A Japanese theme, "Sayo
nora". was used for decorations.
Music was furnished by "The
Shadows" from Portland.
Eight grangers were Initiated
in the third and fourth degree
at a meeting here Saturday
night at Greenfield Grange hall.
They Included Mr. and Mrs.
Carl Wicklander of Greenfield,
Linda Baldwin from Stanfield
grange, and Mr. and Mrs. Don
DeMoss, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Zas
trow and Oscar Hall from Col
umbia Grange at Hermiston.
There were 26 guests for the
evening, 17 from Columbia
grange and nine from Stanfield.
Morton Wolverton, master of
Columbia, and Karl Krause,
Stanfield master were among
them. Wolverton substituted in
the master's chair during the
initiation, Alice Jack.on from
Columbia was in the chaplain's
chair, and Alex Jones from Col
umbia substituted for the stew
ard. The Greenfield Grange will
also exemplify the third and
fourth degree again at the next
meeting, May 17, for those who
wish to take them.

Portland last Wednesday, where
she has been the past several
months for medical treatment,
after spending ten days at her
home here.
Rev. and Mrs. Bob Miller of
Portland visited Rev. and Mrs.
George Neeley Sunday morning
and attended Boardman Com
munity church. Rev. Miller is
pastor of the Westmoreland Bi
ble church in Portland.
Earl Struckmeier, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Struckmeier,
has enlisted in the U. S. Naval
Reserve and left Sunday for two
week's basic training at San Di

it at the home of Bedord's niece,
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson, and
to visit with his sister. Mrs. El
ma Davis, who was there from
Cutbank, Mont.
Son of Early Doctor
Dies in Washington
Funeral services for Dr. Ralph
C. Swinburne, former Heppner
resident, were held early this
month in Seattle, Wash., accord
ing to information received from
a cousin, Mrs. N. L. Lotz of
San Diego, Calif. He was an
oral surgeon and practiced in
Seattle until a few years ago.
Dr. Swinburne was born and
raised in Heppner, where his
father was a practicing medi
cal doctor. He was the grand
son of Mrs. E. J. Ayers. He is
survived by his widow, May
belle Swinburne; a daughter.
Mrs. Robert Berst of Seattle, and
four grandchildren.
Ralph Thompson is reported
making "very good gains" from
a recent illness which has kept
him hospitalized for the past six
weeks. He returned to his home
Sunday after being under med
ical care at Pioneer Memorial
hospital, and is encouraged by
the steady improvement.
Mrs. Vesta Kilkenny traveled
to Klamath Falls earlier this
month for a two-day insurance
school on April 10-11. During
the meetings particular study
