Grange Sets Dinner Members of Lcxlneton Grange arc reminded of the reeulur meetlne on Saturday evening, November 18, at the granno hall. Families will Join lor a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m., with turkey furnished by the grange. Plans are being made for a program to follow the dinner. CALL US GENE ORWICK Program Emphasizes Dangers of Smoking To PTA Audience Henoner Elementary PTA met Wednesday, November 8, at the grade school multipurpose room with Mrs. Wallace Wolff pre siding. About 35 parents and teach ers attended the business meet ing and heard short reports from committee chairmen. Alan Martin, principal of the Elementary school, spoke brief ly on new report cards. A mo vie, "Too Tough To Care" was shown under the direction of Mrs. Herman Winter, program chairman. The movie, about teen-age smoking and Its ef fects, was accompanied by a showing of slides of lung tis sue, supplied by the TB and Health Association. Dr. Gerald Jones Interpreted the slides as they were shown. A membership drive Is being conducted by the ITA, and par ents are urged to Join and par- icipate in both local PTA un its. Co-hostesses for the evening were Mrs. bill Marquarai ana Mrs. Carl Marquardt, who serv ed dessert and coffee to those attending. It Is announced that tne an nual chili and noodle feed will be held January 9 in the high school cafeteria. Next meeting of the Elemen tary PTA unit will be January 10, and will be a business meet ing with Superintendent Ron Daniels and principals of schools reporting on some ad vancements made and on school policies in the district Monday evening, November 13, was the regular meeting night for Ruth Chapter No. 32. Order of the Eastern Star, in the Ma sonic hall. A potluck dinner was enjoyed before the business meeting by members and special guests, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Ewing. Mrs. tw ins visited the chapter in an of ficial capuclty. She Is the assoc iate conductress of the Grand Chapter ot Eastern Star of Ore gon. Kuth Chapter meets the sec ond and fourth Mondays of each month. All members are urged to attend these meetings Hnd participate In lodge activities. OREGON 9783S PHONE: 676-9625 Eighteen members of the First Christian and Methodist church youth groups enjoyed a week-end trip to Portland to participate in a youth retreat with Bethlehem Baptist youth. While in Portland the stu dents toured the Harbor Light Mission and the White Shield hospital. Both are sponsored and maintained by the Salvation Army. The youth were also guests of the Salvation Army for lunch on Saturday. They stayed in homes of the Bethle ham Baptist church members Saturday night. Students making the trip were Carla Weatherford, Gwe n n Drake, Marcia Young, Sue Chal ly, Rick Marquardt, Billie Jean Marquardt, Bruce Marquardt, Jeannine Hunt. Matt Hughes, Mary Kay Hughes, Barbara Aii stott, Donna Bradley Dean Wright, Hal Bergstrom, Bruce Berestrom. Teresa Wright. Lin da Cooper and Grace Hawk. Adults accompanying; tne young people were Mr. and Mrs. Jay Wheelhouse, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cline, Rena Marquardt, and Mrs. Bob Bergstrom. The group left early Satur day, November 11, for their trip and returned home Sunday evening. Preceding the Interesting talk given by Harold Cantrell, man ager of the Bonneville Power Administration, Lions club members were served a swiss steak dinner prepared by the ladies of O.E.S. at their meet ing Monday night. Serving were Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen, Mrs. Jim Barnett, and Mrs. Rudy Bergs trom. Hermiston Society Sponsors Festival The Hermiston Catholic Altar chnnnincr society, wun neip oi Knigms. Hot foods, cakes, pies and other foods will be served from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. each day. A large variety of games is plan ned, with appropriate prizes for all ages. Main door prize of the festival will be a $25 U. S. sav ings bond. Many Christmas gift articles will be on sale at various booths. In charge of the white elephant booth will be Mrs. Larry O'Rourke. Art Projects Shared By Lexington Women The making of a clever scare crow for a fall centerpiece was the project of the Hen House Biddies club at their meeting in Lexington on November 6. Mrs. Willard French was hostess for the 11 persons attending. The December project will be making of the "draped angel". Materials for the project will be arranged for if those inter ested in taking part will call Mrs. Ola Ruggles at 676-5598. The meeting will be Monday afternoon, December 4, at 1:30 1 p.m. in the Lexington city nail, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lun dell returned home this week from a visit with their daugh ter and family. Mr. and Mrs. .Francis Stack and girls, in Mis soula, Mont. Mr. and Mrs. Rov W. Llnds- trom attended the OSU vs USC eame in Corvallis on Saturday, Other local people were Bill and Rudy Bergstrom, Milt Morgan, Virgil Morgan, Lloyd Morgan, and Ed Brlstow. Bob Peterson, Herb Peterson, Tom White and Ralph Klncald returned home from elk hunting at Indian Springs campground in the Toll Gate area. All four mpn were able to fill their tags, HEC of Willows Grange will meet at the home of Mrs. Perry Morter on Friday. November 17, at 2:00. Election of officers will be held. The regular Grange meeting will be on November 18 at 8:00 p.m. The men of the group will serve a free pancake suooer at 6:00 before the busi ness meeting which will include the election of new officers. Mr. and Mrs. Gene tngleman of Portland were week-end guests at the home of his sis ter. Mrs. Vic Rietmann. The En glemans visited with Joe Engle- man and other irienas ana rei atives in the vicinity. Spending the week at tne Lewis Halvorsens are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Halvorsen of Med ford. Mrs. Margaret Wright of El Cajon, Calif., left by bus Friday for Payette, Idaho, after a two week visit here with her dau ehter and family. Mr. and Mrs. Lindsav Kincaid. After a brief visit in Idaho, Mrs. Wright will return to California. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nelson drove to Portland on Tuesday to assist Mrs. Nelson s mother, Mrs. S. C. Russell, with moving. On Friday, Mrs. Nelson attended the State Women's Fellowship Board meeting held at the con ference building of the United Church of Christ. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse and Mrs. Fred Burgoyne drove to Portland on Saturday to be with Mrs. Anna Smouse on her birthday. Later the group visit ed with Carl Smouse at Shan gri-la school in Salem and with Cherilyn Smouse at Corvallis. Miss Smouse is a sophomore at OSU this year. A get acquainted coiiee hour was held on Monday for Mrs. Clarence Mcintosh at the home of Mrs. Marion Palmer. Mrs. Harold Sherer, Mrs. John Jepsen, Mrs. Willard French, Mrs. Clell Rea and Mrs. Lee Palmer enjoyed the afternoon of visiting. November 18. beginning a 5:30 and serving until 7:30. Prices will be $1.00 for adults. 50c for grade school, and pre schoolers are free. The card par ty will follow the supper at 8:00 p.m. at a charge of $1.00 per person. Proceeds go toward the cost of recent improvements to the hall. Attending the 4-H Achieve ment Night at the Mikkalo Grange were Brock and Marcie Linnell, and Jody and Jeri Snow. The Gilliam county beef award was presented to Brock, and Jody won the food preser vation award. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Meyers of Portland spent the past weeic end with Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crab tree. The Dealin' Dozen pinochle club met at the home ot Mrs, Kenneth Howard in Heppner last Wednesday evening with a "come as you are party. Mrs Wayne Ball was given a prize for the lunniest "costume." Other prizes were won by Mrs. Bob Harrison, high; Mrs. Wayne Hams, low, and Mrs. Elwayne Bergstrom, traveling pinochle. Mrs. Harvey Smith and Mrs. Van Hubbard drove to Portland this week for medical appoint ments and to take in some Oregon Wheat Growers League president, was the guest luncheon speaker of the Gilliam County Wheat League meeting held at the Mikkalo Grange last week. Jep sen also spoke to the Union County Wheat League at La Grande the same week. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Palmer entertained with a dinner par ty at their Guests were McKinnev and Allen, Mrs. El eanor Herman, Mr. and Mrs. Markham Baker, Mrs. Vic Riet mann, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rich ards, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mar tin, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Palmer, and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Palmer and girls. Accident Claims Parents in N.D. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tews left by airplane on Saturday for Kindred. N. D. Thev were call ed by the death of Mrs. Tews' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Trangsrud, who were killed in a headon auto collision on Fri day just five miles from their home. The funeral was on Tues day in Kindred. Jacobs, Don Brlstow, Rollo Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Connor, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kessler and Mr. and Mrs. Omar Rietmann. While en route to visit friends in Corvallis the Edwin Kesslers hnd the misfortune to be involv ed in an auto accident during a heavy rain storm near Glad stone. The family was taken to Oregon City for treatment. Fortunately their Injuries were only minor, but the car had ex tensive damage and had to bo left in Oregon City.
