HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES. Kinzua Golfers Entertain Club From McNary By VIRGINIA KELSO KINZUA On Sunday. June 4. the Kinzua golfers entertained the swingers of the McNary Golf Club of Umatilla at the local club. Throughout the day and into the late afternoon the course was crowded with devot ees of the ancient sport who did their utmost to conquer the greens and fairways. The day was begun with a breakfast served by the men and a fine mid-dav buffet was set out by the ladies of the club. Prizes were awarded to winners in dif ferent catagories as follows: MeNarv men: Low gross, Cart- wrieht: low net, Shelton; long drive. Cartwright; closest to the pin. Welch. MeXaxy ladies: Low gross. Opal Morr, low net, Janet Welch; long anve, fTan roneu; closest to the pin, Opal Morr. Kinzua Men: Low gross, Don Slinkard; low net, a three-way tie between Wayland Hyatt, Jim Hulett. Gary Couture; long drive, Lee Bailey; closest to the pin, Jim Hulett. Kinzua ladies: Low gross and closest to the pin. Lavina Conner; low net arid long drive. Dorothy Close. To top the day 22 men participated in a sole survivor contest in which Sed Nickelson and Lee Bailey turned back the challenge of Jiggs Bowman and Milt Boring or the tenth hole to be the win ner. Thirty-three men of the Kin zua Golf club enjoyed the sec- end stag night of the season at the local Eolf club on Friday evening. Nine holes of medal coif were turned in by the golf ers with Don Slinkard and Don McConneli winning low gross and low net. Other winners were: Long Drive, Bob Misener: Closest to the Pin, Lee Bailey; Least Putts. Jim Hulett; Most Putts, Jack Gall. Jim Walker served up fried chicken in sumptious quantities which was savored by all pres ent. In a short business meeting, Don Chase was elected presi dent; Bob Reavis, vffce-president, and Gary Couture, secretary treasurer for the coming year. Mrs. Forrest Logan and child ren of Salem spent from Thurs day until Sunuay visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Woods. When she went home, Terri and Vicki remained with their grandparents to attend the Daily Vacation Bible School. Mr. and Mrs. John Meadows end family left early Friday by plane to visit relatives in Iowa, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Belin da will remain in Des Moines, Iowa for the summer. Mrs. Harley Shook left last week for Manchester, Ky., where she was called by the death of her father. Louis Lorengel and his father William Lorengel were business visitors to The Dalles Saturday. Ernie Wall and Omar Stubble field flew to Brookings Saturday to bring home Mrs. John Nelson who had been ill there. Mr. Stubblefield and John returned home by car. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Zemmer and family of Bates visited over the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Barzee and other rela tives. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Oyler were business visitors to Prineville Friday evening, returning home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Keller and family were business visitors to Portland over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Clay Phillips of Heppnej were here Saturday ev ening to attend the dinner at the Kinzua Church Annex honoring the Guinn and Schroeder famil ies They were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Schroeder. Mr. and Mrs. Slim Khoton spent Saturday of last week fishing at Prineville. While there thev visited Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Maley of Newport. The Malcys were former Kinzua residents Mr and Mrs. Frank Ferrel were business visitors to Prine ville Friday. Mrs. Tom Jordan and child ren and Karen Mortimore were in Heppner Thursday for busi ness, shopping, and medical care for the Jordan youngsters. Herschel M unlock and Earl Norris were in Dallesport,, Wn., Saturdav to pick up the Norris plane. After they returned home Mr. and Mrs. Murdock and Air. and Mrs. Norris flew to Pendle ton for shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Sharp and Mrs. Richard Frank of Hep pner went to Crescent City, Calif. Tuesday, where they vis ited with Richard Frank, iney all went on to Eureka to do some fishing. A new family has moved in to Camp 5 Mr. and Mrs. Mich ael Todd and son Gary of Grass Valley. He will work on the skidding crew. Mrs. Todd is the former Terry White of Fos sil. The dinner at the Kinzua An nex Saturday evening which honored the Alan Guinn and Harlan Schoeder families was well attended. The two families will be moving to Omak, Wn.. where thev 'ill make their homes. Several musical selec tions were sung by the child ren's choir and the adult choir after which framed pictures were presented to each family by the Kinzua church. Rockhound Corner Mrs. E. E. Gonty, vice-president of Morrow County Gem and Mineral Society, presided at the May meeting, held Saturday evening, May 27. President Avery Taylor was unable to attend. Mr. and Mrs. George Miller told of various trips they had been on. one recently to Fountain Ear, where Mrs. Miller found some arrow heads. Mrs. Miller, co-chairman of the Rock Hound booth at the Sidewalk Bazaar, said she is gathering materials and urged members to cooperate by making things or cutting slabs. Many people interested in rocks have been pleased in the past with what the club has had to offer. Mr. and Mrs. Pete McMurtry were named to serve on the fair booth committee. They would appreciate materials to be used for display. June 24 is the date of the last meeting for the summer. A pot luck supper will be held at 6:30 p.m., and a work sess ion on Sidewalk Bazaar ma terials will folow. On June 25 a field trip with sack lunch is planned for the Opal Butte area. All members are invited to attend both of these functions and will be notified of the meet ing place and time for each field trip. Mrs. Alice McCabe was hostess for the evening. She will now go to Portland June 11 and 12 to take her Oregon State Board of Cosmetology therapy exams. She also will take the Califor nia boards later in the summer 1 rrxviv her license there. Mrs. Dale Shingledeckor and bovs were Memorial Day visit ors with her parents, Mr. and Mrs William Gravbeul. John Wilson of Seattle, Wash.. was a week-end visitor of his narents. Mavor and Mrs. Chest er Wilson and family. John's wife, Susan, went on to Idaho to visit her parents and picneo. John up Sunday and they re turned home. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Isom were week-end campers at Hilgard park near La Grande. Mrs. Marguerite Houghton traveled to Portland Friday to attend the graduation of her grandson, Eric Houghton. Her son Don Houghton brought her home on Saturday and stayed until Sunday. Albert Partlow is home fol lowing knee surgery at the Community hospital in Pendle ton. Mr. Partlow injured his knee in an accident at his home List Monriav evenine. He was discharged from the hospital Friday. Paul Hovinghoff, son of Mrs. Carrie Le Blanc, won the hamp er that was sponsored by the Irrigon Extension unit. It was raffled off at the school picnic Sunday. Donna Kay Pummel broke her wrist in an accident in which she fell off a horse in Boardman last Monday evening. Mrs. Ba ker rushed her to the Hermiston hospital and her arm was set She returned home that even ing. Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jiggs Lathrop last Wednesday night were his mo ther. Mrs. Hazel Lathrop and his sister, Mrs. Sally Russell and two children of Lostine. Week-end visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Orvllle Buchanan and fam ily were Hideo Koike and Shoi chi Ikeya. They are working for Mr. Hansell at Ordnance. Week-end visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Warner were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Pantelis Vrontakis and Jeff of Salem. Walt Agee left Friday morn ing for the Walla Walla Veter ans hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Berg and Ronald of Vancouver, Wn., were week-end visitors of Mrs. Berg's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Al Partlow and Sher- yi. Mrs. Mary Adams is home fol lowing eye surgery at the Com munity hospital in Pendleton. She was released Saturday and is staying with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Don Adams. Betty Eppenbach broke her fineer Friday participating in a soft ball game at Riverside High school at Boardman. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Warner had as visitors last Thursday through Saturday his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fowler of Kent, Wn. Mrs. Margaret Finney of Mil-ton-Freewater spent Sunday in Irrigon visiting friends. A Auto Overturns; Driver Uninjured Pat Hammond of lone, driver and lone occupant of a car that over turned early Sunday morn ing near the Alpine junction on the highway to Buttercreek, ap parently escaped unhurt from the accident. A state nolle officer who went to Investigate said that Hammond had left the scene when he arrived about 2 a.m. The auto apparently went out of control as Hammond was driving south and rolled over in a plowed field.
