Farmers fchould determine the
Matus of herbicides (and other
pesticides) from their dealers
before purchasing. Dealers, com
mercial applicuiors. or county
extension agents can help make
election fr specific uses.
While L'SDA will no longer
register chemicals for food or
feed crops u on "wro toler
ance" or "no-residue" basis,
temporary extensions may be
granted after the Food and Drug
Administration has established
a ucrmlsslble or negligible level
of residue which may legally re
main on food or feed. And, manv
of the more Important pesticide
use registrations have been ex
tended hv USDA after compan
les indicated they planned to
obtain data needed to estaDiisn
a permissible or negligible res
idue level.
Most extensions are for a one
year period. However, the effect
ive date can be extended until
December 31. 1970, in order to
cover such things as prolonged
liitmrntorv feeding trials.
In the meantime, some other
registration cancellations will
probably occur In 1959 and 1970
as companies allow deadlines to
expire without providing naia
needed to continue registrations
for certain products.
