SKBETY l i ( -X Rourk Book Reviewed For Bookworm Club Mrs. Herman Winter was hos tess to ten members of the lleppner Bookworms club Tues day evening, October 29, as they gathered at her home for their last meeting of the month. Book review for the evening was presented by Mrs. Robert Abiams. who reviewed "The Old Man's Boy Grows Older," by Robert Rourk. The book is com posed of a series of true stories and incidents in the life of the author's grandfather. Mrs. Bill Weatherford, presi dent of the club, presided over the business meeting, after which the hostess, Mrs- Winter, served the refreshments to her guests. Next meeting of the club will be held at the home of Mrs. Cornett Green on Tuesday even ing, November 19. Donee to Aid Family A public benefit dance will be held at Mikkalo Grange Hall in the Condon area for the Frank Johnson family on Satur day night, November 16, start ing at 9:30 p.m., with music by the Western Gentlemen. Mrs. Johnson was recently released from a Portland hospital where she received extensive treatment for a rare paralitic disease. Pro ceeds will aid the family with heavy medical expenses. MRS. DICK WILKINSON Assoc. Grand Conductress OES Grand Reception Planned for Saturday Ruth Chapter No. 32. Order of the Eastern Star, will honor Its distinguished member, Mrs. Dick (Virginia) Wilkinson, at a public reception Saturday even ing. November 16. Mrs. Wilkin son will be honored in her state office. Associate Grand Conduct ress of the Grand Chapter of Oregon, to which she was elect ed in June. 1968. The reception will be held In the HeDoner High school gym nasium, starting at 8:00 p.m., with neighboring chapters, friends and relatives invited to attend. Mrs. Wilkinson has been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since April, 1947. She served as worthy matron of Ruth Chapter In 1947; served the Grand Chapter as a Grand Page in 1958; held a three-year term on the credentials commit tee from I960 to 1963, and as an assistant on the same commit tee in 1964. She was also chair man of the Estarl Fund com mittee in 1966 and was appoint ed Grand Ruth in 1967. Texas Guest Greeted At Whitaker Home Mrs. Hal Whitaker entertained friends at her home Saturday evening with a get-acquainted party honoring Mrs. W. P. Grig sby. Mr. and Mrs. Grigsby are house guests at the Whitaker home, visiting here from Spear man, Texas. Following dinner two tables of bridge were in play. High prize was won by Mrs. Jerry Sweeney and second high by Mrs. Grigsby. Others present in cluded Mrs. Joe Balfe, Mrs. Dale Holland, Mrs. Creston Robinson, Mrs. David McLeod, Miss Pat Cassidy, the guest of honor, and the hostess, Mrs. Whitaker. Students Selected For Friendliness A senior boy and sophomore girl were paired as Boy and Girl of the Month for November. Eleven hours of lectures, illustrated with slides, were given by six educators and pro fessionals on various topics of landscaping and design for gar deners, city planners, park boards, highway departments, public beaut If icat Ion commit tees, and others concerned with outdoor beautlflcation. The club was also represent ed bv Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Edith Nichoson and Mrs. Clell Rea at the 30th anniversary tea and chrysanthemum show of the Umatilla Garden club on No vember 1. Mrs. Martin exhibit ed 33 varieties of chrysanthe mums from her garden, and was presented a special corsage. On Saturday, December 14. the Bloomer Girls Christmas show will bo held In Hermiston at the C'UC building. Birth Announced Mrs. Olive Hughes received word Sunday of the birth of her first great-grandchild, a girl, born Saturday, November 9. to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Roberts of Brookline. Mass. The little girl has been named Jennifer Lee and weighed 8 lb., 12 oz. Mrs. Roberts is the former Julia Loe Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Marshall of Sweet Home and formerly of lleppner. Roberts Is currently completing his senior year of studies at Harvard Law School. Guests during th past week end at the home of Mrs. Mat tie Green were her son-in-law and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Omar McCaleb, and two dau ghters, Barbara and Beverly, of Portland. McCaleb works as a counselor at the David Douglas High school In Portland. On Sunday afternoon they attended a family dinner at the Herman Green home. Episcopal Delegates Attend Convocation Several members of All Saints' Episcopal church attended the annual Convocation of the Mis sionary District of Eastern Ore son, held Friday through Sun day at St. Peter's Episcopal church In La Grande. Delegates were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lovd and the Rev. and Mrs. Dirk Ulnchart. Several opportunities were available to meet and talk with Bishop-elect William Sxfford. present dean of St. Michael's Cathedral in Boise. Idaho, and Ills wife. Polly. At Convocation, Rev. Rlnehart was appointed to serve on the district council for a three-year term, and Frank Anderson was appointed bv the bishop to serve on the District Council of Advice. The little boy has been named Donald Lawrence and weighed 7 lb., 2 oz. Mrs. Burpee is the former Virginia Lou Turner. Maternal grandpar ents include Mr. and Mrs. Don Turner, Lexington; Mrs. J. O. Josephine Mahoney Baker of Portland writes that she met a Miss de Clifford at Trinity Epis copal church in Porland, and Miss de Clifford had visited with Mrs. Neville Blunt In Victoria, B. C. Mrs. Blunt is in a nursing home there, "a very pleasant one," Mrs. Baker said. Mrs. Blunt Is a former Heppner resi dent and the widow of the Uev. Neville Blunt, one time vicar of All Saints church, Heppner. Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Tholberg are her mother, Mrs. Kate Hiermeler of Napa, Calif., and her sister, Mrs. Rita Fischer, from Santu Rosa. Calif. The visitors arrived about a week ago and plan on remaining at the Tholberg homo for about a month, coming es pecelally for the 23th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Tholberg, which was celebrated with a family gettogether at the homo of their daughter, Carol, In Pendleton. Hostesses for the shower were Mrs. David Gray and Miss Erin Dick. Yellow and orange fall flower arrangements made by Mrs. Ed Dick were used as decorations about the room. Assisting the honoree with the gift opening were her sister-in-law, Mrs. Bill Snyder of La Grande, and Betty Angell ol Portland. Centering the serving table was a pink and blue decorated cake, cut and served by Miss Dick. Kay Daggett assisted by serving coffee and Carol Raw lins served punch.
