The Huskies, looking for their first league win this season, will be fired up to win one this week-end. But hold it they did, and they emerged with their second league victory in as many starts with the 12-6 score stand ing up to the final gun. The Tigers roared deep three times in the fourth quarter, Wing to thp lorn- t- and to the 23 on the occasions. "We played sloppily between the 20's, but we stiffened from there on," said Coach Gordon Meyers after the contest. In the matter of ball control, the second half was a reversal of the first two periods. lone had 39 offensive plays in the first half to Weston's 19. but in the second half, Weston made 39 plays and lone only 11. Their luck ran out Friday, October 6, when they could do nothing right against the Heppner Mustangs on the rodeo grounds here and lost, 51-0. It bettered by 10 points the 41-0 shellacking that the Horsemen administered to Wahtonka here last year. But there was no indication that Coach Ed Hiemstra and his charges intended to "pour it on." The coach used every man on his thin bench in the game. This was a night when they could do nothing wrong and the Rockets couldn't muster a point by any maneuver they attempt ed. Heppner was on the score board in Just two plays after the kickoff. It came on a 53 yard pass play with Dave Hall pitching to Bill McLeod. The speedy end took the perfectly tossed "bomb" over his should er and with a burst of speed outdistanced his lone pursuer to ramble into the end zone. Bruce Marquardt kicked the point. Heppner 7, Pilot Rock 0. It wasn't long until Heppner had the 'ball again and Randy Stillman, who was to have a big night, ran it in from the four. The kick try failed. Hepp ner 13, Pilot Rock 0. In the early part of the sec ond, John McCabe had his turn. He broke free and ran 30 yards to score. The kick again was blocked. Heppner 19, Pilot Rock 0. Dave Hall completed the first half scoring for Heppner on a 10-yard run, and the kick try again was no good. This made the score 25-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, Stillman broke away around end, hit op en country and headed for the end zone, taking off from his own 35. A Rocket defender stuck with him for a while, but Still man. like McLeod. had the legs to pull away and galloped the distance for six more points. Perhaps the early Heppner strikes tended to demoralize the visitors for they never could get a sustained drive going and never seriously threatened to score. But they stuck in the game and kept trying until the bitter end. This was a non-league game for both teams, since the Rock ets play in the eastern division of the Greater Oregon circuit.
