HEPPNER GAZETTE Women's Challenges Topic of Discussion By Methodist WSCS "Whore The Women Are" was the topic of the program pre sented bv Mrs. Orian WrtRht at the regular meetinc of the Wo men's Society of Christian Serv ice of the Methodist church Wednesday evening. June 1. in the church social rooms. Mrs. Wright pointed out that women constitute half the hu man race and should take ad vantaee of opportunities to serve in official positions in commun ity and church, using the Bible as the chart for meeting chal lenges of the changing world. "We are citizens not only of the small world in which we live, but also of the larger world be yond local boundaries,"' she pointed out. The challenge is to live and love as Christians in dailv life, and the wav we re spond to every situation in every relationship shows the depth of our commitment, the speaker noted. Mrs. Bob Henry presided dur ing the business meeting. A re port was heard from Mrs. Mattie Green on the National Assembly held recently in Portland. One question posed by a panel was "Who is the more important to educate, men or women?" Mrs. Henry and Mrs, Doug Drake reported on the standing committee training meeting held in Hermiston on May 25. Events coming up were an nounced as follows: Susanna Wesley Circle picnic, June 22; all-church picnic in July, and of ficer orientation meeting plan ned for August. Mrs. Elsie Leather and Mrs. Mattie Green served refresh ments. Appreciation Party Honors Teacher In appreciation to Mrs. Naomi C. Leishman, first grade teacher in the Heppner Elementary school for her devoted work with the beginning students the past year, mothers of her stud ents honored her with a "thank you" party in her room the last day of school, Friday afternoon. As a gift appreciation, the mothers presented her with a fitted traveling case. Refresh ments included an elaborately decorated cake, furnished by Mrs. Ron Haguewood. Mrs. Leishman has accepted a position with the Reedsport school system for the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. Omer McCaleb and daughters, Barbara and Beverly, and Mrs. Les (Mildred) Lundblad, all of Portland, spent the Memorial week-end with Mrs. Mattie Green, mother of Mrs. McCaleb and Mrs. Lund blad. Jus 1966 Melba Reid is Wed To Charles Mitchell In Kinrua Ceremony KINZVA tn a candlelit single ring ceremony Saturday night. June 4. at the Kinnia Community church. Miss Melba Marie Reid. daughter of Robert Reid and Mrs. Frank Hunsucker became the bride of Charles Ltnlev Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mr. Robert Wagner of Bend. The service- was performed by tho Rev. Fdwin Derrick. The bride, given in marriage bv her father, wore long white gown of taffeta wtih a lace bod ice fashioned with long sleeves. Her finger tip length veil was held bv a crown of hand made lace and pearls. She carried an arrangement of pink roses and centered with a white orchid. Matron of honor was her sis ter. Mrs. Lorraine Wilson, who wore white lace over pink and a corsage of carnations. The bridesmaids were Mrs. Kay Gor ham.cousin of the bride, and Miss Charlotte Hatter who wore white lace over pink. Candle lighters were Sara Bowman and Noroen Cecil with Maria Wilson as flower girl and Steven Hast ings as ring bearer. Serving as best man was Ray mond Reid with Frank Hunsuck er and Sam Samitore as grooms men. I'shers were O. L. Adams and Flovd Wilson. Mrs. Robert Kelso played the traditional wedding music and accompanied Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Freeman who sang. "Oh. Pro mise Me" and "Lord Bless This Hour". The bride's mother wore blue and white nylon over taffeta and the groom's mother wore a two piece pink suit. Both wore white carnation corsages. The four tiered cake was cut and served bv Mrs. Dorothy Prince after the gride and groom cut the traditional first slice. The gift table was in charge of Mrs. Raymond Reid. After a short wedding trip the young couple is at home in Kinzua where the groom is employed bv Kinzua Corporation. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. Dale Sinclair of Spray, Mrs. Shirley Peterson of Her Long, Calif., Mrs. Dequito Mc Graw of North Hollywood, Calif, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gorham of Wallowa. Sorority Installs Incoming Officers Beta Omega Sorority held its installation banquet recently at the Wagon Wheel Cafe banquet room in Heppner, with outgoing president, Betty Hausler. con ducting the ceremony. Incoming officers are Maxine Rietmann. president: Donna Pet erson, vice president; Betty Rietmann, corresponding secre tary; Pat Kincaid. recording sec retary: Adele Dockter. treasurer; Joyce Snider, chaplain and Jon quil Girl, and Betty Hausler. educational director. Betty Haus ler was installed bv the new president. . Mrs. Hausler presented offic ers that had served with her the past year special recognition pins, and officers for the coming year were presented corsages by incoming president, Maxine Rietmann. Those who received ten-year pins were Marilyn Rietmann, Donna Peterson, Joyce Snider, Maxine Lunnell and Alice Craw ford. A jewel pin ceremony was Biven in honor of Dianna Kin. ! caid and Donna Webb, with Mrs. Hausler tn charge. Serving on the social commit tee were Maxine Rietmann, Betty Hausler and Donna Peter son. Picnic Entertains Heppner 8th Graders Eighth graders of Heppner grade school were guests at a graduation picnic from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 1. The students were taken by school bus to Cutsforth Park where they were served a supper of wien ers, pop, potato chips, relishes ana cup canes. i Rain, which had threatened : all day, held off and the even- ing was sunny but cool, i Principal Jack Grossnickle and eighth grade teacher Tom Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Howard i Cleveland. Mr. and Mrs Drval Matheny, Mr. and Mrs. Riley Munkers and Mr. and Mrs. Rob ert Abrams helped serve the supper. Leonard Munkers was bus driver. Couple Visits Here Following U. S. Tour Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Billings of Seattle, Wn., spent the Memor ial Day holiday visiting at the home of Mrs. Billing's mother, Mrs. Ethel Zeimantz, and with Mrs, Mabel Chaffee. The Billings had just returned from a nine-months tour of the United States. While in Florida, they took a cruise to South America, the Bahamas and oth er islands. In October they will sail for London, Spain and Honolulu. Alfred Van Winkle of . Spo- kane, brother of Jack Van Win kle, visited briefly here Monday. He had been to Condon in con nection with business on con struction of a new grain eleva tor and stopped here to attend Chamber of Commerce meeting with his brother. He is vice pres ident of the Spokane Bank of Cooperatives. Mrs. Herman Winter attended the Republican State Central Committee in Medford last week. Jackson Coming For Sunday Services There will be Holy Commun ion servievs at All Saints' Episco pal church on Sunday, June 12, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Chandler Jackson of Hermiston will be here and a coffee hour in the parish hall will follow the communion serv ice. Mr. and Mrs. William B. Hughes and sons Scott and Rickey of Sweet Home are guests this week of his mother. Mrs. Olive Hughes, and of his brother and sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hughes and family. The mother will return home with them on Friday and will attend the 50th class reunion of her class at Oregon State Univer sity, to be held June 24-25. On Julv 1 Mrs. Hughes plans to be in Portland to visit her brother, G. Willard Bassett of Santa An na, Calif., who will be guest dir ector of music for the Imernat- ional Kiwanis Convention in Portland that week-end. Mr. Bassett Is a nationally known voice instructor, owning a pri vate voice studio in Santa An na. In August he will conduct for another convention in Hawaii.
