However, the McEwen win drops the Cards into a second place with Umatilla at 6-1 But a fate of scheduling gives the Cardinals a big opportunity on the coming week-end. They start the second half of league play and go to Pilot Rock Fri day night for a real big one. The Rockets won in their first meeting, but Coach Dockter thinks his boys now have the horses to upset the league lead ers. On Saturday night, the lone team has a golden opportunity to avenge its loss to the Scot ties of Athena. McEwen comes ta lone for a return game. Should the Cards be able to come up with twin wins, they will get a jump on the field down the home stretch in the B circuit Victory over Umapine Friday night came rather easily for the Cards. They held an 11-point bulge at the first quarter stop and picked up momentum until the fourti quarter when they coasted home. The lone five shot .420 from the floor while Uma pine hit at a .335 clip. A zone defense held Rain water, usually good for 25 to 30 points per contest, to 11 in this one. Frank Halvorsen led in re bounding with 14, and as a team, lone topped Umapine on rebounds, 47 to 35. Against McEwen, the Cards went cold with four minutes lo go in the game. They made on ly one of nine shots good in the final quarter. Halvorsen went out on personals with four min utes left in the game, and this lost a lot of the board strength tor the Cards. While McEwen hit nine of 10 free throws in the final quarter, lone missed five tree throws and three layins with less than two minutes to play lone shot in front in the first quarter, 18 to 11, but Athena moved into a 28-28 tie at half time. The Cards surged ahead in the third for a 44-37 margin going into the final period. In the fourth quarter the Cards made onlv five points while the Scotties tallied 17. Madras was Just too much in the first quarter as they ran away from the Baby Mustang, 22 9. At halftlme Madras had u comfortable lead of 40-20 and won the game handily. After splitting a pair of games Inst weekend, the Heppner Mustangs take to the road this week for a one-game encounter with Wahtonka of The Dalles Friday night. Last week's 5S 51 Kss to Sherman County and th3 6ci-49 win over Madras tied the Blue and Gold for first with Sherman in Greater Oregon League standings. Both current ly sport a record of four wins and one loss. The always pesky Eagles of Wahtonka are now tied for fifth with Burns, both boasting two victories against three defeats. Tl ey also split two games last week nipping Madras in a heart-thumper, 61-60, then being clobbered by Sherman. 71-42. At first glance Wahtonka would apjear to be ne of the circuit's weaker clubs this. How ever, a closer examination of its 5 4 overall record reveals fairly close losses to Enterprise I.t6-47) and Burns (59-541. But most important, the Eagles edgi-d tough Grant Union, 50-43, tw.-j weeks ago Gary Ricketts and Mike Hei st ih provide the bulk of Wah tonka's soring punch. Ricketts, a thorn in the Mustang side last year, gunned In 22 points cgainst Madras and added 19 in the Sherman fray. Helseth's top effort f tie year has been 19 counters. Heppner figures to be "out or blood" this week after the heart I reaking loss to Sherman and subsequent letdown in the Mad ras contest. The picliminary junior varsity game will begin at the usual time (6:30), followed by the var sity fray at 8:15. Mustangs Power Way to Victory Oyer Madras Five Winless Madras, consigned to the cellar of the western divis ion of the Greater Oregon League, put up quite a battle before Heppner High's Mustangs subdued the White Buffaloes on the basketball court here Satur day night. But the Mustangs' power brought victory over the taller Madras team, to to 49. j After a close first quarter, the j Mustangs moved to a 3417 lead by halftime and appeared to be on the verge of running away with the contest. But the visit ors came out firing in the third quarter and melted the lead, coming within four points of catching up. Some good shoot ing by the Mustangs, coupled with ball hawking tactics, brought them back to a 10-point margin by the start of the fourth quarter. From that point, Heppner had the game under control. Every man on the Mus tang roster got into the game, and most of them contributed to the final margin of 16 points. Hot shooting Don Boyle of the Buffaloes topped scoring for the evening with 17 points. Jim Do herty led Heppner with 15 on six field goals and three free throws.
