Also Melvin Hanson of Bucyrus, N. D. Pater nal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. L. G. McKay of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Mrs. L. D. McKay of Hot Springs, S. D. Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Barnhart were overnight guests at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sherer on Friday. Their daughter Judith returned home to Redmond following an t txended visit with Mr. and Mrs. Sherer. Several ladies attended a cof fee hour on Saturday at Hermis ton at the home of Mrs. Eleanor Herman. Going from lone were, Mrs. Victor Rietmann, John Jep sen, Willard French, Earl Mc Cabe, Fred Nichoson, Walter Roberts, Harold Sherer, Lee Pal mer, Marion Palmer, Clarence Holtz and Mrs. Kenneth Palmer of Lexington. Also present was Mrs. Cecil Thome of HermLston, former Ionian. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ball were New Years dinner guests at the home of their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ball. Mr. and Mrs. Elby Alters and Danny were in Portland over the New Years holiday. Their grandson Kenny returned to his home with them following a vis it here. They visited with their daughter Darlene and also their son Le&. Nerve Gas Meeting at Ion Approximately 20 persons were on hand at the lone Leg ion Hall on Sunday evening to hear Joe Smith, Umatilla Co, Dist. Attorney discuss the "nerve gas" situation. The main theme of Mr. Smith's talk centered around very pertinent internal problems we have In our country and the way citizens can help combat these problems. Open discussion .was held both pro and con about these problems which affect us local ly. No direct quotes were given by any of the group for publi cation. It appears there are two sides of this problem and though discussions are held, the majority of the people agree they were really un educated to have various problems and what can be done to solve the situa tions. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jepsen of lone were dinner guests at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Mike Luedde prior to the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. De Bisschop and children Bobble and Rachelle of Ontario, spent the Christmas holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Morrison. Mr. De Bisschop is the registrar for Treasure Valley Junior College. While visiting at the Morrisons, young miss Rachelle celebrated her 1st birthday on Dec. 26. Mr. and Mrs. De Bisschop and Mr. Morrison attended the Classic Basketball games in Portland before returning to their home in Ontario. Bridal Shower Held Mrs. Les Brooks, the former Janice Snider, was honored guest at a bridal shower on Dec. 30 at the Catholic Church In lone. Hostesses for the lovely shower were the mothers of the graduation class of 1968 and Mrs. Don Llnnell. The gift table was centered with a shower umbrella and wihte polnsettlas decorated the room. Mrs. Brooks was assisted by Maureen McElligott and Willa Johnson and Terry O'Connor al so assisted about the room. Mrs. Lee Pettyjohn cut and served the cake which was In the white and green motif. Mrs. Lester Brooks of Arlington, also from Arlington were Jean Mikkalo, Mrs. Oscar Burllngame, Mrs. Howard Eubanks and Marlene Davis and Freda Welse of MtK kalo. The new Mrs. Brooks Is at tending BMCC this term and Is residing in Pendleton while Sgt. Lesly Brooks of the- Marines is near Da Nang Vietnam faiiN Bar Exam Victor D. Vertner? son-ln law of Mr. and Mrs. Jo&te 'Morrison was notified In December that he has passed his bar examin of 4,000 to pass their exams. Mr. Vertncr took hi Pre Law at Oregon State University, graduating with honors In 1966, His Law Schooling Was complet ed at the Santa : Clara Law School in Santa Clara Calif. He i graduated in June of 1969, but the results of the exams were not known until December. He is associated with a law firm in Santa Clara working mostly within criminal law. Mr. and Mrs. Vertner have a son, Mark, and they make their home in Santa Clara. Victor is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam J. Verlner of Richmond, ,' Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Con nor took their daughter Terry buck to the university or ure - gon Sunday. j Mr. and Mrs. Mike Matthews motored to Monmoutn on bun-. day to take their daughters ( back to college following the holiday vacation. Routine busi ness was irt order for the' Mon day night meeting of the coun-1 cil. The lone Garden Club will meet on Jan. 14 for their regu lar meeting. ,..-. Holiday guests at the Garland Swansons' included their son Mr. and Mrs. John Swanson, Kris ten and Kendall of Seattle, Wn. Mrs. James Drabny, the for mer Wilma Dalzell, underwent major surgery recently for a ruptured disc in her back. Mr. and Mrs. Art Dalzell went to be with her. She Is up and about but it will be some time before she can return to work. Mr. and Mrs. Art Dalzell have returned home following their visit with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Crawford at Albany. They also visited with Mr. and Mrs. James Drabny of Eagle Creek and Tress MeClintock. brother of Mrs. Dalzell at Monmouth. Fol lowing their return home this past week, they spent New Years Eve at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George York at Mik kalo. At Smouse Home Miss Betty Kowolowskl, who Is teaching near Portland, and her hmthor Fred Kowolowskl of Madras were recent visitors at the Kenneth Smouse home. Fred and Kenneth Lynn were class mates at OSU. Kenneth J. Smouse and son Carl accompanied Cherl ly n Smouse to OSU on Sunday where she returned for the win ter term of her senior year. Miss Smouse Is an Art Major. Mr. Smouse and Carl visited at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Richard K. Baker and returned Mrs. Anne Smouse to her home In Portland following her visit over the holidays. Mrs. Baker is the former Shirley Smouse. Kenneth Smouse returned to the University of Utah at Salt Lake on Sunday following the holiday vacation spent with hl parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse. Kenneth is doing re search work at the U of U work ing toward his Ph D. Mrs. Ella Burgoyne has re lumed to her home following. confinement at Pioneer Memor ial, hospital. The college boys won by 10 points 72 to 62. The Mustangs shot right with the Mountaineers in the free throw end of the game, each club sinking 66. Where the Mustangs fell short was on field goals. The Mountaineers sank 30 to the Mustangs' 18. La Verne Van Marter and John McCabe were the sharp shooters for the Mustangs. Van Marter poured in 16 points while McCabe dumped In 13. - The first half was the Horse men's downfall. They were out- scored by nine points in the first quarter, and again in the second. At the end of the first half the score stood 41-23. After the halftime pep talk the Mustangs were able to find the hoop a little better. In the third quarter alone they scored 20 points, which was only three points short of their first hall accumulation. n the fourth panel the Mus tangs chalked up another 19 tallies, but despite a hot sec ond half they were still 10 points short of the Mountaineers .when the horn sounded.
