HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday. Mar 18. 1X8 Proper Timing Important In Controlling of Weeds By gene winters County Extension Agent Proper timing with the appll ration of new herbicide In win ter wheat Rave good weed con trol thin year In the Columbia Basin counties. Field size applications show ed the value of I.lnuron I Lor oxl, Bromoxynll, (Bromlnal, Buc trill and the mixture of brom oxynll and MCPA (Bronatel when applied according to label ed directions. A tour of wheat fields In the region by Ilex Warren, extension farm crops specialist, and Ar nold Appleby, Farm Crops de partment, both Orecon State Un iversity, with Industry represen tatives, applicators and county agents In April, showed the im portance of timing. In Rcneral, Rood weed control was observed from Lorox ap plied In December and January. Bromoxynll applied during the same period gave Rood results. Applications of the bromoxynll MCTA In late February and March gave Rood control. Brom oxynll must be applied when the weeds are small. The mix ture should bo applied when the wheat has reached 5 or more leal since and while the weeds are small In the seedling stage. Morrow county wheat growers experiencing poor weed control with 2,4-D should investigate the new materials In the next year's crop. It Is recommended that small acreages be treated at first. Poor Results Expected In Saqebrush Spraying Timing of sagebrush spraylnR is always important, but It is particularly critical in a year of limited moisture like this one. A shortage of soil moisture means a shorter period when an effective kill of sagebrush can be expected. Spraying should be done when the big sagebrush Is tUirlu Pwir rocnltu wnnm he expected from sagebrush spray ing this year. Knapweed Needs Treating In Early Breed Stage The two knapweeds giving the most trouble in Morrow county are rapidly reaching the most susceptible stages for treating. Diffused knapweed, prlmarly a range weed, should be spray led with 2,4-D, diemba (Banvel plants are in the bud stage. Russian knapweed, a taller growing, more heavily rooted species found more in cropland and bottom lands, should be treated In the early bud stage. This perennial can be control led with 2,4 D, diemba taBnvel D). I'lcloran (Tordonl, sodium chlorate and borate type sterl lants. The material to use de pends uimn extent of infesta tion, whether land is to be crop led or grazed, and closeness to other crop plants. Herbicide dealers, applicators or county extension agents, can help farm ers select proper material. Sprinkler Intake Rates Vary With Soil Types Sprinkler Irlgatlon Intake rates are frequently Judged In correctly In the design of sprink ler irrigation systems. Intake rate is a primary concern when considering sprinkler numbers, size and spacing. With the Intro duction of some self-propelled systems, the ability of soil to take water Is critical. Recently sprinkler Intake rate tests were made In Morrow county and In a number of fields close by In adjacent counties. On soils typical of much of the county wheat growing area north of Lexington Intake rates were found to be about 0.25 Inches per hour. On Ritzvllle soils similar to that tested the recommended maximum design rnt.a hv Mnrvln Shearer. Exten sion Irrigation Specialist, Is 0.25 to 0.28 inches per nour. un aage mnir cnilu ( frin n H in the north erly belt of the wheat growing area in tne counivi ine uesinn should not exceed 0.23 Inches per hour. If wa fnnnrl that with Enhra ta sand or loamy sand soils in north Morrow county tne resign rates could be 2.0 Inches per hour.
