Death Claims Monument Man By MARTHA MATTESON MONUMENT Funeral serv ices were held for James Mur dock Stubblefleld at the Monu merit Presbyterian church on Wednesday, October 4. Ho died at his home In Monument on October 1, at the age ol 85 yeais. Rev. Gerald Emerson officiat ed, and Interment was in the family plot in the Monument cemetery. Murd Stubblefleld was born In Barry County, Mo., on June 27, 1882. He crossed the plains by wagon train to Oregon with his parents In the year of 1883. He remained in Grant county the rest of his life, except for a few years when he worked near Baker as a young man. On December 30, 1916, he was married to Mattie Williams of Monument, and they have made their home here since. He Is survived by his widow, Mattie; also one daughter, Mrs. Rota Cupper of La Grande; one son, George Stubblefield, Mon ument; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends, Serving as pall bearers were Jack Cavender, Jack Sweek, Stanley Boyer, Gus Peterson Jim Croker and Joe Elder. Hon orarv bearers were Kd Round Georce Stirritt. Frank Elder, Moton Cupper, Mead Gilman and Rho Bleaman. The American Legion Auxil iarv held a meeting last Thurs dav nicht In their hall. Young delegates who attended Boys and Girls State last summer eave verv interesting talks, They were Dale Smith, Naomi Dayhlll and Jean Hill. Bob Otta, geologist from Port land State Colleee. was an ov ernight guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs'. Ed Clark last Thursday. Church Clears roperty Debts With Ceremony The annual Stewardship Din ner of the lone unnea nurin of Christ was held Sunday, Oct tober 22, in the church social rooms. - One of the highlights of the evening was the burning of the mortgage for the Christian Edu cation building, which the church completed , constructing in 1965. Grain Growers Set Annual Meet Date Annual meeting and banquet of the Morrow County Grain Growers, Inc., has been sched uled for Monday night, Novem ber 6, Harlan McCurdy, Jr., manager, announces. The dinner meeting will be in the Morrow county fair pa vilion and champion beef will be served as the main course with door pirzes of champion beef also to be given. Further details will be announced later. Partlows Attend Postal Meeting In Puerto Rico Mr. and Mrs. Albert Partlow and Sheryl. Irrlgon, attended the 63rd annual convention of the National Association of Post masters held October 3 to 10, at San Juan, Puerto, Rico. While much of the convention time is devoted to official bus iness and educational programs organized to improve field man agement of the U. S. Postal Sys tem, postmasters attend at their own expense In the Interests of the Postal Depatment. Postmaster General Lawrence F. O'Brien was the major conven tion speaker at the grand ban quet held on Monday, October 9. Other major speakers includ ed Assistant Postmasters Gener al William M. McMillan, Willi am J. Hartigan, John L. O'Mar- Richard J. Murphy, Dr. Leo Sr. Packer, a representative of the Chief Inspector's office and General Counsel Timothy J. May. More than 3,600 postmasters ana their guests attended the San Juan convention in one of the largest civilian airlifts ever organized by U. S. airlines. Enroute to Puerto Rico, the Partlows, accompanied by Mrs. Partlow's nephew. Ronald Berg of Vancouver, Wash, spent four days in Washington, D. C. and New YoTk City. In Washington they visited the Washington and Lincoln Memorials, the CaDitol and White House, National Art Gallery, Archives of America Bldg.. If hi performance had equalled hi effort when he won In Morrow county, be would have defeated the champion at The Dalles, but he was 20 feet short of his good mark here. Ronald returned to his home in Vancouver, Wash., from New York, and Partlows flew on to San Juan. Also attending the convention from Irrlgon were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hoover, retired postmaster and clerk of the Fossil, Oregon, post office.
