Changing light bulbs is just one of the many duties of "Bill" Lowe maintenance man at Pioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner. "Bill" has watched ths candlelight era flicker and die, and give way to the kerosene age which in turn has disappeared into the ELECTRIC AGE. Born in 1889 at Durham, England, he emigrated to the United States in 1913, only to leave a few years later to join the Royal Canadian Army as a Machine Gunner during WW I. After WWI, "Bill" returned to this area, and a few years later he took out American citizenship. Never a dull moment in this man's life, he has worked at the hospital for the past 16 years, but before that he earned his living doing everything from sheep herding, to light bulb changing. "Bill" spends every minute that he can outdoors hunting and fishing. During the winter he keeps him self busy with his hobby of woodworking. During the summer months he keeps his green thumb working in his garden and flower beds.
