Blalock Island Route Gels Favor Judge Owar Peterson Mid Wednesday that the Blalock Is land route for the Federal Inter state highway proposed from EUensburjr Is gaining favor. This route would cross the Columbia Elver at the island and bit high way Interstate 80.N near Board man. The judge, who recently flew over the proposed route, has been a strong advocate of the Blalock island routing as op posed to that going via the Uma tilla bridge or a third proposal to go via way of the Tri -Cities. The route he favors was nioAn f irct Ann cMoratlrtn when 0. 1 V l . o v . - - . several years ago. but recently, proponents of the Umatilla bridge route have been pressing hard for the river crossing at this existing bridge with the high way to hit 80N near Staniield. Letters from the Boeing com pany are encouraging to the Blalock route, the Judge said, A recent communication from them Indicated that the com pany Is interested In "reducing logistics problems that we have" in transportation from Seattle to the Boardman area. Another letter from the Bur eau of Public Roads said that the bureau was interested in any route that would reduce the mileage but was not interested in any that would extend it This would seem to eliminate the Tri-Cities proposal. Judge Peter son has contended that the Boardman route would be the shortest and most economical route. , , Both Oregon and Washington Highway commissions ere in volved in the matter. When a final dceision will be made is not known. File cards and guides, 3x5, 4x6 print the form you need for busi ness or ranch use. Phone 676-9228. Advertisement By , rvinntv TVmvrti Central Committee, Al Lamb, Sr.--yf;J ;'.:M ''J Chemical fallow with Atrazine controls cheatgrass in wheat The practice of chemical fallow with Atrazine offers wheat farmers the first reasonable approach to solving the cheat problem. A single spray of 7j lb. of Atrazine 80W per acre is applied in combination with a contact herbicide such as amitrole. The application should be made following adequate rainfall, after the cheat has emerged but before January 1st Weeds emerge and die Seasonal rains move Atrazine into the weed root zone. It is absorbed by roots of the germinating weeds. Soon after the weeds emerge, their leaves begin yellowing at the tips. Soon, the weeds die. The contact herbicide takes care of weeds which may have already emerged before your chemical fallow application is made. Long-lasting control This program of chemical fallow with Atrazine gives outstanding control of cheat and other annual weeds until late April or May. At that time, some tillage will probably be necessary, al though ranchers this past year report that only a minimum of tillage was re quired. At present, Atrazine is the only se lective, long-lasting herbicide which can be applied with reasonable safety. Be careful about overlap, however, since a double or triple dose of Atrazine could adversely affect next year's stand of wheat And, don't treat shallow or sandy soils. For more information on chemical fallow with Atrazine, contact your lo cal pesticide supplier or custom ap plicator, or write: Geigy Agricultural Chemicals, Division of Geigy Chemical Corporation, Saw Mill River Road, Ardsley, N.
