2 HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES. Thursday. Dowmlx-r 15. 1966 fill . i 1966 Christmas Stamp Adapted From Portrait Christmas letters and cards in nxvnt years often bear two tvpes of Christmas stamps, the current United States Post Of fice stamp and that of the Tu berculosis and Health Associa tion. This year's Christmas stamp was adapted from a Hans Mom ling portrait on wood of "Ma donna and Child with Angels" which is part of the Mellon col lections in the National Gal lery of Art In Washington. The inscriptions are in red -gold and both artist and gallery are iden tified. The Christmas seal for 1906 is done in rich tones of red, green, gold, and black. It was designed by Heidi Brandt, who also designed the 1956 and 1961 Christmas seals. Mrs. Brandt has combined "flora from anywhere in Amer ica and a sweet bird of the imagination" to symbolize joy and hope in the fight against tuberculosis and other respira tory disease. the 1966 Christmas Seal Christmas Stamp posters bear the inscription, "Mail Early with Christmas Stamps Use Christmas Seals." The Christmas seal is shown in full-color; the Christmas stamp is in black and white. The Post Office Department has found the Christmas stamp profitable; although the cost of such stamps is more than twice as high as that of ordinary stamps a profit of almost one cent is realized on each stamp. Stamp collectors are usually eager for the specialties. The Christmas seal is the sole money-maker of the Tubercu losis and Health Association. Proceeds of the sheets of seals support research in tuberculo sis and allied lung ailments, and assist in case-finding through such means as the well-known mobile x-ray units. Health pamphlets to acquaint people with facts about lung ailments are posted in various places in the communities through another effort of local associations. In Morrow county the mobile x-ray unit makes two visits a year. Pamphlets are placed in several public places, such as libraries and laundromats, for the public to read. Subscrip tions to Today's Health are sent to doctors' offices. Another Morrow county use of the funds is a revolving loan fund for students studying for health careers.
