Viks Bounce Mustangs To Earn State Berth lCrnt!n-:id fr m p !: came back again with a drive through the key that brought it to 10-6. Doherty blazed a long one through the hoop, and Findlev retaliated for Vale with a lavin after a drive to make it 12-8. Jacobs, the glorious surprise of the tournament for Heppner, canned a lavin on a feed from Hall to make it 14-8 with 1:44 showing on the clock for the first quarter. But that pestifer ous Johnson canned two free throws on a personal by Jac obs to make it 14-10 before Kil kenny pushed a shot from the side. The irrepressible Johnson kept the Vikings within four on another pusher to make it 16. 12. Mac Hoskins got his first point on a free throw with 36 seconds remaining and the first quarter ended, 17-12. Johnson Carries Vale Out of Vale's 12 points in the first period. Johnson bagged all but two. Had it not been for him carrying the load for Vale, the Mustangs might have pick ed up enough momentum to de moralize the Malheur county five. Heppner then might have done the same to the Viks as Vale did to the Huskies Friday night. Things started going awry for Heppner in the second per iod. Jacobs, who climaxed a sol id basketball career for the Mustangs with near brilliant play in this tournament, drilled a long two hand overhead shot that moved the lead to seven points, 19-12. But this was the height of the Mustangs glory in this championship game. Cammann hit from the base line, Findley scored on one of two free throws and came back with a jumper from the floor. Johnson drove in for a layup and suddenly the score was deadlocked at 19-19. Hoskins brought the lead back with a free throw but Johnson shoved Vale in front for the first time with 4:54 to play in the second quarter on two free throws. Hall dribbled the length of the floor and went in for a lay up. That gave the margin back to Heppner, 22-21, but the in evitable Johnson was back with a long push, 22-23. Heppner rallied briefly. Jac obs tucked in a-tipin and fol lowed with a one-hand push to give the Mustangs a 3-point edge, 26-23. But Cammann hit, followed by another by John'on and the Vikings were in front, 26-27. Never Retain Lead The death knell for a Mus tang Coos Bay trip was sound ed at this moment 2:10 left to play in the second quarter for Heppner was never able to re gain the lead, no matter how thev tried. The western division co champs who had moved so smoothly in the first period, were afflicted in the middle of the second with costly person als and started making telling turnovers. With Cammann coming on strong, the Vikings expanded their one-point edge to five at halftime, and the 33-28 bulge they held was as wide as the distance between Heppner and f'nos Bay. Heppner's followers, perhaps 500 strong, hoped that the Mus tangs could engineer a third quarter comeback. They had of ten seen this team shatter the opposition at the slightest op ening in other games during the season. But the rally didn't ma- 'erialize. Johnson lost no time fatten ing the margin, getting two buckets in the first minute of the third quarter. Hall hit with a pusher, making it 30-37, and then came a dry spell for the Mustangs. Johnson blasted two more, Findley banked in a crip p'e when he found himself all alone in the key, and then picked up a free throw. Sun denly Vale was virtually out of range at 44-40. Big Dennis Do man made it a 15-point mar gin with a free throw, widest of the game. Mustangs Miss Through this barrage, Hepp ner muffed its chances. Jacobs, Hoskins. Hall and Doherty all stepped to the free throw line in the first three minutes of the quarter, but not one of their shots went through the hoop. This was only a momentary lapse but it sealed the doom of the Mustangs. Hall came back to count two free throws, and tallied from the floor to make it 45-34. Findley made two for Vale on a tip, but Hos kins hit to move Heppner to 36 to 47. Big Mac holed one of two free throws, and a few sec onds later Kilkenny bagged one to end the quarter at 39-47. In the final stanza, each team scored 13. The Viks went ahead as much as 13 when Findley hit a layin with 4:30 remain ing. In the final minutes, the Mustangs showed some of their first quarter spark and got the margin down to five points on some beautiful play. Doherty hit a push shot, Hoskins drove the floor length for a layin af ter a steal. Kilkenny grabbed the ball on a Vale inbounds play, fired it through, and the count was 54-49. With only 59 'econds remaining and the Mus angs working for a miracle, Doherty was called on his fifth personal, casting more gloom on the Heppner hopes. Jacobs was already out on fouls, leaving early in the quarter. Heppner reserves came in to fill the gau and they held their own despite a rash of whistle tooting against them. The score sheet shows four in a row against the Mustangs in 32 seconds Doherty, Kilkenny, Hoskins and Hall. Vale made four points on these. Hall came back with a gift toss for Hepp ner and Randy Stillman made a neat drive and canned a push er with 13 seconds to play, bringing the Mustangs to with in six, 52-58. But Ron Page sank two free throws on Bill Mc Leod's personal to end the scor ing at 60-52. From the second quarter Hepp ner was in foul trouble. At the end of the game, two of the starters were out on fouls Doherty and Jacobs; two had four Kilkenny and Hoskins; and Hall had three. Vale fared a little better with Doman out in the fourth quar ter on five, and Johnson, Find ley and Page all on the brink of disaster with four. The Vikings did better from the free throw line than Hepp ner with 16 of 28 to the Mus tangs' 12 of 27. The winners hit 22 shots from the floor to 20 for Heppner. Johnson's 28 points more than doubled the pointmaklng of any other player on the floor. Cam mann had 13 and Findley 12. Hoskins, who did not have a good night partly due to a bad ankle, emerged as high man for Heppner with 12. Hall made 11 and Jacobs scored 10. Doherty well checked, was held to eight. Heppner, Sherman Both Top Grant at La Grande Sherman County, which hit a Vale cyclone in the first round of the district basketball tour nament at La Grande Friday night to lose, 56 to 40, came back strong Saturday night to take third place In the tour nament by slapping Grant Un ion, 62 to 46. Heppner's Must a n g s had knocked the Prospectors out of title contention Friday night in a game with almost an identi cal score to that of the Sherman-Grant game, 61 to 46. HEPPNER 61. GRANT 46 The Prospectors hoped for a gold strike against the Mus tangs in the Friday night game and fought like Tigers to stake their claim. A 26-point scoring binge in the final quarter brought the final margin of 16 for Heppner, but just 7V4 min utes earlier, the contest could still have gone either way with the Mustangs holding only a four point spread at 35-31. It was 5-10 Paul Dieker that plagued the Mustangs as he canned eight field goals, six coming in the second half. But Jim Doherty, one of Heppner High's all-time basketball im mortals, had 19 for the Mus tangs. Dave Hall, coming on strong as a Junior, hit 16, and Jim Jacobs, who probably was the hero of the tournament for the Mustangs, connected on 12. Most of Jacobs' shots were spectacular ones that proved to the crowd that he can score af ter finding trouble most of the season with hitting the basket. Ailing Mac Hoskins, the big guy for Heppner, had a light night with nine. Chris Labhart, most fearsome of the Prospector five, was held to nine. Grant opened the game with spirit and took a 5-point lead early in the game. By the end of the first quarter, Hall and Hoskins had started to find the range and Heppner went into the second quarter three points behind at 13-10. In the second quarter, Jac obs gave a sparkling perform ance with Doherty also break ing through with his playmak ing and fine floor play. With these two sparking the offense, the Mustangs took over and went off at halftime leading 24-19. At the start of the fourth, it was 35 to 29 for Hepp ner. Dieker kicked off the fourth with a jumper, and the margin dropped to 35-31. Hall came on like one-man gang in the remainder of the game. He made three field goals and six free throws for 12 points. Doherty scored eight and Jacobs and Kilkenny each had three, as the Mustangs wrote finish to Grant's hopes for a state tourney berth. Field goals were close 23 for Heppner and 20 for Grant but Heppner had 15 free throws to six for the Prospectors. VALE 56, SHERMAN 40 With Pat Cammann twirling It, Vale had Sherman County caught in a revolving door In the tournament's opening game and won, 56 to 40. The 5 6 guard bombarded the basket with un erring long shots while Randv Findley added the second half of the one-two punch, and the Huskies sailed to an 18-2 lead. The western division on champs, a pre-tourney ravorite, were on the verge of a rout be fore they gained their poise. The first quarter margin was 2.1 to 9 for Vale. The 14 points were too much for Conch Pasco Arritola's boys to pick up in the remaining three quarters. With David Riehelderfer and Gene Lanthorn leading the way, they managed to hold the Vikings even for the rest of the game, but the first quarter margin held up. Score at halftime was 31 to 19 for the winners. At the end of three It was 46 to 34. Cammann finished with 18 In the game, most of them com ing in the first quarter, while Findley had 17. Riehelderfer topped Sherman with 13 while Lanthorn had 10. SHERMAN 62, GRANT 46 Bouncing back from their In itial defeat, the Sherman Hus kies took vengeance on Grant Union Saturday night, 62 to 46. They did it In much the same manner as Vale had treated them.
