The local winner will compete In the state for honor of "Oregon Father of the Year . Scouts Wage War On Local Litter Frank W. Gentry Passes Frank W. Gentry died April L in a Portland hospital after a long illness. He was born in Heppner Oct. 12, 1905. and at tended school and resided here until 1943 when he moved to Portland where he has since lived. Mr. Gentry owned and oper ated Frank's Shoe Repair Shop in Tigard lor is years. He was married to Kathleen McDald on June 14 1927. Be sides his wife he leaves a son, Frank V. Gentry of Portland, a daughter, Joyce Quentel, Con cord, Calif., and 12 grandchild ren. "Get Involved" and "Save the Environment" have fast become national slogans In an effort to Inspire nationwide clean-up, Boy Scout Troop No. 6C1 wag ed a successful campaign on the local level against litter. Work Ing with 15 volunteer Scouts, Dan McBride, Troop Leader, or ganized a general clean-up of unsightly refuse within a 3-mile radius of the area. The crew began at the tennis court Sunday morning, April 3 and worked out to Three-mile, returned to the city limits and cleaned their way to the goi course. When the "bounty" was delivered to the dump, another eye-sore was discovered and rectified as the Scouts gathered debris which had blown out of vehicles hauling trash. Highway Cooperation One contributing factor to the success of the project was the fine cooperation given by the Highway Department. A truck and driver, men- at-work signs, flagmen and litter bags were furnished. Ed Yeoman made a special point to arrange his work days in order to drive truck for the boys. Mr. McBride expressed his satisfaction at the good turnout and the great job done by the boys. The eagerness and willing ness of Howard Green, Mike Smith, Mike Sweek, Raymond Smith, Steve Malcom, Kyle Buschke, Brian Boner, Bob Eck man, Allen Burkenblne, Dave Allstott, Mark Piper. Curtis Sweek, Mike Buschke. Kelly Sa ger and Bruce Young paid off in visible dividends. The environmental project was or the boys' own choosing and they plan to maintain the area as well as continue In oth er ways. Wall Creek Project May 14, 15 and 16 the TrooD plans to join 250 other Eastern Oregon Scouts on Wall Creek. The time will be devoted to the clean-up of the Steelhead spawning grounds. This worth while project found favor with the local Scouts as their troon stresses a "closeness to nature by using it and preserving it.
