Hcppncr, Condon . nd Kinua were there to play v.-ith the hosts. Over 15 from Ifppner entered. Awards won ,y Willow Creek Country Club Members were low gross and 'ong drive, Lowell Cribble; first low net. Bob Jepsen; second low net, Bob Kelly; third low net, ijay Ferguson, e-nuie ounufi.wn won the second flight in the Sole Survivor. Low gross was won by Beverly Gundcrson; sec ond low gross. Hazel Mahoney md low net; Suzanne Jepsen. It was a beautiful day for the cause. The rest of the club mem bers surely appreciate the ef fort and results. A formal opening of golf for the women will be held Tues day, April 21 at 12:30. Dee Crib ble and Helen Schaffitz are hosting a luncheon to get the season started. Cards of invita tion have been sent out, with an RSVP to Dee Cribble. Coif may be played tefore or after the luncheon, as you wish or Just come for the first get together. ja r i Kinzua Has Alaskan Visitor SPRING SHOWERS Bring May Flower and a big attendance to the annual spring Boys' and Girls' PE program I from Uft the girls show an intricate routino with boops: Penny Papineau and Penny Marquardt Barbara's Diary We went by the Rugby field where they have Rugby games in the winter and use the same field for cricket in the summer. They also have bowling greens that are grassy areas, very close ly clipped, much like golf grecas. Bowling is an outdoor sport with 2, 4 or 8 players in teams. The game is very different from our indoor howling alleys altnougn they do have a few indoor al leys in the larger cities. the first Tuesday in Feb ruary', school starts for the be ginning of the school year. They have two two-week vacations, one in May and one in Sept ember. Theri school is out the second week In December for the year. All of the students from primary, high school and col lege wear school uniforms. The primary is the same as our pri mary, high school is similar to our upper grades and college is equal to our high schools, ex cept they are much more voca tional. Hire Car and Driver We hired a car and driver to take us from Auckland to Ro torua. The terrain is rolling hills and ' valleys. Paddeoks (pas tures) of various sizes from 5 to 50 acres or even more with sheep and dairy cattle. Most of the cattle are Jersey, some Guernsey and less Holstcin. One place we stopped had Bolted Galloway and Dun Galloway. We stopped at another station (farm) where they were in the process of shearing the sheep. These were cross bred and had a long stapled coarse wool. They bale the wool in bales approxi mately 4x4x4. These will weigh between 3 and 4 hundred pounds, Wc also slopped by a horse Vanch where they were raising race horses and show horses Some are trained as gaited show Kt.rk and others are trotters and gallopers. To see a race one either goes to tne gallops treg ular races) or to the trots (trot ting races). This place had over 100 horses. We stopped at Hamilton, which is a lumber mill and min ing town for refreshment at the local pub. The building was as laryp as the fair building. One nart is a lunch area, another is a Mand-up bar with high ta hies, for men alone, and there is another section that has ta bles and chairs for men with ladies. There is also a small dancing area. There were only 6 to 10 customers there when we stopped but our driver told us the building is packed from about 5:00 p.m. till midnight ev ery night after work. They serve mostly beer, and very good, too, besides lighter and heavier re freshments. Visit Fish Hatchery We stopped at Rainbow Springs, which is a fish hatch ery but Is In natural pools at the head of a river. They raise rainbow trout and the fish come into the pools to spawn and then leave. The pools are then screen ed off to keep the other large fish from entering and eating the finerlings. There is an ar boretum where they have plant ed trees from all over the world. A redwood that was planted 25 years ago was 40 inches through at the base. Douglas firs plant ed about the same time are 48 inches in diameter. Register Now For Kindergarten Mothers with Kindergarten age children tmust be 5 on or before Nov. 15 1 interested in sending their children next year are asked to contact Ann Grif fith at 676-5554. Teacher will again be Mrs. Marcel Jones. Kindergarten fees are $10.00 for registration and $8.00 per month tuition for nine months. Scholarships are available for those who need them. in s ' i .c . j VlTtw vf " TRACKMEN AT EOC On the track roster for East ern Oregon College this spring are Tim Smith, who is a Junior out for the 2-3 mile and 6 mile runs; and Larry Buell of Spray, a senior who is out for weights. LOCAL NEWS The lone High Horse 4-H Sew ing Club met at the home of Mrs. Darrell James. Karen Crow ell, junior leader for the club, gave a demonstration on tech niques of giving a demoastra tion. She pointed out that you never can practice too much. We discussed suggested demon strations for the rest of the year. Teena Stefani and Cassy Chapel served refreshments. Kathy Gilbert, reporter Jay Keithley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Keithley is In St. Mary's Hospital In Walla Walla to have major surgery on Tues day of this week. Heppner Civic League is un packing clothes to get ready for their annual spring Rummage Sale on April 24-25. Anyone hav ing things to contribute may leave them at the old variety store building or call one of the I members for pickup. Mr. and Mrs. Gail McCarty were in Portland Monday. Gail was making arrangements foi the annual Portland 8th grade tour in Eastern Oregon. Here in Morrow County there will be 31 eighth graders visit on Apr. 24-25-26. Gail is Morrow Coun ty's 4-H Club Agent. The breakfast by the Men's Fellowship of the First Chris tian Church, Heppner. and the Church of Christ, Lexington, will be at 7 a.m., Sunday at the Lex ington Church. Program will be provided by Orville Cutsforth who will talk on his trip to Australia. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Soward drove to La Grande Sunday to attend service at the Christian Church and 10 have dinner with Rev. Gordon Mildrum at the church. After dinner they drove on to Haines to visit old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McCullough, who Is a stockman and cattle buyer. The Sowards returned home that evening, having driv en about 300 miles. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rice of Re no, Nev., are announcing the birth of a son on April 6. The baby has been named Robert Kent and weighed 5 lb., 4 oz. at birth. The family formerly lived in the lone area. BILL JEPSEN is working out on the parallel bars. Dean Wright on the left hurt his wrist during practice and wasn't able to participate on the final performance. Elks Plan Anglers Stag Tonight The Elks Lodge is planning an Anglers Stag Night on April 16. The evening starts with a deep fat fried prawn feed at 6:30 p.m. There will be lots of prizes. There will be a Baked Ham dinner Saturday evening at 6:30 for Elks and their out-of-town friends.
