PTA meet ing tonight will u all out for 111. Mr. and Mrs. Line Millman were visitors in Baker over the weekend to atiend their son's I wedding reception Saturday. Sunday they visited with Mr. features of the cabin are an tique or unique such as a chair made from a whale vertebrae or the eight inch long cut at both ends by beaver. The stump which served as an altar for the outdoor wedding of the Leaches, ha.s been moved to a special spot along the trail. The trail winds through both formal and informal collections such as the rose trail, the physic trail, rhododendron garden, a Japan ese garden, a fountain garden, dogwood and many others. Yet one section has been left in its natural state. Here is the re mains of an old still that did illegal business during prohib ition. Of prime Interest were the blooms of ginger plants and the large tricolor beech which forms a magnificent canopy for one of the cottage terraces. It Isn't too soon to start plan ning toward the next tour of Sleepy Hollow. Mr. Leach especially enjoys seeing those with whom he was acquainted during the years he lived on a ranch on Blackhorse near Lexington. Former members of lone Gar den Club, Nadine Johnson, Sa lem and June Christopherson, Donald, residents of Heppner ar ea, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gem moll ,Salem, joined those who drove from Morrow County for the tour: Mary Doherty, Norma Rea, Leila Palmer, Laura Holtz, Loree Hubbard, Delta Huber, Geneva Palmer.
