"What our Flag Means to me", the subject of the Americanism content sponsored by the Amer ican Legion Auxiliary had wide participation in the lone Schools. Mrs. Gar Swan.son, chairman, took the theme and rules to the school. She receiv ed 100 cooperation from the teachers of the 7th, 8th and 9th grades who incorporated it into their daily assignments. Mrs. Dennis McKay, 9th grad teacher incorporated the assign ment to include outline work library and essay writing, In her English department and manu script typing for her typing class as she has the Freshmen for both English and typing. Mrs. John Wagenblast, 7th and 8th grade teacher, Incorpor ated library research, library fa cillty use, outlining, essay writ mg ana fcnglish language us age In her assignment of the essay in her classes. Both said they found the as signment beneficial. The prize money served as the primary motiviation but af ter the students got Into the as signment they found it worth while as a chance to express themselves patriotically. Winners Listed Clint Krebs was winner In the senior division. Junior division winners were Mike Warren 1st. Terry Taylor 2nd and Harvey Childers 3rd. Honorable mention went to Charlie McElligott, Mar ilyn Warren, Melanie Ball. Jan Ekstrom, Donna Flack and Mar- ci Llnnell. First place winners received 57.50, 2nd place $3.00 and cer tificates of merit went to those receiving Honorable Mention. The winning essavs in each of the two divisions will be en tered in the State Contest. Sen ior division 1st prize is $35 and 2nd prize $20. Junior division: 1st prize $30 and 2nd prize $15. The first place winners will be guests at the annual Amer ican Legion Birthday dinner on March 16 at 7 p.m. They Willi read their winning essays. I tr "v-ili" 1 i--"'ri ii-iiin 'it'-'nni fiV- w-- LEXINGTON A report on the various activities of the Rcbek h and Odd Fellow Lodges was given on Thursday night at the regular meeting of Holly by Mrs. Archie Munkers, who with Mrs. Altha Kirk of Hermlston, have been In Portland. The la dies went to the practice of the State Kebekah drill team and attended District number I con ventlon. Mrs. Munkers reported that the Eye Bank program of the lodges has raised $750,000 for the establishment of an en dowed chair in opthalmic re search at the Wilmer Institute of Johns Hopkins University. The Educational Foundation through its Revolving loan fund, helps students further their education. The loige has two active youth groups which embrace ages through 12-21 which Is the Junior Odd Fellows for boys and the Theta Rho Clubs, ages 10-21 for girls. The most publicized is the United Nations Youth Pilgrim- age which Is an expense paid trip for the student winning the yearly district essay contest. This is a trip to the U. N. to study the workings of the group and trips to Washington, D.C., and a trip across Canada one way. following the regular meeting refreshments were serv ed in St. Patrick's colors. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vocom and Mildred motored to Portland on Monday for a checkup on Mild reds arm, who recently under went major surgery at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, The Amicitia Club met at the home of Mrs. Gene Cole in Hcppner. Thohe present were Mrs. O. W. Cutsforth, Mrs. Stan ley Cox, Mrs. Riley Munkers, Mrs. Bob Davidson, Mrs. Del bert Piper, Mrs. Roger Campbell, Mrs. Bob Lovgren, Mm. Win Vlall and the hostess. Prizes won were Mrs. Cutsforth, HI, Mrs. Davidson, traveling. Mrs. Munkers, second HI and Mrs. Cox low. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schoonover and family are liv ing In the Ed Hunt home In Lexington. Boardman Extension Meet Changed - Hello Heppner Meets March 16 Hello Heppner Extension Unit meeting will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 16 at the Neighborhood Center. Supt. Ron Daniels will speak on "You and Your Schools". Molly Saul, Home Extension Agent for Morrow and Umatilla Counties will be present. Coffee and cookies will be served. Everyone is cordially elcome. The Boardman Home Exten sion Unit meeting date has been changed from March 11 to Thursday, March 18 at 10 m. at the Riverside High School Auditorium. County School Supt. P.on Dan iels will present the lesson, "School Laws," which will be followed by a discussion period. All Boardman-Irrigon area resi dents (men too) are welcome to attend. Call 481-4045 on or before Monday. March 15, to make reservations for lunch at the school cafeteria. Regular business meeting will follow. Roy and Norman Vawters of Meridian, Idaho, were in Hepp ner recently visiting her son, Dick McRoberts and family and her uncle, C. J. D. Bauman and wife. Visit Mrs. Hunt Ceorge Hermann of The Dal les, was a recent Lexington and Hermlston visitor. He visited his mother. Mrs. Otlllla Hunt of Heppner, who recently had ma jor back surgery at Good Sa maritan In Portland, and Is now recuperating at the home of her daughter In Hermlston. Mrs. Elden Padberg, Mrs. Mervln Leonard, and Mrs. Bob Davidson were luncheon day guests of Mrs. Gene Bissinger of Pendleton one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Smith and children of Roseburg were re cent visitors in Lexington. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Davis and children are living in the Britt house, while he is employed at Gar Aviation. Mrs. Carl Marquardt and Mr. and Mrs. T. E. The Youth Groups of the Heppner and Lexington Christ ian Churches motored to Board- man to hear the musical group of The Dalles at the Boardman Community Church Sunday eve ning. Dick Struckmeier, former Heppner student, is director of the group as well as youth min ister of the church in The Dal les. Mrs. VanWinkle Home Mrs. Cleo VanWinkle is again at her home after a stay in Pio neer Memorial Hospital. Mrs. VanWinkle"! daughter, Mrs. June DuVall of St. Louis was expected Tuesday to visit her mother. The Lexington Grange women cleared over $100 at their re cent Sunday dinner. They ap preciate the large attendance and wlih to say Thank You to those who attended aa well as to those who worked and con tributed and to the Bank of Eastern Oregon for their ad space. Harold Cohn Improves Phil Ma honey received word that Harold Cohn was to get out of a Yakima hospital this week Ho is reported as much better. It is expected that he will be staying with his son and fam ily, the Phil Conns up in El- lensburg.
