Duo-Church Bible School is Success Tho United Methodist and Hope Lutheran churches have completed their cooperative Dully Vacation Bible School held from June 7 to June 11. The closing program was held last Friday evening at the Luther an Church with all students participating. There was a good turnout for the program. The children opened with a round, Shalam. The children of the Nursery, Kindergarten and First and Second grade sang Jesus Wants Me for a Sun Beam. The Kindergarten sang Jesus Loves Mo and the First Second grade sang We Pray for Each Other. were Beverly Phegley and Wen-Co-leaders of the Nursery dy rhegley assisted by Mrs. Danny McBrlde and Tonl Toll They had 11 youngsters. Mrs. Len Ray Schwa rz was the lead teacher In the Kinder garten assisted by Lynn Hague wood, Georginia McDaniels and LandM Glrrard. There were 15 student enrolled in the Kinder garten. Mrs. Dexter Milt's was the lead teacher for the First and Second graders. Assisting were Mrs. Ladd Dick. Lisa McCabe and Terrl Pettyjohn. The 3rd-4th grade group re cited their memory work and sang "I'll Be A Cowboy". Donna Herman reviewed the work cov ered in the week's sessions. They were taught by Mrs. Or val Matheny, Mrs. Jerry Myers and Debbie McLeod. They had 18 students. The 5th -6th grade students sang Dear Lord and five from their group gave a review of each day's activities. Mrs. Ken When Do They Meet? Their part in the program In cluded skits on King David. Mrs. Richard Curtis and Craig Cutting sang solo parts with them In "Hallowed Be thy Name". The entire group sang Give Me Oil in My Lamp and How Did Muses Cross the Red Sea. Then a singing tribute to their parents, 'We Love You Parents". Mrs. Curtis and Krlstl Hague wood worked together as music teachers. Mrs. Otillia Hunt and Mrs. Cutting prepared the daily snacks along with Ida Farra who helped Friday evening. Mrs. Bruce Griffith was dir ector for the school. Each student was presented with a certificate. Pastor Mensch gave the closing prayer. Students and their guests en joyed the display of handwork and a social hour in the base ment following the program. Olympics have been the theme for this month. Dens will play games and have contests. The winning den gets free milk shakes. Sharon Harrison's Den won the Attendance banner at the May Pack meeting. This blue and gold banner was made by Mrs. Dick Robison and Mrs. Len Ray Schwarz. Den 4 mothers. The boys displayed the crafts they had made during the month. There were traffic safe ty reflectors, bird houses and house signs. Bob Cat Badges Bob Cat badges were present ed to Chris Culp, Craig Howard and Kenny Howard. Wolf Badges Wolf badges went to William McCall and William Huston. Receiving Bear Badges were Steve Marlatt, Terry Toll, Kirk Sager and Ron Schwarz. Two 10 year olds inducted in to Webelos were Terry Toll and Steve Marlatt. Leonard Toll is the Webelos leader and Ralph Marlatt is his new assistant. Webelos activity awards were presented. Craig Robison earned his Citizen and Sportsman awards and Troy Simmons his Artist and Sportsman awards. Pat Jensen's little boy won the cake. A Pack Flag, blue and gold nylon flag with the HOSPITAL NEWS Fourteen patients were admit ted to Pioneer Memorial Hospi tal during the weekend and af ter receiving medical care, were discharged. The American Legion Tost has given the den an Amer ican flag. Brethren-Methodist Churches Unite The annual conference of the Oregon-Idaho United Methodist Church wa3 held at Salem May 31-June 4. Conference began for Rev. Ed Cutting of Heppner on May 30 with a two-day meeting of the Board of Ministry of which he is a member; This Board deals with the admittance of persons into the ministry and their gen eral effectiveness throughout the years. Mrs. W. W. Weatherford rep resented Heppner United Meth odist Church as a lay delegate and Mrs. Cutting attended as a visitor. The conference was structur ed on the small group process as the 400 delegates were div ided into 40 groups of 10 each. Out of the deliberations of the small groups, came goals and suggestions for making the church more effective, both lo cally and world-wide. A highlight of the Conference was the uniting of the former Drppron Evangelical United Brethren Church and the former Methodist Church into one or ganization. The Conference concluded with the Service of Ordination in which several new ministers were ordained into full connec tion. Bishop Sparks announced the location each United Meth odist minister was to serve in Oregon and Idaho for the next year. Rev. Cutting was re-appointed to Heppner. The tour started In the morn ing with the first stop at the Kon Turner ranch to see his ir rigated crop of beans and some of the problems with water in filtration on the Ritzville soils. Ken pointed out the importance of pre-lrrigation to fill the sou profile prior to the growing sea son. From there the group went to the Nelson Brothers rancn on the Baseline Road where Don Rydrych from the Pendleton Ex periment Station has establish ed a weed control demonstration plot. Most of the new weed con trol chemicals on the market are being evaluated in this plot. Wheat yields and weed control results will be publish ed this fall and will be avail able for erowers use.
