HEPPNER GAZETTE Band Entertains at PTA; New Officers Elected Bt LaVELLE PARTLOW IRRIGON Charles Moorman, band Instructor at A. C, Houph ton Elementary and Riverside Hieh school, presented a band concert following the Monday nicht rTA meeting at the A. C Houchton Cafetorium. The 5th grade band was first on the program, followed by the ith grade band. The concert concluded with several numbers bv the 7th and Sth grade band. During the evening, the fol lowing new PTA officers were installed: President. Mrs. Wan d a W it herspoon : v ice - president, Mrs. Mildred Baker; secretary, Mrs. Dolores Hinton; treasurer, Mrs. Shirley Ritter. They were installed by Mrs. Vera Cooley, a past president of PTA. The evening concluded with refreshments of cake, cookies, punch and coffee. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Holm drove to La Grande to visit their granddaughter and new great- pranrtn Mrs Johnnv Partlow and baby son. Michael Jay ( Saturday night. While in the area, the Ritzers visited a host of relatives. Mrs. Perrv Pummel accompa nied Mrs. Mary Lee Marlow of Boardman to the Dalles Mon day, where the ladies attended an Avon sales meeting. Stephens were their daughter, Mrs. Guy Parke and three daughters of Portland. Funeral service for Mrs. Fran ces Smith, who passed away at Good Shepherd hospital, was at Burns Mortuary in Hermiston Saturday. Mrs. Smith made her home in Irrigon with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Josie Buchan an. Out-of-town relatives and friends who came tor the fun eral and later visited with Mrs. Josie Buchanan and Mr. and Mrs. Orville Buchanan and fam ily were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Herring and son, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Mahan and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stockham. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rogers, Mrs. Leslie Rogers, Yakima, Washington. Rev. John H. Kenney conducted the fun eral, and music was by Mrs. Perrv Pummel and Mrs. Albert Partlow. Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of World War I met at the home of Mrs. Rees Morgan last Wednesday for a potluck din nei and workday. Members present were: Mrs. Edna Rick erts, Estelle Acton, Julia Pen ney, Pearl Cherry and Viva Lindley, Hermiston Mi n in 1 e Hoadley. Sylvia Morgan, Irrigon; Freda Bush and Dora Howe, Stanfield. The members ex pressed their appreciation to the following ladies who volunteer ed their services for the day: Mrs. Marguerite Houghton, Itol Rucker, Sedalia Dexter, Irrigon; Mrs. Hutchinson, Stanfield. The workday was spent making blocks for afghans which will be used in veterans' hospitals. Another workday has been set for May 18, Wednesday, at the old Irrigon school, when the la dies will tie the afghans. The "Busy-Bee-Keepers" 4-H club met at the home of their leaders. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wilson, Saturday and the mem bers opened their hives for the first time this spring. New mem bers completed their hives and aje new ready to catch a swarm of bees. The meeting concluded with refreshments served by Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Fred Murtishaw Is con valescing at Good Shepherd hos pital, after undergoing surgery last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Olin King re turned to Irrigon after a 2-week vacation at the beach. George Mull, student at North west Bible College, Seattle, was a Sunday morning guest of Dav id Kenney. The two boys play ed a trumpet and saxophone duet at the Irrigon A.ssembly of God church Sunday morning. Sherri and Sean Peck of Ruf us are visiting their grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. George An derson and family. Menus at A. C. On Sunday. April 24, the lo cal golfers went to Umatilla for a day of competition and a so cial get-together with the Mo Nary dub members. A large turnout of Kittzua players made the day a huge success with many compliments for the hos pitality of the host club. Way land Hvatt. Jlggs Bowman and Don Porsinger came home as winners for the local club. -The Friday night Stag for the Kinzua men on April lh. saw 27 dlvoteers tearing up the course, as the largest turnout of the young season made a wonder ful evening. Plav was followed bv fried chicken and all the trimmings served bv head chef Jim Walker. Winners for the evening were: Low gross. Don Stinkard; low net. Jim Hulett; long drive, Don Siinkard; closest to hte pin. Milo Prindlo; least putts, Jim Hulett. and hidden hole. Don McConnell. The first mixed event of the season was held Sunday with a husband-wife two ball affair, followed bv the first buffet pot luck dinner. A large turn out of plavers made the day a huge success to help speed the local season on its way. Honors were won bv Don and Vi Siinkard and iggs and Rita Bowman. Mrs. Richard Lynch and her brother Carl Scheibler of Port land left Tuesday to drive to Minneapolis, Kansas to visit their mother and other relatives. The Friendship club was en tertained at the school Wednes day night with Rita Conlee as hostess. High was won by Ro berta Keid, second high by Carol Norris and floating by Sue M.ittison and Betty Murdock. Others playing were Mavis Oy ler. Linda Rector. Barbara Mor timore, Rosie Graham. Sharon Kelso, Pat McMinn and Dinah Jackson. Business visitors to The Dal les last Thursday were Mrs. C. L. Flack and Mrs. Robert Kel so. They were accompanied by Vic Bowman who also went on business. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dyer went to Elgin Saturday where Mrs. Dyer wil visit with relatives for . several days. Mrs. Joe Browning went to Pendleton Friday to bimg home her daughter Joan for the week end. Miss Becky Schroeder was home over the week-end from college at Bend. She was ac companied by Miss Nancy Bush nell of Prineville. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Davis and familv of Lone Rock came to Kinzua last Thursday t0 vis It with Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hines and to help Mrs. Hines celebrate her birthday. In the afternoon Mrs. A. B. Coleman baked a birthday cake and had Mrs. Hines over for a surprise. Others asked to drop in during the afternoon were Mrs. Willis Wright and Mrs. Milt Boring. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Howell and Sandy, Mrs. John Hawk and children Florence. John and Jan ice were in Prineville last Mon day for business, shopping, and medical care for Mrs. Hawk. Mrs. Herschel Murdock and Mrs. Frank DeMerritt were bus ness visitors to Arlington and The Dales last Monday. Mrs. Ralph James and son David were in Heppner last Tuesday for medical attention for Mae and in Condon on bus iness. The regular Camp 5 womens card party was hied Tuesday evening at the Camp 5 Commu nity hall with Nancy Hawk as hostess. High was won by Eva DeMerrit, low by Joanie How ell, and floating by Betty Mur dock and Marie Hulett.
