Monday's balmy weather was perfect for the track and field events for which Heppner host ed the girls' track teams from FoFssil, Helix, lone and Pilot Rock. Helix High School led all five teams with 77 points taking 1st place in the mile, 440 yd. run, 100 yd. dash, 880 yd. run, high jump and long jump. Heppner High folowed Helix with 66 tallies; Fossil 3rd with 23 points; 4th went to Pilot Rock with 18 and lone totaled 6 points for 5th place. Jr. High Compete in Apriil Track Events April track meets for the Heppner Grade School Girls' Track Team included a second place slot at the Pendleton Track Meet on April 21 and a fourth place at the Piilot Rock Girls' Invitational on April 29. Pendleton Donna Raymond led the Hepp ner Girls with the only first place taken by Heppner as they competed with pencneton ana sc. Joseph Jr. High teams on April 21. HHS Girls Track Compete In April Tri Meets Cab Scouts Den 3 met at Jo Simmons' home on May 3. We sawed boards to make signs. We played games and had fun. Steven Marlatt brought treats. Steven Marlatt, reporter April was an active month for the Heppner High School Girls Track team as they travelled to La Grande, Pendleton and Pilot Rock, placing 12th, 2nd and 4th in the respective meets. La Grande The 1971 Eastern Oregon In vitational Girls' .Track and Field Meet held in La Grande on Ap ril 1-2-3 saw 23 schools compete with Heppner placing 12th. Joan Healy and Terry Petty john were the point-makers for Henoner brinEine home a 2nd and 4th place. Joan placed 2nd in the 220 Yard Dash with a time of 28.8, while Terry put the shot 28' 5" and 30' 4V4" for the fourth place slot. Pendleton Joan Healy paced the Hepp ner Girls at me -enaieion Track Meet on April 21, taking 1st in four events. Heppner scor ed 29 total points to take sec ond place with Pendleton first and St. Joseph third. Joan's firsts were in the 220 Yard Dash (29.4), 100 Yard Dash (12.9), High Jump (4'2"), Long Jump (13'4"). Aiding in the 1st place scoring were Diana Raymond with a first in the 440 Yard Run (1:20.2), and Sher- yl Massey first in the Shotput (29'2"). Pilot Rock Heppner came home in 4th place from the Pilot Rock Girls' Invitational on April 29. Along with Heppner, the schools com peting were Athena, Helix, Her Brenda Kerns 4'2". Broadjump 4th. 14'7". Discus Brenda Kerns, 4th, 78'8". Golfers Throng Course Enjoy Breakfast- Ed Hiemstra, president of the Willow Creek Country Club said the turnout was good for the Opening Breakfast Sunday mor ning. There were 31 in attend ance for the pre-golf session of hot cakes, bacon and eggs serv ed by chefs, Harold Kerr, Dale Boner, Ron Riley, Bob Clough and Mr. Hiemstra. In the golf tournament that followed Francis Doherty went home with three prizes. He won first for closest to the pin, least number (26) of putts for 18 holes and had low net 52. Dennis Martin made the long est drive and Lowell Gribble had low gross. This Sunday Heppner mem bers will go to Condon for a Play Day with the Condon Club. Tee-off time is 9 a.m. Condon will serve lunch. The return day when Willow Creek will host Condon for a -play day is Aug. 15. Heppner has been invited to participate in the Gilliam Coun ty Jaycee Golf Tournament at Condon on June 5 and 6. Dead line date for registering is May SUSAN HEALY. This time in the 440 Relay. lone Band Concert Presented April 27 By EVA HAMLETT IONE The lone School Bands under the direction of Darrell James presented their "Pops Concert" on April 27. The con cert was in 6 parts, starting with the High School band, fol lowed by arrangements sung by the High School Mixed Chorus, with Kevin Gutierrez on the drums. The 3rd part was the Junior High Band, followed by the Combined Sixth Grade Band and Junior High Band. The High bchool Band performed again and the final number was the High School Mixed Chorus. The concert was enjoyed by all at tending, lone Is proud of these talented young people, and their director. Mr. and Mrs. Art Bailey spent Monday and Tuesday of last week in Portland on a business trip. Mr. Alters Home Berl Akers is home again, af ter spending some time in Port land, where he had major sur gery several weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wilson (Mary Nichols) of Galesbury, 111., are the proud parents of a 6 lb., 5 oz. son, born April 2, nd has been named Robert Lee. He joins a year old brother andi sister. Grandparents are Mrs. Thomas Wilson of Galesburg, 111., Thomas Wilson of Burbank, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nichols of lone. Great Grande parent is Archie Niichols of Lex ington. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nichols drove to Portland last Wednes-i day where Mrs. Nichols report- ed for a medical checkup.
