1 About 3 real fun things hap
peqpa to us last weekend. We
" took the camper to this news
1 paper workshop at Gearhart so
' we could bring back some of
" the Morrow County History
' . DOOKS.
I was walking In front of the
publishers while Charlie went
insiue. inis gai arove up check -'
ing thd building number with
a paper in her hand. I asked if
she wanted Binfords and Mort
Yes ...so then we got to talk
ing. Her husband writes books
, and she was to pick him up
' there,, They were from Lynwood
. ouui niiu oeiiy junes: wnen sne
learned we had lived at Cash
mere, Wn, she asked if we knew
Dr. Tom McGranahans. Sure
enough ... I'd worked with
Buelah (Mrs. McGranahan) in
League of Washington Voters
and young Tom had been our
paper boy for the Wenatchee
i Daily World. It seemed that Bet-
. ,ty's mother and Tom's mother
, had planned for them to marry
but they didn't. Then to cap it
off she said they were going
to a newspaper meeting at Gear
.,, hart . . . We enjoyed sitting with
; them at the dinner Friday eve
, ning.
We went a day early to go to
M Ilwaco to see if Charlie could
locate a long lost friend from
the old Normal days at La
uranae. ino iuck. no Morton
Hogile in the directory and a
few inquiries yielded no one
who knew him. When we went
to dinner, we met Gene and Kay
' Trumbull who live in Boardman.
it was me nrsi time i a seen
Kay since we moved to Hepp
ner. She graduated from Mac
Hi the same year our son did.
So we enjoyed that visit.
Then we went on down to
Gearhart, Charlie checked the
' phone directory and there was

be the one we were looking for
and what a warm evening we
had in front of their cozy fire
place. We froze the rest of the
time we were at the beach. Mort
was the same Norwegian story
teller and brought us up to date
with what all he'd done since
1933 when we last saw him . . .
like fishing on the Bering Sea,
a stint in the Coast Guard, man
aging Tongue Point, hunting
ana fishing. He's now retired
from Tongue Point and works
as dispatcher at the Seaside Pn
lice Station. We don't intend to
lose track of Mort and his
charming wife, Sylvia, again.
we nope tneya come up to vis
it us.
