The request was presented by Mayor Wilson in behalf of Mr. Smailman who found it Impossible to be ores ent at the meeting. The request was denied in a roll call vote with Keith. Shade and McCoy favoring rejection and Henner abstaining. Councilman Stewart was absent. The recorder reported no bids had been received for furnish ing the city 900 yards of crush ed rock other than from Schnell and Co. of Hermiston. The council voted to accept their bid to furnish the specified amount stockpiled at Irrigon. A real enat Ion tendered by Mrs. Hougnton as recorder-treasurer was discussed at length. Because there are only two more months until the annual ap pointment for this office is con sidered, she agreed to continue until that time. GEORGE, CITY RECORDER 35-36c At Council Meet of the necessary 48 potential us ers had made application and paid the $100 connection charge. It was emphasized again to the council that further steps such as Issuing bonds, authorizing the engineers to proceed with design and actual construction of any phase of the proposed project are dependant upon sec uring 48 customers for service. Mayor Wilson suggested that some time might be saved by leveling and shaping up the lots where the city well would be drilled before the contracts are awarded. This would give time for the ground to settle and stabilize. No action was taken to proceed. Mrs. Mary Adams was called to Springfield, Mo., by the sud den death of her sister, who was killed in a car accident Mrs. Adams was to remain there about 10 days. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart of Island City were visitors at the home of her mother, Mrs Ruth McCoy and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Stewart and family. Clarence Proctor was released from the Pendleton hospital lol lowing eye surgery. rne Assembly or God church had as a special speaker a man from the State Association on Alcoholic Problems. Harley Hammond of Gridlev. Kan., left Friday after spending two months with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Coy. Mrs. Vera Cooley left Friday to spend the week-end visiting with her brother-in-law and sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Wltaker at Scappoose. Rev. and Mrs. John Kenney went to Salem to attend com-. mittee meetings for the Assem bly of God church. Traveling with them to Portland was Mrs, Walt Agee of Umatilla who stayed to visit a sister. The Ken neys returned to Irrigon Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. Ben McCoy and Vernon Stewart traveled to land Citv on Mondav and Tues day. and staved with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart. While there they went hunting and brought back a deer. Among others, these hunters returned home with their deer. The Clarence Proctors, Darrel and Perry Pummel, Chester Wil son, Howard Zehner, and the Kenneth EDDenbauehs. Mrs. Howard Eppenbaugh left Sunday afternoon for her home in Orchard. Neb., rollowing month's stay with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs Kenneth Eppenbaugh and fam nv. The young people of the As sembly or God church held party Wednesday evening the basement of the parsonage, Games were played and rerresh ment of cookies, and punch were served. After a short business meet ing. the program was turned ov er to James Carey who present ed the National Honor Society initiation. Members are Nikl Miller, Jean Hill. Naomi Dahill. Nancy Sure wait, and Jim Stubblefieid. Room count was taken and the prize went to the senior class. Refreshments were served and the next meeting was announc ed for Wednesday, November 8. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnle Harris drove to Portland last Saturday to visit their baby son Jeffrey George, who is in the Hospital there. The infant had surgery October 9, and is reported to be Drogressing satisfactorily. Miss Dorothy Merrill of Boise drove over last Sunday, bring' ins her uncle, Maynard Hamil ton, home after he had visited relatives there for a few days Ray Davis, Jr., of Portland, spent the week-end here visit ine his parents and hunting. Bob Wooden was here October 13 from Portland to visit his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs, Del Sandlin. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Smith and son Bob of Portland, were visiting at the Ray Davis home ror a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cox and daughter of Portland spent the week-end hunting and visiting their folks, the D. Farrins and the Carl Coxes. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Erhardt and children of Portland spent last week hunting and vis iting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davis and Patty. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Johnson drove to Prinevllle Friday even ing for the week-end with their daughters, Mrs. Francis Noland and family, and Mrs. Judy Mar tin and family Mr. Al Middleton and son Richard of Coos Bay, and Vir ginia Brooks of North Bend came in Friday night to help move L. J. Matteson and his family to North Bend where they are both employed.
