Several folks around here believe It's mighty lively or a ghost town. For many years this mountain town, located 20 miles south of Heppner was a well known stage stop. It was well known also as very friendly place and had, for decades, gay Saturday night dances there. Two new soft white winter wheat varieties have been de veloped for Northwest growers. Paha, a club wheat, and Luke, a semi-dwarf wheat, were devel oped cooperatively by the Ore gon, Washington and Idaho Ag ricultural Experiment Stations and the Crops Research Divis ion, Agricultural Research Serv ice. USDA, with Dr. Orvllle Vo- cel. AltSUSDA, leader of the ! wheat breeding project at WSU. A limited amount of seed of the new varieties will be avail able this fall from Crop Im provement Association members. Paha, most competitive with varieties grown In the 11-15 Inch rainfall areas, is highly resist ant to stripe rust and moder- I ately resistant to foot rot. It is more susceptible than Omar to some mildew and flag smut and is expected to replace Omar, El- 1 gin and Moro vaireties. It will be grown In the club wheat areas of Eastern Oregon where rainfall is light. Four to 8 inches shorter than Omar, Paha resists lodging and shattering, has good germlna ! tion and Is similar to Omar In winter hardiness and reaction to dwarf bunt. Since 1967, Paha I has outyielded Omar 6 to 47 I percent in Washington trials. It, also produces flour of low vis cosity and high quality. Dr. E. Allan, ARS USDA, stationed at WSU, made the final selec tion of Paha. Luke, a semMwarf (similar to Gaines, Is resistant to all known races of common and dwarf bunt. It Is markedly su perior to Gaines and Nugalnes in resisting Cercosporella foot rot, snow mold caused by Fus arium nivale and to stripe rust It Is expected to replace variet ies susceptible to new races of dwarf bunt and will be grown on limited acreage in Oregon where dwarf smut Is a problem Similar to Gaines in appear once, winter hardiness and growth, Luke is slightly less re slstant than Nugaines to shat tering and lodging and is more susceptible to flag smut. Dr. C. J. Peterson, Jr.. ARS USDA plant breeder stationed at WSU, made the final selec tion for the Luke variety. Dr. R. J. Metzger. ARSUSDA, OSU, crossed one of the first parents. In 16 field trials in 1969. Luke averaged 9 per cent higher yield than Gaines. However, un der conditions of no disease damage, it yielded sharply less than Gaines. In milling qual ity, Luke is superior to Gaines and except for a slightly weak er gluten is approximately eq ual to It in baking qualities. Bruce Mover Awarded Masters Bruce Cleon Moyer, son of Melvln Moyer, recently complet ed the summer session at the University of Montana. He has been awarded his master's do. gree in Business Administration there. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Backer, Mike and Gard of Cold Beach arrived Thursday from Ashland where they had been attending SOC summer school. They came to pick up their No. 3 son, Chris Becker, who had been visiting for two weeks with his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heard. They left Saturday for their home and Mr. and Mrs. Heard went to Portland to attend 25th wedding anniversary festivities Mr. Heard s brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rogers. Sister Judo Maureen of Glenn Riddle, Pa., is spending this week visiting her uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Healy Mr. and Mrs. Charles Daly and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. Doherty She will be teaching at River side, Calif, this fall. As she grew up she used to drive truck for her uncles. She still keeps her saddle horse at the Doherty ranch. She plans to get in some horseback riding be fore she leaves. Mrs. Ira Lee Edgerton. Karen nd Ethan of Glendora, Calif., are here visiting with her moth er, Mrs June Fields.
