Harvest Season Nearing Close Morrow county' grain har vest 1 nearer Its finish with an estimated 85 completion, according to Gene Winters, county extension agent, and Harlan McCurdy, Jr., manager of Morrow County Grain Grow er, Inc. MeCurdy suld early this wk that nil elevator of MC'GG were si ill receiving grain except for the one at McNabb. It I exixKted, however, that the elevator In the north and central part of the county will be virtually through by the end of tho week but harvest con tinuing only In higher eleva tion, particularly the southern part of the county. Klevator are not "bunttlng at the Kearns" a had been pre dicted In the spring. The onset of hot, dry weather hi principal ly blamed for shriveling and the light production. Some rancher reported fair ly good yield, hut many were far below expectations. It 1 still too early to determine a county average, but MeCurdy hazarded a guess that It might run about 21 bushels per acre on wheat. About the only generally happy thought for the harvest er Is that the cutting has not been Interrupted by rain this year. They would have been happy to have a rain as late as June but were glud that It didn't come late to humper the harvest. Sudden Illness Claims Florence; Rites in Eugene Memorial nervlce were held In Kugene on Saturday, August 5, for Kugene Lewi Florence, 51, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman (J. Florence, and brother of Mrs. Dean (Mary Eleanor) Oilman, all of Ileppner. Florence died Wednesday. August 2, of a heart attack while on a fishing trip with hi wife and friends on a boat out of Winchester Bay. He had previously suffered a serious attack In 1SHJ5. For several years he had mane ni home in r.u gene at 570 Antelope Way, and had been associated with the really firm, Oregon Settlement Association. Before then he had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad at Kugene. He had vis ited here often with his par ents, especially during the hunt ing seasons. Born July 30. 1916, In Jleppner, he spent his boyhood here and attended the local schools. He was graduated from the Eugene High school. On February 25, 193'J, he was married to Marjory Klnny of Eugene. They have one aon, Gary A., an ac countant In Eugene. He was a member of the First Christian church; Eugene Elks Lodge No. 357; Eugene Moose Lodge No. 086, and of the Eu L'cne Realty Board. Funeral services were held Balm Fork Fire Hits Wheal Range Fire broke out Saturday after noon In wheat land on a farm being operated by Merrltt Gray on Balm Fork, southeast of Hepp- rur, and burned a large area of wheat and range land before It was brought under control. It was difficult to determine the acreage covered, but it was est imated roughly at some 400 acres, of which 150 to 200 acres were In wheat. Ileppner Firemen with rural trucks went to the scene to battle the fire during the afternoon, and a helicopter came from Fossil to assist. It checked the fire by flowing back the flames and helping extinguish them. Many neighbors and others came to help. Origin of the fire Is Indefinite but It Is thought to have started from a combine.
