Schroth to Visit At Elks' Dinner Meeting Thursday Whltey Schroth of Hermlston, vice-president of the Oregon Elks Association, will make an official visitation to Heppner Lodge 358, BPOE, for Ladies Night on Thursday. December 8. He will apeak to members on the Oregon Elks Foundation. A dinner will be served at 6:30 for $1.50 per person, fea turing roast beef, mashed po tatoes, peas, ambrosia salad, rolls and gingerbread. Mrs. Dave McLeod I chairman of the committee for the dinner which Includes Mrs. Jim Healy, Mrs. Ernie McCabe, Mrs. Tous sent Dubuque and Mrs. Calvin Sherman. As is usual on ladles night, wives of members will play bridge and pinochle for prizes and will have refreshments dur ing the evening. Three of the Curds' starters were sophomores from last year's crack freshman quintet while Heppner fielded a start ing tcorn composed of three seniors and two Juniors. Using their fast break, . the Mustangs tallied two quick baskets at the start of the game and led alt the way. Coach Cene Dockter's boys had troub le finding the hoop and could only score three (leld goals In the first half. Program was devoted to see ing slides from the Northwest Mineral Society on fluorsecence in gems and minerals. Movies taken by Pete McMurtry of scenic Oregon were also enjoy ed. OH I 1 u Promise of another fine bas ketball season for Heppner High was given Saturday night at Pilot Rock when the Mus tangs galloped over Pilot Rock on the Rockets' floor, 66 to 44. Veterans of the Blue and Gold took right off where they fin ished last year with Jim Doher ty burning the net with 22 points on nine field goals and four free throws while lofty Mac Hoskins collected 20 on seven buckets and six free throws. Coming on strong from last year's Jayvees to back up the veterans were Randy Stillman lone High Wins Jamboree Trophy In Sportsmanship lone High school's cheering section and rally girls brought home the sportsmanship trophy from their basketball jamboree at Umatilla Friday night even though the Cardinals lost their abbreviated game, 44 to 28, against Echo. Coach Gene Dockter used all his players in the game to give them experience lor tne com ing season. Umatilla edged Stanfield, 33 to 30, and River side defeated a team of Herm iston High underclassmen, 29 to 15. The sportsmanship gold tro phy was based on five points: 1. Appearance of the cheering section. 2. School spirit. 3. Co operation with other cheering sections. 4. Originality of yells. 5. Control of the cheering sec tion. One hundred points was maximum score in each cate gory. All girls in' the lone stu dent body are members of their pep organization and thus all shared in the winning of the trophy. Cheer leaders for lone are Bonnie Akers. Bonnie Morgan. Theresa Stefan! and Jan Pal- mateer. who rang the bell with five field goals and Dave Hall who tallied six points on one field goal and four free throws. Jim Jacobs, another veteran from the district and sub-district champions of the past two years, had a rather rough debut, both physically and in the foul de partment. He suffered a cut ov er an eye In the rough play and In the second half, went out of action on five personals. Heppner shot In front quick ly in the game, leading 12-3 by the end of the first quarter. Shifting into high in the second period they zoomed to a 34-14 halftime lead. By the end of the third quarter it was 50 to 27 for the Mustangs, and they coasted home, 66 to 44, as Coach Bob Clough used 10 of ready for action because of his his 12-man squad.
