January 12. 1967 Travels Enjoyed Oyer Holidays By MARTHA MATTESON MONUMENT Mr. and Mrs. Ed Clark spent their Christmas vacation days at Idaho Falls, Idaho with her folks. Jim Carey spent his holiday vacation at Salem. Dave Thorn diwe to Portland to enjoy the Christmas vacation da vs. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ward spent their time here and at John Day. He is the basketball coach and had to be with the team during the tournament. The Bob Kilbey family spent Christmas at Ritter with his folks, the Elmer Kilbeys. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hudson and three children were in La Grande, enjoying Chris t m a s with her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Lilv. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Williams traveled from Pasco, Wn., to spend the week-end with his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wil liams. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Williams enjoved Christmas week at San Jose, Calif., with their son, Charlie Williams and family, and with their daughter, Mrs. Ross (Barbara) McDonald and family. Tacie Sweek spent her vaca tion from school in La Grande here with her folks, the Jack Mr. and Mrs. Jim Croker spent Christmas week-end in Vancou ver, Wn., with his mother and sister. Their son, Ronny, came in from Seattle for the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Porter enjoyed their holidays from col lege at La Grande at the homes of their folks, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shanks and Mr. and Mrs. George Stubblefield. Maynard Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Dick drove to Spray on Christmas and New Years for special church serv ices. Bill Chance spent Christmas at the Milt Morgan home. Mrs. Lottie Foss and her bro ther, Chester Round, from Boise, Idaho, have been visiting with relatives in this area. The county is starting to do construction work on trie Deer Creek road near the Kern's Ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Condley of Bend attended the 50th anni versary of Mr. and Mrs. Murd Stubblefield on Friday after noon, December 30. They spent the night with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Scott, then visited at the Ed Round and Boyd Hinton homes and with other friends before going on to Long Creek to visit their grandson, Chucky Woods in Long Creek. Miss Ruth Ann Capon was home from Oregon State Univer sity, visiting her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gertson of Ukiah at the Capon ranch of her broth er, Don Capon. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin and grandson Gary Martin of Prineville enjoyed the New Years with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Reynolds. Clayton Sweek of Heppner came Saturday before Christ mas, taking Paul and Don Mc carty to Heppner to spend the holidavs with their mother, Mrs. Stella McCarty. New Year's guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Croker were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Williams and Ron nie Croker. Mr. and Mrs. Mel Round and sons Donald and Ronald of Idanha spent the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Round and also visited her aunt and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ford Sloan of Long Creek. Miss Mary Emery, who is in nurse's training at Walla Wal la, Wn., spent Christmas with her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Elsy Emery. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cupper of La Grande were among those here for the 50th anniversary of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murd Stubblefield. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Matteson of Long Creek spent Nev Year's eve at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Scott. The Matteson fam ily had spent most of the week with his other sister, Mrs. R. K. Kingman, at Sacramento, Calif. Boardman News Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kress were Kress' uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George Zimmerman and daughter Theresa of Okotoks, Alta., Canada, and his mother, Mrs. Emma Kress of Lewiston, Idaho. Other guests were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Ball and daughters Barbara and Karen of Hermiston. Mrs. George Neeley was ta ken to the Good Shepherd hos pital in Hermiston, January 1. Carol Anne is now eligible for possible state and national scholarship awards. Her test al so earned her a specally design ed silver charm from General Mills, sponsor of the Betty Crocker search for the Ameri can Homemaker of Tomorrow. A state Homemaker of Tomor row and runner-up will be sel ected from the winners of all schools in the state, with the former receiving a $1,500 col lege scholarship; her school will be given a complete set of En cyclopedia Britannica by Ency clopedia Brittanica, Inc. The runner-up will be awarded a $500 educational grant The Homemaker from this state, together with those from all other states and the Dis trict of Columbia, each accom panied by her school advisor, will join in an expense paid ed ucational tour of Colonial Wil liamsburg, Va., and Washing ton, D. C, next spring. Emmett McKenzie was admin istered the oath of office to serve as city councilman for three years at the meeting of the council last week. Seth Rus sell is the retiring councilman, and was presented with a plaque commemorating him for 20 years of service. At a meeting of the Urban Renewal Agency sale was ap proved for city lots to Cecil Hicks, Clyde Robinson and Rol lo Moore. Recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Zearl Gillespie were Allen Love and Mrs. Mon tigal, Logan, Utah. Love, who is a nephew of the Gillespies, had been to Juneau, Alaska, to spend Christmas with his family-Mrs. James Driseoll of Hepp ner visited two days last week at the home of her mother, Mrs. A. R. Fortner. Mrs. Leo Root has been In the Good Shepherd hospital in Hermiston since Wednesday of last week, suffering with a se vere case of bronchitis. Mrs. Adolf Skoubo was a pa tient in the Good Shepherd hospital in Hermiston last week. She returned home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Braneo of Areata, Calif., were week-end visitors at the home of Mrs. Branco's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gantenbein. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ekleberry and daughters Debbie, Linda and Theresa of Hermiston were Sunday visitors at the home of Ekleberry's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely. Cafeteria menus for Riverside High school and Boardman Grade school for the week of January 16-20 are as follows: Monday chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, carrots and cake; Tuesday pizza, pineap ple and cottage cheese salad, vegetable sticks and pudding; Wednesday beans with ham, tossed salad, muffins and fruit; Thursday fried chicken, pota toes, rolls and fresh fruit; Fri day creamed tuna with bis cuits, corn, vegetable sticks and cherry crunch. Offices to Offer Federal Tax Aid Filing period for 1966 Federal income tax returns will extend from January 3 through April 17, 1967, A. G. Erickson, district director of the Internal Revenue for Oregon, announces. Eleven offices in the state will be open from 8 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. each Monday through April 17. Included are those at Pendleton (611 S. E. Emigrant) and The Dalles (Williams Build ing, 304 East Fourth Street). An office at the Federal Build ing in La Grande will be open for assistance on two dates, February 9 and April 6, from 8 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. The Portland office, 319 S. W. Mr. and Mrs. Marlowe Sand ers of Portland were holiday visitors at the home of his mother, Mrs. Eunice Sanders, and with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sanders. Mr. and Mrs. William Gray beal spent the holidays at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Shingledecker and family. While there they also visited Mr. and Mrs. Erv n Chapman, Mrs. Do shia Brownell and Mr. and Mrs. Max Graybeal. Bishop Wisdom of Portland was a Saturday afternoon visit or at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Graybeal. Mrs. Perry Pummel and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Obern Stan derfer of Hermiston, were Port land visitors at the home of Mrs. Standerfer's mother, Mrs. Beulah Pummel, leaving Sun day morning and returning Monday afternoon. Mrs. John Kenney and David Kenney went to Portland to take Miss Mary Kenney, wno returned to Tracy, Calif., af ter spending the holidays with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Max Jones, Bruce Jones, Penney Jones and Anita Pummel and John Seeley of Corvailis, spent the holidays at Seattle, Wash., visiting Mrs. Jone's uncle, Harold Magner and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. William Allen and family of Salem, were vis itors with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Graybeal. They arrived Friday and left on Mon day. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Spencer, and son, Joe and daughter, Joyce, of Des Moines, Wn., were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Coy. Funeral services were held December 31, at Hermiston for Chauncey Grim, long time res ident of Irrigon. He died at the Umatilla hospital. Burial was at Desert Lawn Memorial Cem etery, Irrigon. Among those out of town at tending the Grim funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Allen, Walla Walla, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Allen, Salem; Mr. and Mrs. Junior Grim, Spokane, Wn.; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Rider, of Eugene; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Caldwell, The Dalles. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ander son of Hayden Lake, Idaho, are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 2 'a oz. boy, Anthony Ray, born December 24, at Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. Grandparents are Mrs. Margaret Smith of Umatilla and Mr. and Mrs. George An derson of Irrigon, Paternal great grandmothers are Mrs. Louise Puckett of Bend and Mrs. O. P. Olson of Pilot Rock. Maternal great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Al Taylor of Lewiston, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Roe of Pendleton spent New Year's week-end with Mrs. Roe's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brown ing. Linda Browning returned home after having spent the past week at the Roe home. Bernard Dyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dyer, returned i home Christmas from Germany ' having completed his tour of duty with the U. S. Army. He was with the military police while in the service. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lorengel and family went to Umatilla December 28 to attend the fun eral services of B. J. (Doc) Ben son. Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Benson, Jr. remained at Umatilla for a while. Bill Is on leave from Vietnam and Mrs. Benson and children from North Kingston, Rhode Island. Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Douglas and daughter Terry of Baker spent from Monday until Wed nesday visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Frank DeMeritt. VanWInkle spent Christmas eve at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Ledbetter and family. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Campbell for the Christmas hol idays were her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. I severance of Chelan, Wn. Plummer Chief Grain Division Allen G. (Al) Plummer, as sistant chief of the Oregon De partment of Agriculture's Grain Division for the past 12 years, has been promoted to chief of the division. The position is the one held by T. Ralph Harry until his death in earlv Novprnhnr Plummer, who came to the department as a chemist in the summer oi lyia, during his jcaia wuii me urain division has worked in all areas of the division. In addition to serving as a chemist he has also done samp ling, weighing, inspection and grain warehouse work. A graduate of Texas A and M, Plummer completed his col lege work after service in World War II and a few months fol lowing his graduation from col. lege came to Portland where he worked as a chemist analyzing grain for Kerr Gifford and Co., Inc. for six months before join ing the Grain Division staff. The assistant chief post held by Plummer until his promo tion will be filled through civil service examination.
