Many people, throughout the world, know that the merry tinkle of the Christmas Kettle Bells and the cheery smiles of the bell ringers exemplify the spirit of Christmas, and are aware that the coins will be used to brighten lives of others less fortunate. More Important, however, the coins in the kettles are the checks which generous-spirited persons send In to the Salva tion Army at Christmas. All of the money is used to help families In this area, brightening the Christmas sea son throughout the county, and for the Army's vast program of winter relief. Funds remaining after the Christmas season are used for the continuing welfare program of the Salvation Army. Contributions for the Christ mas work of the Salvation Ar my in the local area should be sent to the committee treasurer, William Siewert, Heppner. Thursday. December 11. 1919 FIFTY YEARS AGO The Ileppner Commercial Club went on record last mursaay as favoring the restoration of the death penalty in Oregon. This action was taken after a reso lution from the Pendleton Com mercial Association had been read by Sec. Patteson. While the club expressed itself as favoring the restoration of capital pun ishment, It did not favor at this time, the calling of a special election for that purpose. L. D. Countryman and fam ily have arrived from Kansas and Mr. Countryman will suc ceed W. L. Holmes as manager of the Tum-A-Lum Co. at Lex ington. B. G. Sigsbee has purchased the Paul Webb residence prop erty in north Heppner. Mr. Webb, who has been living In this city since selling his extensive sheep ranch on Balm creek, departed on Sunday with his family for Walla Walla, where they expect to reside in the future. A tree, planted on the highway at 8th St. was decorat H hv members of the Lion's Club Saturday, with snow fall ing to add atmospnere out noi warmth. Those working were Don Ad ams, Lee LeBlanc, Mike Snyder and James McRae. The date for the program at the A. C. Houghton Elementary School, has been set for Dec. 18, at 7:30. Principal Mick Tolar, Don Ad ams, Earl Sanders, Fred Freder- ickson, Bill and mirrei L-ooicy, made a trip into the mountains out of Heppner and brought back a load of Christmas trees for the grade school at Irrigon and Riverside High School, at Boardman. Lloyd Berger was re-elected to the cemetery board at the an nual election held Dec. 1. He has been on the cemetery board since it was formed in 1958, be fore the cemetery loctaion was moved from the Columbia River back to Its present location cast of Irrigon. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Berger re turned from an extended trip through Idaho, Utah, Nevada and California. Points of inter est to them were the open pit Copper mine near Salt Lake City, Zion National Park and the Glen Canyon Dam. When they reached the Grand Canyon Mrs. Berger took a mule trip down to the first level, to the Indian Gardens. Thou traveled through Death Valley and went into Furnace Creek Ranch, where tney sia fnr the nieht. Taking sev eral side trips to view points and Craters, they came to pot ty's Castle, which they toured and described as fabulous. Going north to Reno, they looked up Mrs. Echo Ford, who took them to dinner at the Gold Nugget in Sparks, Nev. They took in Harrahs Antique Auto collection and saw Bobby Gent rv here. In Paradise they visit ed a sister and brother-in-law before driving north though Oregon to spend Thanksgiving with relatives. The annual election of the Ir rigon Rural Fire district was held Dec. 1, and John Brandt was elected to the 5-member board. The board has had a series of work sessions recently and installed equipment on a brush truck waich was donated to the district by the Boeing Co. about a year ago. A meeting was held at the firehouse Monday evening to discuss Fire Insurance.
